Leveraging social media has been a cornerstone in establishing my career, enabling me to showcase my art and engage with a global audience. However, the tightening grip of content guidelines across social media networks has led to continual censorship of my artworks. As upsetting as it is for me to lose connection with so many people who previously enjoyed my work, there is a much more ominous repercussion to artworks being censored across social media by artificial intelligence. In this discussion with Olga Speaks, we delve into the potential dangers of excessive censorship and its effect on artists and society.

I appreciate that your video that brings censorship into focus in a very rational way.
I'm really divided on the topic of nudity/sexualized images on social platforms. Jono, I love your work. I find it tasteful without being sexually explicit. As a female, I do resent seeing sexualized images of women, especially those of scantly clad females with big boobs bursting out of their clothing and carrying weapons, or images that border on or actually are porn/erotica. Personally, I don't want to see porn, erotica and sexualized women (with or without weapons) in my social media feeds, so I do appreciate that social media platforms attempt to filter out these kinds of images. On the other hand, I've had social media platforms delete images I've saved from Medieval manuscripts, Egon Schiele, vintage photos of indigenous peoples, etc.
I understand that platforms need to be consistent with regard to "sexual" content and I agree that nudity does NOT = "sexual". I acknowledge that the algorithms cater to the strictest definitions of "inappropriate" in order to appease those with more restrictive definitions of "inappropriate" than yours or mine. Thank you for this conversation. You have my sympathy for being caught in the dilemma of the algorithms that restrict your work from being seen.

I sketched nude form and figures very very young, so I have been always aware of how this can be viewed and an artist can be treated.
I had issues in school and home on what was was appropriate and I ignored them with consequence.
So this is something I'm very familiar with in daily life, history, and now. I was worried when I saw a few years ago that they had to censor Tarot because of the art work on the rider Waite decks
I began to think abt the issues that would arise with CZcams and other artists. I'm sad to see I was right.
    A shame!
So glad you spoke about this issue so eloquently.
I am angered that your work is censored it brings me so much inspiration ✨️

    Thanks for your great video.
I’m only a hobbyist artist but like to make figure drawings. I faced often the same censorship as you mention.
Even harmless pieces were removed and I was banned from an online forum for posting artistic figure drawings and a condom drawing in comic style (just the condom, nothing else).
On another forum I was bullied out by prude people for posting harmless figure drawings as well.
Currently I only post on DeviantArt anymore and even there it is required to put a mature tag on anything that only show a female nipple. No chance to post a study from an ancient masterpiece like Michelangelo’s David without a mature tag or you risk being banned.
But picture and publish violence and gore is widely accepted
It’s just crazy how many people have a dark prude medieval mindset, not only Islamic fundamentalists but also a lot of US Christian people.
Europe with a modern liberal mindset seems to be an exception and is surrounded by medieval mindsets.
The human form and nudity is nothing to be ashamed and nothing to be hidden even from kids,
but many people are such indoctrinated by religion and stereotypes that they do not understand that sexual content and nudity are two different things.
At least I tried to raise my son not being ashamed from nudity from the beginning on and I think I succeeded.
Unfortunately it seems all bigger social media are controlled by prude people with a crude medieval religious mindset.
So I feel with you and agree.

Nudity in art isn’t a new concept as you correctly say, but censorship to this degree is relatively new in terms of how it’s being done.
Firstly, being offended by nudity doesn’t mean that the subject is inherently offensive. That being the case, anything flagged to social media moderators should be judged in context. The offence felt by an individual is subjective and therefore, in my opinion, quite irrelevant.
The biggest issue is definitely how an algorithm is programmed to assess an image. If it is told to censor anything which displays genitalia for example, then it will do so blindly and without considering nuance or context.
If algorithms cannot tell the difference between pornography and nude artwork, then how many great examples of art will be permanently hidden from us? There will never be enough human moderators in social media to cope, so what’s the answer?
Moderation by AI, if utilised properly could be the answer though. As it has the capacity to learn and evolve its “thinking”, given enough examples it could be a better judge than algorithms.

