The US Open is the final Grand Slam of the year and takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The 2021 US Open saw Russia's Daniil Medvedev and Great Britain's Emma Raducanu claim the men's and women's singles titles. It was both players' first major title, with 18-year-old Raducanu becoming the first-ever qualifier to achieve the feat. The 2022 US Open main draw is scheduled to go ahead between August 30 - September 11.

Emma zoning out when Leyla was complaining to the umpire right in-front of her sets her for the win. The ability to just block out distraction.
Staying calm is always an advantage in such situations. I still remember how many matches John McEnroe lost unnecessarily when he once again lost his self control and started shouting at umpires and opponents.
It actually had given her the fire to finish off the match with aplomb.
i love how emma has a stoic attitude.. i mean for her yeah u talk there while me i wouls chill and dont care... leylah should have took some timeout but she didnt sit down and relax..
After coming home to the UK, Emma watched a recording of the entire match. Later, on a BBC interview, she said she never realised how much stress her medical time out caused, showing she was totally in the zone during it's entirety, whilst Leylah wasted her time arguing over something that couldn't even be halted and would have to run it's course before the game could recommence. It was stupidly naive, and perhaps if her father had been there, something that may not have occurred.
When Sakkari had to take a break to change her skirt in the semi-final with Emma, there was no histrionics from her, despite being on a 3 game winning streak. And guess what? She took the 4th game aswell when Sakkari finally returned to serve.
@@almawalker1432 She had to fight off a 2nd break (ad out) point after this (30-40). Forgot about that 2nd break point saved. Tough cookie. The ace was the cherry on the top.
The reaction when Emma won the first set was pure gold.
Yes; she never did that in any of her previous wins.

The medical timeout is the moment that differentiates a Champion and a runner-up. That was the umpire's call, not even Emma's. That call was according to the grand slam rulebook. Emma didn't want that call either because it interrupted her rhythm too, but she did what the umpire asked her to do, was completely cool and remained focused, while Leylah was upset and arguing with the empire. I said before. If Laylah had stayed calm, perhaps used the timeout to reflect how to improve her serves (her serves were certainly not at championship level in that match), she could have had a better chance to catch up. Emma did what a champion should do at that critical moment.

I don't even think the MTO mattered. If you look at Fernandez's career especially the 2021 season she has a bad record. She has not won more than 2 matches at a tournament in 14 of her 17 appearances in 2021. She is consistently trying to come from behind in almost all of her matches. That itself is makes me have less faith in that style. She may have decent attitude and energy but she gives away too many break points opportunities and unforced errors.
I didn't see the match live (I'm not in the USA) but until I watched this, I didn't realise just how much the crowd were with Leylah and against Emma. That Emma put all that out of her mind and focussed on winning every point she could, as a qualifier on the biggest court in the world at her first final is (IMHO) remarkable
That's what amazes me. Leylah isn't even American yet the crowd were clearly North America fans. It must be mentally brutal for Emma to hear them chanting for Leylah over her. I would be somewhat depressed/upset so the fact that Emma just ignored that and played her best was amazing on Emmas part. She's a strong woman!
I think the Fernandez camp made a big effort to ingratiate her to the NY crowd throughout the tournament. Not a criticism, just an observation. Not sure how genuine it all was as her sister seemed to have to keep reminding Leylah to smile throughout the final, I guess to keep up the happy-go-lucky image they wanted to portray. Personally, I found the NY comments in Leylah’s post match speech a little too sickly and they felt a bit fake. It all seemed a little out of odds with her character as shown in the MTO meltdown and maybe a ploy to secure future NY crowd support. Just my opinion but I have the feeling if this match was replayed now, knowing everything we now know, Emma would receive a lot more support.
Leylah trying to milk the 9/11 situation was cringeworthy. It reeked of desperation. This was evident when she forgot what she wanted to say and had to ask to be given the mic again so she could just jazz up the crowd behind her, even more. Leylah must have been coached to say all that since it didn't feel natural at all. She already showed her support for 9/11 so to keep going on about it even further showed she was really trying to milk it. I'm glad Emma didn't try to behave this way.
It was classy how Emma's and her Team's calm reactions to the massive crowd supporting Leylah! Also, Emma in her presentation speech she stood above all her opponents and gave that graceful congratulations to Leylah despite the fact that a scenario during Emma's MTO. It was very nice see to see how Emma maintained her calmness when Leylah argued with the referee in front of her!
I also didn't realize the crowd was so biased until I see the full match now.
So glad Emma Raducanu didn’t convert her first two championship points because the finish was so much more epic with her bloodied knee, medical timeout and awesome ace.
Yes and no. I rather Emma broke and won on the 1st championship point. A tidy 90 minutes with far less drama.
It should be continued, no time out until finish the set. She relaxed in 3 minutes hahaha drink of fluids ang take sweets..

