  • If you've been in the market for a do-it-all mountain bike, chances are, you've dealt with the inner debate around travel, build spec, weight and what matters most. We get asked quite a bit, "How much does build spec matter?" Depending on how much time we've got to chat we could go 'til we're blue in the face, but in short, it matters a lot. How much is a lot, and does that percentage really mean you should suffer from analysis paralysis? We're not so sure. Thanks to ‪@pivotcyclesusa‬ we were able to conduct a fun few weeks of testing on a perfect platform to see just how big (or small) the differences are. Our testers put the Pivot Trail 429 head-to-head against the...Pivot Trail 429 "Enduro." Pivot isn't the only brand offering a versatile frame in two different build options designed for riders who want similar but different things out of their trail bike. Stay tuned to learn about this impressively capable mountain bike, and see if the Trail or Enduro build spec comes out on top, or is fastest to the bottom, or....whatever aspect of performance matters most to you!
    As with all of our Dissected Features, this is not intended to be a long-term review or endorsement of a product but is instead a chance for our viewers and readers to get unique looks into new bikes, performance comparisons and other in-depth topics. We thank Pivot Cycles for the opportunity to create this feature and getting you some valuable beta on this lightweight, yet impressively capable trail ripper.

    Running different tires seems like a mistake. I get it, but you've introduced another variable, which you agree makes them feel different, when having the same tires (how they came) would level this out more. Certainly on the timed runs.

    I would say that’s more a Downcountry vs Trail spec comparison. I wouldn’t put a bike with a 130/140mm suspension in Enduro category.

    I have the Enduro build. I added some Cush core to the stock tires (Dissectors) and rip it down the black diamonds here in the PNW with no issues. Perfect bike.

    I turned my GT Sensor into a mini GT Force via aftermarket upgrades- essentially a 140mm enduro bike. It’s cool how these modern ‘in between’ bikes take so well to either mode of setup

    Was between the Transition Smuggler and the 429 enduro build. Ended up going with the Transition and I’m very pleased but that Pivot is dead sexy!

    I just got the 429 trail build brunch ride and it’s amazing. I’m not small 6’3 235lbs and it is thee funnest bike I’ve ever ridden. It is simply a rocket. My other bike is a 22 Stumpjumper evo expert while that bike is also great it doesn’t reward you like the 429 does.

    Love this bike!! I put a Pike to split the difference in efficiency, weight and downhill prowess and love it. I got the Team xtr which sheds some weight and I’m just a little over 27.5lbs. Best of both worlds. Hopefully Pivot or Fox will come out with that in between 35mm fork. For now I’m extremely happy

    great video. I ended up acquiring an enduro 429 from a friend. I think I would have preferred the standard trail 429 but at the time the enduro was the best deal I could get. with how I ride I don’t think I would notice much of a difference between them. I always thought it was interesting they decided to have an “enduro” version with beefed up suspension but still 120mm of travel in the shock. seems a little silly but what do I know.

    I have the Enduro build, swapped to Ohlins with WAO Convergence Triads on Hydras, Conti Kryptotal Enduro Soft, Dominion T4s with MTX reds on HS2 200mm, shaved a little weight with XX cranks and XX SL transmission, my own cockpit setup and it handles the PNW well, just get fatigued faster with less travel than my bigger bikes. But if you want something around 31 lbs and very reliable, this is going to be very hard to beat.

  • @marklouieadame
    @marklouieadame Před 3 měsíci

    I have both trail and enduro. The trail bike is good on tight descending and climbs good. Enduro is like a slow climber but gives you stability on descending. Both are fun actually

  • @acfella100

    I have a Trail 429 v3 (this model) and have built it up Enduro (ish) originally I upgraded the Fox 34 to 140mm with a DSD Runt (great) and just updated the fork to RS Pike 140mm with RC2 damper. It’s lighter than the Fox 36 and Fox 34 and def is more stout than the 34. I also upgraded to the Super Deluxe Ultimate and honestly I like the Fox Float better. The stock tune on the Super Deluxe ultimate is way too light and I get a ton of pedal bob and it bottoms out way too much. Should be noted I’m 276lbs soooo there is that.

  • @brianpeterson6872

    I'll probably be the odd man out with this, but I want the Enduro build and drop the fork to 130mm.. Being a bit heavier, I like the beefier fork, but I would like the shorter travel for my local rides..

  • @BramBiesiekierski
    @BramBiesiekierski Před 3 měsíci

    The biggest problem with low spec build is that it just breaks down and wears out super fast. Then you go and buy the higher spec, over priced parts. (Exactly as intended by the big players in the bike industry.)
    Low tier (shitmano) brakes will break levers etc everytime you crash. Each time needing to be thrown away and replaced.
    Low tier drivetrains will wear out in a season. Wearing out derailer pulleys, wearing out cassettes. Wearing out the interface between the casssete/hub. Again, needing to be replaced with new in short time.
    Low spec suspension isn't so much a reliability issue, and if you are happy to just ride can be done economically. But like everything, want features then pay double or tripple.

    How does the Shadowcat compare with the Trail 429? Been goin back and forth between those 2. Lovin the pink colorway for whatever reason lol
    It'd be the Xtr build with carbon wheels.

    • @TheLoamWolf
      @TheLoamWolf  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Shadowcat errs more on the playful side, but feels a little less efficient/doesn't carry speed as well through the rough. Both killer rigs and not a huge amount in it all things considered!

      I bought a 2022 429. Great bike but I recently demoed a shadowcat. Now I wish I would’ve got the shadowcat. Too late so I got 27.5” wheels for my 429. I’ll probably be changing out shock and form at some point too. I’d go with the Shadowcat though. Such a fun bike but it’s all about if you value maneuverability over the rollover of the 29’s

    @shaunschneeberger6301 Před 3 měsíci

    This is my opinion but i don’t think the enduro version is an actual enduro bike. 160mm and up is enduro and also the ice tec rotors definitely not for enduro as i used them and they warped every time under pressure, when i switched to sram 2mm rotors instead of the 1.8mm ice tec rotors never had that problem again. Currently riding specialized enduro with 180mm front 170mm back, code ultimate brakes raceface next R handle bar and enduro carbon rims its a beast. Im 107kg with gear. I think weight definitely plays a role in travel needed as well, depending what you doing.

    • @TheLoamWolf
      @TheLoamWolf  Před 3 měsíci

      The enduro spec is definitely not an enduro bike, we agree. We haven’t experienced the same issues with the Ice Tec rotors though - we’ve even had them on a dh bike in a bikepark without problem.

      @@TheLoamWolf Not really just for steep climbs. Being on the mid to lower side of fitment range on the large I found myself quite hunched over even with the seat slammed forward. 77deg+ is a way more comfortable in general, I'll never go back to less.
