      As in people from Great Britain (or British) would have either English, Welsh or Scottish accents? "Accents and dialects vary widely across the United Kingdom; as such, a single "British accent" does not exist, but someone could be said to have an English, Welsh, or Scottish accent although these all have several different sub-types." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_accents_of_English

    • @Lilly_DetachedQueen
      @Lilly_DetachedQueen Před 10 měsíci

      @@taylorguerinwilkens9808I'm a non-native English speaker. I agree. Emma Watson's attempt on doing an American accent really sucks. She was the best playing Hermione Granger. But after observing her next projects after Harry Potter, I realized she's not that of a great actress. She can't pull off any challenging roles. She is very picky. I heard she was chosen to play Cinderella but she decided to play Belle instead. She tends to incorporate or associate her women empowerment ideals in a simple Disney role, when it's not even necessary.
      I don't know but I view her as someone who feels very entitled in Hollywood just because she's British. There are much better non-American actresses out there.
      I'd rather pick Margot Robbie. She can play any roles despite being Australian. Her gorgeous face meets the standards. She can do a princess role in a Disney movie, she can play Barbie, she can be in a historical movie, at the same time she can also play a badass character in a sci-fi movie. She's so dynamic and versatile. Her American accent is also the best.

      they weren't laughably terrible, but you could still it's not the actor's natural accent, which can pull the viewer out of the moment, and for some of us, be a bit cringey. For the accent to work, the viewers (particularly viewers from the same country as the character, so American viewers for American characters) need to be unable to tell that the actor is not actually from same place as the character. An example of a good American accent is Hugh Jackman, who if it wasn't for wikipedia, I as an American would never have known that he was Australian.

    • @Rowgue51
      @Rowgue51 Před 8 lety +7

      You're not the only one. After they rattled off a few I thought this video was supposed to be a joke or something. I was expecting to hear people totally butchering things and sounding like an American doing a really bad Irish or British accent. But these people all sound just fine.
      Besides most Americans have a really vanilla generic accent that doesn't have many distinctive characteristics that it would be obvious if they were butchered. Now if somebody was trying to portray a really specific really distinctive regional accent like a Boston or New York or Chicago accent it would be really obvious and sound ridiculous if done badly. But then most American actors even sound ridiculous trying to imitate those accents.

    I think this is a bit of a reach. Speaking as an American, I don't find these to be so horrible as this video says. By these criteria, lots of Americans have bad American accents. Christopher Walken, for example.
    Regarding accents becoming more pronounced during the most dramatic moments, plenty of real Americans do this, especially if they have "unlearned" regional accents in favor of what is considered to be unaccented American English. For instance, I used to date a woman from NYC, who only had an accent when she was angry.

There's Lancashire accents, Cornish accents, West Country accents, etc. But we identify something in all of those and generally pinpoint them to be British. Same thing with America. We have Midwest accents, New York accents, a ton of different Southern accents, and whatnot. It's true we're a "melting pot", but most major countries are like that. You can find accents from Canada, China, Burma, Australia, and Kenya all over the world - not just in America.

    7:16 I'm a South Carolina native. His accent is pretty good. From what I've observed, people from South Carolina and North Carolina have similar dialects. It definitely sounds like a Carolina southern accent, which has a couple of different variations. His variation is not as thick as the ones I hear in my family, but the pronunciation seems to be the same and he does open his throat as much on any vowel sounds, which doesn't really mean accuracy. I haven't seen the entire movie, but from the clips you've shown, his accent isn't that bad. The Carolinas aren't that big in terms of film towns, so it's obvious that people don't know what somebody from either of the Carolinas sounds like.

Far more odd-sounding than any of these was David Tennant's accent in Gracepoint.

    As a student of American regional dialects, it is safe to say that most of these were just fine. Sure, some were a little wonky at times, but overall, they matched at least a sub-region of an American dialect. As other commenters have stated, the South for example is dialectal region. However, the South has its own sub-regions of dialect.
    A better example may be the Great Lakes/Midwest region. In the film 'Fargo', a North Dakotan accent is represented (and very well at that, based on my time living in the area). Though similar and in the same dialectal region, North Dakotans and Minnesotans (Lake of the Woods to northern St. Louis County) sound different [similar, but different]. Travel further east around the Lake Superior shoreline and one will notice those of the North Woods in Wisconsin have a different accent than Upper Michiganders.
    My point is that while there is an American "Southern" accent, there are sub-regional accent differences within the South.