Emma is so gracious, even though Leylah complained to the referee when she was receiving treatment for a bleeding cut on her knee, she did not bear any grudge against her. During Emma's thank you speech, she made no mention of Leylah complaint to the referee. Also she was very sincere and generous in her praise of Leylah. What a Champ Emma is.
And she has to be of strong mind to deal with 90% of the audience being for Leylah!

because the delay was ridiculous it was just a cut but she had a long break when Leylah was on the upper hand..its easy to zone out when you're the cause of a delay.

How cool headed wasRaducanu in that final game ? Amazing composure in the face of great play by Fernandez , a few idiots in the crowd trying to put her off and applauding her service faults ( classy) the medical timeout and Fernandez histrionics while she was being treated . She just kept focused on playing each point . Remarkable

There's something very special in Emma's game. It feels *vital* to watch, it demands your attention somehow, I just can't quite explain - bit like watching peak Fed. To think this might not be the best she'll play? Unbelievable.

I agree Andras. I see a lot of Federer in her, especially her all round play and movement. You feel she has the talent to react to anything during a rally and come out on top. She is a wonderful player.
I feel exactly the same. It’s a truly magical game. She floats and her timing is impeccable. It’s actually hypnotic and exciting. Some points she wins I just start laughing. She’s out of this world. And this is just her early game, she’s going to get better

Serena won her first major in 1999 aged 18 and didn't reach another final until the US open two years later, where she lost. She won her second major in 2002. I hope the British press and public are patient with Emma and give her a chance. If she can stay focused She could end up Britain's all-time most successful tennis player.

After all, Serena won her first major in 1999 aged 18 and didn't reach another final until the US open two years later, where she lost. She didn't win her second major until 2002, aged 21.
Raducanu needs time and focus, and even that isn't a guarantee of success.

Emma Raducanu going be a tennis superstar!
This was for us in the UK almost a dream come true. No way in a million years did we expect this and with every round i was just saying wow she has done so well to get this far. The final was shown live in the UK on a free to view channel and got great ratings. As a life long tennis fan the win by Emma has brought such joy and is up there with Andy winning Wimbledon and going to the London Olympics as my lifes sporting highlights.

Even though you know the outcome it's still exciting to watch this match.
The crowd was by the way quite hostile towards Raducanu (I didn't notice that before) but she remained very calm and very friendly, even after Leylah's tantrum during the medical break.
The crowd's hostility only served to make Emma's final victory that much sweeter.

I watched this live and was so stressed I was doing pressups at every change of end. Then in the middle of the night after she had won I watched it again so I could just enjoy it without the stress. I just watched it again! Go Emma! Go London!

On the final game medical time out, the pressure and rhythm of play affected Emma even more when serving and 30-40 down. On top of that, the devilish dark arts deliberated a few feet away in front of her by her so called "innocent, I'm the victim, its unfair to me" opponent, added to the difficulties on such a crucial moment.
Having to overcome 2 break points, Emma serves the ACE to seal the deal - this is the display of a true Champion - revealing her true fabric when under enormous pressure. THE REAL DEAL.

When you loose a final, no one remembers you. Do you remember who played Lindsay Davenport in 1999 Wimbledon final? No, but you will always remember who played with Osaka in the us open which she won. So when you create a controversy you are also making sure you will not be forgotten. And look at the blatant lie; I did not see blood ? Excuse me, it was all up there on the screens, and you were on top of her head not even needing to look up. And if you did not see blood, why in your second statement you said that you were not aware of the rules. So lies have no feet.

