  • This is a prime example of a day in my life as a truck driver. Trucking is full of twists and turns, boring days, and exciting days. Every day in the trucking industry has something to teach us about our industry, people, and/or ourselves, so keep truckin'!
I'm almost to my destination. Next stop Shell Rotella Photoshoot!

Fellow female trucker here. I’m 47 and have been driving a rig for 26 years. I mostly run a flatbed now, (I’m an owner op, 1997 Peterbilt 379) but have driven everything out there. Anxiety is very real and trucking is no easy job. Take care of yourself. Just wanted to say hello and that I enjoy your channel. It’s great to see younger women in the field. 💖

I am a 47 year old woman truck driver. I’ve been an owner operator with my husband for six years now. But I barely just got my CDL license two months ago. I know the trucking industry inside and out on the business side of course. But I knew nothing about what the actual driver goes through. I have so much more respect for truck drivers now that I have learned how hard it really is. I almost gave up when I was in trucking school it wasn’t easy. And I got to give it to all of you out there that have your license. I also thought I was going to be the oldest person in my class and it was crazy I was actually one of the youngest in my class! There was a lot of retirees that were getting their license. I’ve started a CZcams channel myself and I love watching fellow women truck drivers on CZcams. It gives me the confidence to start my own channel. That is not an easy task either. Filming and editing is a whole job in itself. And I give all of you that are CZcamsrs so much credit for working so hard. And the fact that she has a fleet of trucks, is a truck driver herself, and does CZcams she’s a great inspiration to all women truck drivers!!!!

I am glad to see you know what thalidomide is. Our neighbor across the street first child was a thalidomide child. She was in a Texas State School for most of her life. They would visit her every weekend and bring her home on holidays. She could barely talk and she had difficulties with her motor skills but she was very sweet. The FDA made a bunch of changes after that.

Shelby -- When I was a trucker I had a voice recorder that I primarily used for recording state line mileages but I also used it for recording ideas and thoughts while driving. That way I could concentrate on driving and still get things recorded safely. Small towns and small cities in Texas are the best. They are so interesting. I had a layover in Abilene for a couple days and I had a blast. Same with Tyler, Texas. Safe travels, my friend!

Writing things down, giving them a "resting place", I like it and agree! I write down stuff I need to do and cross them off. Something gratifying about crossing off things to do. Keeps it on paper and outta my mind.

Hi Shelby! I love your content, and I love that you're willing to share your struggles with anxiety. I'm in the same boat, anxious about "I don't know what" all the time, and you're right that writing stuff down and getting it out of my head does help!
One thing I did when I was driving a lot (before the pandemic) was stick a little audio recorder on my dash so that I could easily leave voice notes to myself while driving when I had a stray thought. Then later on I could copy them into my journal. Don't know if that's a possibility for you, but it really helped me with the "get out of my head" anxiety.

Shelby, a little trick I recently learned from another CZcams driver, "Trucking through life," Chuck, showed that he puts a Ziptie on his electrical connector without cutting the tail off. So when he needs to shim the connector he jams the tail into it. He never has to make a shim out of a bottle or cardboard. I'm embarrassed to say that I never thought about that given I've been a professional driver for over 21 years. Keep up the good work, you're doing great. Dale

YEARS AGO, I rolled out of our Oakland yard with 55000lbs
of printing press paper rolls heading for Salt Lake City. They
dispatched me out late, 5:30. I got to fight the traffic out of the
San Francisco Bay Area on I-80. Finally after some hours after
dark I got into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
And I had to pee. Bad. I kept looking for a place to stop but I
saw none. There is a rest stop way up near Donner Summit
but I couldnt wait. I finally spied a wide shoulder which looked
just about wide enough & long enough for the rig so I put into
it. |It was pitch dark, far away from the towns, I opened my
drivers door & jumped down into a patch of weeds betwix
the truck & the pavement and !BAM! I jumped square onto
a rattlesnake! I called up into the sleeper & woke up my other
driver & he jumped out of the truck, helped me around to the
passenger side and got me up into the truck. He raced around
the truck and dropped our trailer, jumped in & peeled out as we
headed uphill. He got on the CB and contacted the CHP who
was just up ahead a couple of miles. He told my driver to pedal
to the metal & he picked us up and gave us an escort into
Truckee, Ca with his lights a flashing. At the emergency entrance
they had a wheel chair and a nurse waiting for me & she rushed
me in to the waiting doctor. My driver finally was able to catch
his breath & went in & gave the receiving nurse all my info & our
company insurance info. Finally, the nurse stopped, looked at
my driver and said, 'So, were you going to put any pants on or
what?" He had jumped out the truck and done all this in his boxers.
So, how did your day go?
    !

