I fly at least once a year and have explained that I have an insulin pump and I have worn my pump through the x-ray machine. No problem at all. I even had a TSA agent ask me about my pump because I think she had a child with T1D and thanked me for the information.

I travel 70% of the year. My Dexcom unit has been through the scanner on and off and nothing happened. But I think it is safe to do a "Shutdown", put it through the scanner, then power it back on the other side. Everything should continue as normal. I don't know for sure, but you can't damage an electronic unit of there is no circuitry traveling through the unit. Its just a piece of plastic and a circuit board with no electrical current running through it. Safe travels!

Hi Danika I want to say that I love that you can not only manage your diabetes but do it with a smile and that motivates me so much. As far as bringing juice in your carry on though I do every time I travel and as long as its not open and you mention that it is medicinal for diabetes they let you carry it.

I am so glad that you made this video! I looked at it about half a year ago and TOTALLY forgot I am going to take my FIRST plane flight at the end of SEPTEMBER! This helped me not be so worried about my diabetic supplies.

Another reason not to put insulin or meters in the hold is it's often neither heated or presurised so both can be damaged and potentially not obviously so you pump in defective insulin with no effect.
I've always got letters to travel from the National Health Service which I present let them read and that's usually the end of it. If you can get a letter from your doctor with your name on it certainly doesn't hurt.
Enjoy England, hope our weather picks up a bit before you get here!

Good Video - im a nurse and a T1D side note. IF your on a medtronic minimed pump like me... you should just have a pat down unless you want to disconnect your transmitter because that also can't go through x ray or full body scanner. Its super easy TSA will tell you you can but just say ok thanks, but id rather do this..

All great advice. I just wanted to comment on the juice thing. I usually have several bottles of water and juice with me when I go through security and I NEVER have a problem. Bring juice. Bring water. It's fine.

When I went to Hawaii this year with my family ( my first time traveling with my Insulin Pump) I had more issue getting out of the airport from my city than I did getting thru other cities.

I live in England! But the airport security is fairly lax, and I've never even been asked about it, even back when I used proper needles with a bottle of insulin, they never cared.

and i always just say before i even tell them i have diabetes "Id like to opt out, i have diabetes and a pump" Also I heard FRIO insulin cooling bags are great for un opened bottles.. ive yet to try. Also you can bring juice doesn't matter the amount TSA lets diabetics do this they just want to test one bottle or if its a juice box open one when they ask so they can test the fumes.. says so right on TSA website :) ---- happy traveling

oh no, I usually just keep my pump on and walk through the metal detector, but I usually hold it in my hand and say it's an insulin pump. nothing has happened thus far and I've traveled a lot. but in NYC I got that pat down because she felt my site, lol!!

I am diabetic myslef. It is hard for me to travel because of my meter abd my meds. You should vring a small plastic container to put needles and test tests and etc.

Aside from the whole 'lost luggage' issue, insulin should never go into the luggage hold anyways due to the lack of temperature control there. Frozen insulin is just as useless as overheated insulin...

With your Dexcom transmitter on, can you go through both the old-school metal detector and the new "hold your hands in the air that you just don't care" scanners?