Leylah's whining over the medical time out, the incessant hopping and fist pumping and the constant camera shots of the angry family didn't endear viewers to her. Emma stayed laser-focused on the goal, showed class and elegance from start to finish. People may have entered that stadium as Fernandez fans but then saw the true future of tennis on the other side of the net and left as Raducanu fan as well.

Leylah is a graceful winner, but a sore loser. When things don't go her way in a match, watch out. Being emotional is one thing, but being mean is another. Emma definitely deserved the medical timeout; just look at the blood oozing from her left knee.

Yep I agree Bob. I think Emma is going to become so popular worldwide and people will look back on this and be amazed the crowd were mostly against her. Bit like Federer in the early days before people really got to know how fantastic a player and person he was.
I thought the guy that sounded like Kermit was quite respectful of both players… I enjoyed his commentary on all these highlights videos. I listened to the match live on BBC Radio 5 live and it was very biased towards Emma.
Leylah is from Canada. We have a lot of Canadians working in NY. Plus Leyhah got the support of many Filipinos while most of Emma's supporters got stuck in England. But there were many Brits supporting their baby girl in that stadium. Even Tim Henman was there.

That winning shot for the first set was an absolute bullet
So impressed with one aspect of Emma taking the prize and it bodes so well for her going forward in terms of her champion mentality. All the way to the final her popularity was growing and she was the darling of the crowd, which is great for an 18 yo kid. Easy to produce when everyone’s behind you, right? The big day arrives and now it is different, maybe 70% of the crowd is against her. Why? What’s happening? I worried it might affect her as well as helping her opponent. No problem at all when you are a true champion. Didn’t bat an eyelid, well done Emma. Magic.
The crowd likes her because she defeated the top seeded players
ESPN commentator McNeary,Evert praises her and all that praises went to her head that she's so arrogant that in the end she became even have the nerve to question the umpire when Emma had a time out.Emma. never was affected by those rude crowd and she focus her mind on the game .In the meantime LF was becoming desperate to win.Her desperation turn into total despair.
Actually she did have one match when most of the crowd was behind her opponent, and that was when playing Shelby Rogers in the R16.

I didn't watch much WTA in the last few years( probably will sound biased but ATP was far better) but with so many young women upping their game and ATP slowly fading away I started watching far more of the women stuff.

Agreed. I re-watched the final and her other matches. Emma's ability to play savvy mind games is remarkable. She is young, physically she can still develop, but her on-court strategic thinking and execution is beyond her age, and that is not something that can be easily coached. It comes with her. It is incredible she can play that level of mind games consistently throughout the entire tournament.
Emma put in her sweat and blood. When you are in complete devotion towards what you want and keep an unwavering focus, no one can deny you the success! It is waiting for you! 🎉🎊🙏

It was absolutely pathetic and immature for Fernandez to cry and whine at the tournament staff when Raducanu took a medical timeout. She was BLEEDING.
I don’t think it’s a big deal. She wasn’t shouting or aggressive, she was upset and crying. It’s the biggest match of her life. It didn’t affect the outcome of the match so I’m willing to let it go.
She seems to get easily upset and then loses her self control what in the end works against her. I think that's also the reason why she was continually remembered by her sister to smile, it looks as if they have trained her to smile in order to stay calm.

what a match, and it affected me a great deal.
During the tournament, after (like most) so many ups and downs in my own life, I was 50/50 on opening my own bike shop. Big risk, big rewards.
Listening to Emma throughout the tournament, her comments on playing things point-by-point, focussing on what you CAN control and just following the game plan... that really helped me, and still does.
3 weeks from the final, I now have my own bicycle shop in Notting Hill, London. I'm grateful to Emma, and somehow feel my fate is tied with hers.

Footwork footwork footwork. Emma moves round the court like Steffi Graf with the footwork of Roger Federer. Beautiful movement to watch, seems to glide rather than run. Get the feet right and everything else follows and Emma makes her approach perfectly. If the feet are wrong, everything else you do to make the shot becomes a compromise. If only we could see Emma vs Cici Bellis, another exponent of how to move on a tennis court.

