    It's nearly five years on, but this video review was indirectly gratifying for me. About 18 months ago I replaced my *ancient* Rebel XT / 350D (!) with a T8i / 850D. It's basically the 800D / T7i with 4k video, a rear dial and some other relatively minor niceties. I initially had my sights on the 80D at the time. But after reading reviews I ended up not being able to justify an extra ~$1,000 for the 80D given where I live (Louisiana, USA) and the limited landscape opportunities it offers. That money could be better spent elsewhere. Given all the naysayers decrying the death of the DSLR and rise of mirrorless, I wasn't sure I had spent my money wisely. But I think I have, and it's nice to hear basically the same thing from others more experienced and knowledgeable. I don't have L quality lenses (Sigma 17-70, Canon 70-300 IS USM) but with a little care I can get decent images.
    Thanks for the informative review.

      Thanks, i was a bit nervous about learning the camera settings, but when i saw the guided menu, i knew that was exactly the kind of training wheels i needed. Most importantly i don't feel lost when i'm switching modes to try something new. Also i'm going to Oregon to film the total solar eclipse on August 21st.
      Do you have any advice that might help ?

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  Před 7 lety +4

      +Matt Duden I'm jealous. Even when the eclipse is full the corona will still be very bright. You might get away with shooting without ND filters (practice by shooting the moon) but when it's not full I would use ND filters otherwise you'll struggle to expose anything and it's not ideal exposing your sensor to the sun like that either. I'd go with a six stop.
      Hope that makes sense. Just some thoughts off the top of my head.

    • @Dudenvideo
      @Dudenvideo Před 7 lety +3

    I have had the T3i since 2011 and it has been terrific. It was a compromise because it was all I could afford at the time but it has served me quite well. The 800D/T7i sounds like a great improvement on mine.

  • @bushcraftandastronomer.3775

    Just shows you don't need a pro camera to great photos. These entry level cameras are just as good. I own the canon 700D and took great photos. You can have as much fun with these cameras as pro cameras.

    June 29th in 2020. Just bought this camera. Owned a 550D aka T2i. I put that thing through so much abuse over 5 years in every corner of the world and every harsh climate from -30 in blizzards to blazing dry forest fires to brackish and salty humidity in the tropics. I still use it today. My 800D (T7i) has no idea what it just signed on for. I hope it holds up like its older relative. Great video mate. Subbed.. I would like to know how using it over the years played out. Maybe I should start looking at the videos you've made. THis one is my first seeing as I'm researching my purchase post haste.

  • @keithspillett7312
    @keithspillett7312 Před 7 lety +92

    Great video. I've been a pro photographer for over forty years, and my current camera of choice is the Canon 80D, which is VERY similar to this one. I know there are cameras about that 'measure' better and it doesn't have 4K - though I question the need for that, having owned cameras for a couple of years that DID have it and only having used it once - but it's as good as most people will ever need, especially with the right glass on the front. I've been through my 'full frame' phase, and still gravitated back to Canon APS-C. At the end of the day, if a picture looks right, then it IS right, no matter what it was shot on, and the current crop of Canons - 80D, 800D, 77D etc - are capable of wonderful results, and that dual pixel AF is mind-blowing for video, and much better than the Sonys that people seem to rave about 😀

      @Firstmanphotography  Před 7 lety +3

      +Keith Spillett Thanks Keith. Really appreciate this comment and your insight. I agree too. The cameras you mention are capable of pretty much everything photography wise that you throw at them.

    Good review. What do you think about fullframe vs aps-c in landscapephotography? How will full frame improve my photos? Will the full frame improve my photos at all? In my case from Nikon D7200 to Nikon D750

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  Před 7 lety +9

      +Jørg Terhart Full frame isn't going to make you a better photographer so won't necessarily improve your pictures. It will improve the potential for capturing better images though. Take my lighthouse shot from the last vlog as an example. That was taken at ISO 3200 to freeze the lighthouse in those dim conditions. It was relatively noisy on the Canon 5D Mark IV but on a cropped sensor camera it would have been unusable.
      Also there is no crop factor on full frame so a 16-35mm lens is exactly that. You therefore have the option of higher quality glass at the wide end. Eg the 10-18mm Canon and the 10-24 Canon EFs are OK but do not compare to the wide L glass.
      The upgrade to full frame is one most photographers strive to at some point. I've not come across many who have regretted it. Like I say in the video though you can still capture great landscape photography on a cropped sensor camera.

