I’m Italian and I was 11 years old during this World Cup. Of course, I cheered for my country when we won, but a part of me was also disappointed when we defeated Brazil. They were such a joy to watch.
They were the definition of the beautiful game. Did not win the WC but won hearts all around the world. They will live on in the memory.
In a parallel universe where everything is fair and just and beautiful and pure, Brazil won the world cup that year. Sorry Italy but this was the team of the tournament.

82 Brazil had the most vicious midfield of all time. Attacking yet graceful and beautiful. Socrates, Zico, Falcao, Careca ...the talent they had was inhuman.
Careca did not participate in the 1982 World Cup.
And Careca was a striker. Rest yes.

They weren't. Brazil in 1982 had a shocking goalkeeper, a shocking defence and a shocking attack. They were only good in midfield.

Although I'm Italian, I have to admit that this Brazilian team was probably the best national team ever to have played the World Cup, probably there with the Hungary of 1954 and both teams didn't win.

Looking back on it, Brazil in 1982 were not really a team - only a brilliant midfield - probably the best in World Cup history. To emphasise this point, in the match against Italy, Serginho and Eder were non-existent and their defence was cut apart nearly every time the Italians counter attacked. Of their four midfielders - Cerezo, Socrates, Zico and Falcao - Zico clearly did not like playing right up and being tightly marked by Gentile and little was seen of him. The other three though were quite superb and Brazil went out paying real old-fashioned football.
@@gunternetzer9621a good analysis but Cerezo was shocking against Italy and his mistakes led to the 2nd and 3rd goals for Italy.

'most beautiful team ever', 100% agree... bunch of centrefold hunks the lot of 'em - especially Socrates, (phwoar). Shame about the football though, sunday league standard at best, most of them would struggle to make the first team at Kettering Town FC

They are legend really. However defence was not adequate that days. Defence team doesn't press until rival comes to second area and only 2 player stays on penalty area.

Brasil did not have a top class centre forward. Just think about someone like Careca, Romario or even Ronaldo playing number 9 in this team together with Junior, Cerezo, Falcao, Socrates, Zico and Eder instead of Serginho........
I guess you're right albeit I was told by a brazilian guy that actually Santana had his own beliefs and made his choices not only in order to mere technical skill.He couldn't stand some players' behaviors and attitudes,eventhough a few were known to be more talented than Serginho.
Brazil squad did have a top centre forward called Reinaldo the king Atletico MG but he was pulled out for being involved in domestic politcs issues against dictorship in 80s.