This was one of the best finals because they were evenly matched, young and NO fear of losing-then.
emma played 10 matches but had only 7 hrs on court.. while leylah played 7 matches spent 12 in court.. emma is so efficient
You forgot to take into account that Fernandez had to play 3 of the top 5 seeds at the US Open. Raducanu had easier matchups overall than Fernandez.
@@filmneye what you said is just wrong. Emma had the #1 seed on her side. Emma beats the players who defeated the top seeds. You don't get to gram slam final by luck.
@@filmneye This is debatable. Fernandez has a losing record against most of the opponents that they have both faced. Sakkari won 6-2 6-2 over Fernandez and Rogers has won 2 matches against Fernandez. 14 of the 17 tournaments this year Fernandez has not won more than 2 matches (e.g. gone home in round 2).

Thanks for putting the whole game up. It was riveting to watch even though I already knew the outcome! I didn't how much crowd supports Leylah had in this match. Must had been hard for Emma.
Two reasons for crowd support. First she is a Canadian and American would support a Canadian over a Briton. Second, she is a USA resident and lives in Florida. Third, Emma is Chinese origin, and Americans have lately become quite hostile against Chinese. The same reason about which Djokovic had no idea why all of a sudden Americans started to love him, he was playing against a Russian.

But I remember that in the past it happened regularly for instance in rugby, soccer, etc, simply because there were at that time no rules and it was left to the player himself to decide what to do. But as said I got the impression that Leiyah thought that Emma wanted a medical break for strategic reasons not being aware that is was simply mandatory.

Congratulations Emma brilliant US Open win, congrats also to Fernandez on her run to the final and her effort in the final. Didn't agree at all with the argument about the medical time out when it was completely within the rules. Like the commentator said don't start acting like a teenager now, so that marred the ending a bit but didn't take away from Raducanu's amazing performances from Qualifiers to US Open Champion. I agree that the timeout was completely legitimate but you can't be too upset with a passionate player, who has just come through a taxing run against 3 of the top five seeds, for being a little wrapped up in the moment. Incredible tournament from both players

I saw 6 times this match, but every time I feel emotions about everything what was on the court in that day, All that fight for every point and the last serve, that Ace and Emma's smile and joy was just great.Was teenagers final, but they play like a Pro, in speed and aggressive. Both of them need to work harder, Leyla serve need a lot of improvement and Emma backhand and forehand precision, but overall her game is beautiful.She's an athletic and very strong mentality, at this level even a great champions can make a lot of mistakes. Anyway ,she set a high standard, and her way is so impressive, winning all matches at US Open without dropping a single set , she make history in tennis. I hope she will choose wisely her next coach, she need someone with international experience in tennis. I wish her at next Grand Slam to say : Ups I did it again !

Every one greatly complimented Emma for her spectacular win, except for commentator CHRIS EVERT, who clearly was favoring Ms. Fernandez over the champion. Very unprofessional of her indeed. She does not qualify to be a moderator, and should be replaced!! Both Mary Carillo & Luke Jenson were in awe of Emma's unbelievable performance during and after the final championship match & proudly expressed so during the broadcast! Much thanks to these two sportscasters for their unbiased views!
Chris Evert is of course entitled to have her own opinion, on the other hand as a commentator she's also expected to be rather neutral especially when both players are non-American. It's a difficult to determine where the boundary between personal opinion and neural comment lies.

LF convinced me, what I was suspecting already, that her IQ is way below Emma's and that's why I knew Emma would win. I would have been ashamed to comment against referee's decision given there were 100s of cameras on her and everyone would see she was wrong. Also I didn't like her family' reactions, gosh there's something wrong with these people

Finally get to see the whole match. Emma hits hard and precise. I thought her backhand was powerful but her forehand is also pretty powerful as well. I would like to see the full match of her semi and quarterfinal and the round of 16.
Both Emma and Leylah don't hit that hard but they are precise and gutsy. If this US Open was not a fluke from either Emma or Leylah, they will be picking up many trophies in the future.

Great match spoiled slightly by the sound balance between the commentary and the crowd noise. It wasn't possible to hear the former, at times, due to the excessive volume of the latter. Those sound levels should've been sorted out.

Raducanu is simply head and shoulders above Fernandez in mindset, behaviour and skill. This really was not a close final, and I had the feeling mentally Emma could step it up if it was required.