Hey Shelby, thanks for sharing about your anxiety. I also deal with a certain degree of that, which is not at all helped by my love of coffee! I am pretty open on my channel in talking about mental health, because it's just a universal experience and the more people who talk about it (especially in places like the trucking space, where stoic struggle is supposed to be a point of pride), the more we make it okay for everyone to be who they are, unapologetically. Trucking is a stressful life, and when you are prone to worry and anxiety, you have to work that much harder to process the mental static that your brain likes to make for you.
You're doing great, and I appreciate you!
PS -- I'm all about the healthy oatmeals too ... I'm a big fan of the Nature's Path Qi'a oatmeal, and I like to add nuts and dried fruit, and some oat milk. Easy to eat from a cup in the truck. I also have a hard time eating in the morning, so I tend to do a healthy drink instead and do the oatmeal later. At home, I make these awesome giant shakes, which won't really work in the truck ... so I just make a mixture of OJ, apple cider vin, Kefir, water, collagen protein, metamucil, turmeric powder and water. I know it sounds weird, but it's actually really good and settles my stomach.

To remove the remains of the sticker from the windshield, I can recommend simple glass cleaner. Simply moisten a sponge well with it, press on it for a few minutes and then it's usually quite easy to peel the stuff off. Here in Germany, we have something like "Sidolin", with which you can even get the sticky rubber coating of older ThinkPads off without any problems, with a bit of muscle power, of course. 😉

Shelby, you might want to look into getting a diesel-powered APU for your truck. It'll keep you warm in the winter, cool in the summer, your engine warm in winter (APU's are plumbed into the cooling system of your engine), and you won't have to idle your prime mover. It'll save you money on fuel AND it will save your EGR valve and EGR cooler (for those that don't know, EGR is Exhaust Gas Recirculation). Your truck engine uses about 1 gal per hour at idle, so for your 10 hours off, you're burning 10 gallons of very expensive fuel. An APU will burn ONE gallon for 10 hours, saving you a fortune over the course of a year. They're not cheap (10K plus inc installation) but they'll pay for themselves in a year to 18 months.

I pretty much have been keeping my hair in one long simple braid kept between my t-shirt and my under A-shirt. My hair can be fluffy and is fine so I have learned to avoid all those knots (rats) by doing that as soon as the towel comes off and a bit of leave in is applied.

Hey Shelby, FIX IT tip for the trailer lights/pigtail. If you pour water into the holes, then dump the water out, and plug it back in, that should get your lights working again as we all know, water is a conductor of electricity. Not a permanent fix but it should get you down the road until you can get it fixed and it “should” take care of the flickering. OR, get the prongs wet before you plug in the cord. 👍🏾

I lived in eastern NM and west Texas for years and have lived in Austin since 96. I recognized so many landmarks! When you turned on the highway in Brownfield I even said aloud: "Is she in Brownfield?" And yeah, that hospital in San Angelo is a place for the physically and mentally disadvantaged. You didn't want to say the slang term for those babies either and I appreciate that. I was born in 1953 and there were many babies harmed by pharmaceutical companies rushing a drug to market too soon. There were many lawsuits brought against companies back then. It's good to see you back on the road!

    Hello Shelby
    Another awesome video.
You have such a beautiful smile. I like it when you smile it makes me smile too when I am having a bad day..
I also like the small towns, to me that is what America is and comes from.
    If that makes sense.
I think alot of us viewers are missing Dakota too...

I know I’m late but good luck with the Shell event, assuming it’s not already over, in which case I hope it went well! Can’t wait for you to get Dakota back, that’ll definitely help you with being able to handle the dark a fair bit more! Keep killing it Shelby!!!

When I was young I lived with Anxiety. Then as I became your age I got over it for about 15 years because of life ya know. Now I feel like its come back a bit as I get older. I believe its because we feel like we are forgetting stuff. Like you as long as its in front of my face I do it. You have allot on your plate even if you seem relaxed I am sure. Dakota being there would help for sure! Take care and get some rest after the photos. Like you from the PNW. Been to Texas a bunch. My daughter lives in Austin plus I would visit allot from a past job. Love the sunsets there. Mostly the ones closer to the Gulf. Kinda like those Florida Sunsets you may remember. Take care and rest up!!!

    I just love you!
I’m so much like that too, I’m glad I’m not alone.
I’ve heard of that horrible drug also. So much sadness with that drug and what it did to infants.
I deal with anxiety it’s not a fun thing ! Thank you for the coping skills.

Instead of spreading the prongs, look inside the end of the pigtail. The "sleeves" that the prongs slide into are split lenghtways. Buy yourself the smallest screwdriver you can find (I have a jewelers screwdriver) and pry it into the top of the split along the sleeves and slightly pry the corner inwards. It tightens the sleeves and you will not have light issues and don't run the risk of breaking the prongs.

Pretty cool Shelby! I love going through small towns too. Some are creepy and you pray you don’t break down, especially with no cell service. I miss your boss too. Maybe next trip.

A lot of those pier & beam homes in the oilfield were built & brought in during the 50s. Most had asbestos siding on them too. Big Spring used to have a big military base, and had eroded rather severely since it was shut down. If you ever come thru Snyder, let me know. Lunch is on me!

My hair gets tangled with big knots too. If I put it in a high pony it doesn't. Of course combing it every morning and evening helps too. The content you bring is great. Keep it coming.

I feel you on the email thing. I work a State job in Payroll as primary for some programs, and back-up for other programs. I have to organize and prioritize emails like crazy. I literally woke up at 5 am on Saturday and realized there was a request I didn't send out on Friday, and had to make a notification in my phone for 8 am Monday so I wouldn't forget. 🤣