    • @jote1973
      @jote1973 Před 7 lety +1

      Thank you for the answer. I am taking pictures, therefore, a camera will not make a difference to the subject. Therefore I asked how I would notice it in my pictures that I took a full frame picture. What I've figured out until now, as you say too, it's in terms of noise I'm going to see the biggest difference. Given the northern lights photo and dark time in the winter, I will follow the market. I think that a Nikon D760 is coming soon.

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  Před 7 lety +1

      Most aurora shots are taken as a long exposure though so you can still keep your ISO down so noise shouldn't be a problem. You wont be sorry if you go full frame. Good luck. Appreciate your question.

      Nikon D760 does not seem to arrive so soon XD lol. I anyway chose to stick with DX. I print in 90cm with a D5300 and never found a problem, beside, with a 24MP sensor in DX it is really MANDATORY take a still image with a sturdy tripod because those so high MP in DX really are like 45 in FX, just a little shake and your image is to trash. I like hiking a lot and I preferred to travel light and spend less money rather than have FF expansive camera and lenses with more weight to carry. If you apply the good focal length of a DX it returns to you almost the same image (exception for the slightly different bokeh). The rest of the image is only up to you. I am super happy now with a D500 for reportage and streets or travel and a D7200 dedicated to landscapes and star-trails. ;)

    Fun video and lots of great info. I've been debating between this camera and the G7X for vlogging but I really feel like I'm leaning more toward the T7I. Thanks again from Texas.

    Thanks so much! This is so good to see what the actual results are - most of the other reviews I've seen are all about the specs which doesn't mean that much to me besides comparing numbers :)
    Did you use any software for the footage (to edit colour etc), or is this the raw video? Thanks again!

      +Ashley Hi Ashley. I shoot my video in camera very flat so I can make my adjustments in post production. That's what I did her so it's not totally raw. When you leave the camera to add sharpness, contrast and saturation though it still looks good.

    That last photo is great! It helped me decide whether to buy the 2 lens kit by Canon. It has the 10-18mm lens and the nifty 50 (50mm f/1.8). I think that's a good deal from Amazon.

      I was 12 when I started in Photography, that was 50 years ago, its a great camera, however, its taken me a long time to realise that its the photo that counts, not what you take it with. Seen some great shots taken with camera phones. Keep interested, its a hobby worth the effort.

    Nice review man. Just one thing. I'm not a vlogger. I shoot photos as hobby. More aligned to landscapes and nightscapes. My Nikon D5600 does okay I'm but thinking about D7500 or Canon 77D next.

    Great video! i have 2 questions for you
    1) how do you usually carry your camera while hiking. Do you have it attached to the gorilla pod, or do you carry it without it?
    2) how do you record while rotating the camera as you have done at 8:42. Some people have a timelaps device on the tripod that can do that with a click of a button, are you using that?
    thanks again!

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  Před 7 lety

      +fob Hi mate. Thanks for the questions. When I'm hiking my vlogging camera is in my hand attached to the gorillapod. The main camera is in my bag. The panning shots I just shoot handheld and then add a warp stabiliser in post.

      Good point. I'll bear that in mind for the next one. The 10-18mm is one of the most affordable lenses Canon make though, so if you went for that and the body only option you wouldn't be spending much more.

    Hi Adam, great review of the 800D! Amazing location too 👍 was wondering what are your thoughts about using a pentamirror viewfinder of the 800D vs. the usual pentaprism viewfinder found in DSLRs, especially when shooting in low light conditions. Cheers mate!

    Hi, you did a super video review!! I've a question, what kind of lenses did you had to the 800d when you were vlogging? Because I saw other video review, and when they were filming them selves, they seemed to be closer to the camera although they had the arm outstretched... I don't know if you got what I wanted to ask hah ( I'm not English speaker so I'm not able to ask that in some easier way) Thankss