Yes especially since sites like only fans are prostitution and exist only to sell sex while nudity in art is typically not intended to entice sexually but to explore form. These so called censors are working from the idea that any exposed skin MUST be intended as an enticement to perversion and nothing else. People who censor and create ways to censor are usually the people that are finding this type of art sexual and in a vain attempt to keep anyone from learning their horrible secret, attempt to hide it from everyone or the rest of us will realize that only the censors at the ones finding this the most enticing

I can't tell you in exact words the difference between nudity vs erotic artwork, but you know it when you see it. Art evokes a lot of emotion and I think it's hard to put either category within strict parameters. It makes it tricky to weed out the bad from the good. But a broad-stroke banning of nudity as if the human form is inherently sinful is not the best approach. Nudity+action+evocation for sexual intent I think is the simplest way to discern if something is erotic "on paper". But I'm sure there's some tongue-in-cheek way eros artists can skirt this, or puritans can bend it.
I am a Christian and actively practice my faith and I still hear "why can't you draw something christian?" Or "why do they have to be naked". Gee, I don't know. Maybe I'm celebrating the height of God's creation by studying the human form.
I suppose no good artist can create a work without there being a proper controversy. The goal is to evoke a response after all.

Instagram, like almost all online social media platforms, were designed with capitalism in mind, not creation, and definitely not art. Capitalism is antithetical to art, and we are seeing that more and more as technology has allowed our consumption to be in our faces 24/7. Art is no longer about experiences or feelings, it's about ownership and exploitation (see: NFTs & AI generated media). As much as I dislike the art gallery industry, there is a level of elevation that happens when you exhibit your work, as opposed to sending it off on a conveyor belt to an audience who are largely uninterested in sitting with art. Especially, when they can scroll away so quickly and see something new. As much as I like the internet, and all the positives it can reign in, it's however been my experience that the internet has harmed humanity more than it helped.

If I were you, I’d start investing time and money into creating a new platform for artists to post their work free from censorship, and not just you, get other big name artists involved as well! This is only going to get worse so let’s get ahead of the curve.

This is ridiculous, I can't see legitimate art portraying the human form online but yet I'm bombarded with naked bodies in a manner that is anything but art. It's fair to say the 'system' may be well intended but it's broken, it doesn't work, it censors genuine art while allowing through images it should be censoring and this generates huge income for the social media companies. This is the crux of the argument, it's not in their interest to censor anything but they can claim they're trying and making mistakes with nudity in art.

Are you an Art critic or an Artiste?
A Book burner or a Novelist?
A Health and Safety officer or a Risk taker?
Because we are all a little bit of all a lot of the time,
And a lot of one leaned, for some time.
But that is the nature of Space
And that is the nature of Time.
    Time turns in to space
And Space turns in to Time
    Would you like a lemon?
    …with your lime?
Sometimes a lot of space, but not much time
    Sometimes so much Space,
How do I make it rhyme?
No plan of action survives first contact.
    So Patience!, Dear Watson!,
    We all need our homes,
Believe me I try not be too shocking,
    With my Sherlocking,
    But!
    . . .! ! !,
    I buried a bone,
    A bit like a dog.
    No murder commited,
    Maybe ‘‘twas a log,
    I’m burying the hatchet,
    And no,
    I’m not batshit.
But the lad I once was,
    Is now in lad lane.
A link of a link of a glorious chain.
    No Pem,
    Brook my saddle,
    My Horse had a rattle,
And all that is lieft is to say’
    Is me fein

Only humans have made the human body derogatory. Art is an extension & an expression of life, a real human emotion. It is the imagery of our subconscious, that allows us to bring to life a consciousness for others to enjoy, become inspired or provoke thought, it is the conscious self that creates evolution of humanity, furthering newer generations to create expressions of humanity-elevating a higher evolution of man.
So should we now lock the doors of museums, libraries; void of history, eliminate what could be deemed provocative words from the dictionary, ban thought, research, the advancement of life, because a few people have censored the human body, mind & ideals(spirit) which is our lifeline on Earth?! Fk NO!

So what are we going to do about this? If we all stopped watching, commenting , and publishing on CZcams for let’s say 10 days, in order to protest against this stupid bigotry, then maybe the people at Meta would react in a sense that feels normal to normally intelligent people. Each and every one of us is responsible for this censorship by just allowing them to do so.

    But they are right !
Don't you got anything else than nudity ?
When artist went out of ideas - nudity cames on display !
So do lost people, when they useless even for themself - they end up on the streets, nude !
So basicly if you got a One Hit Wonder Picture & nothing else - you automaticly end up with the nudity !
It's a natural rule BUT MOST IMPORTANT it shows the meaningless & unsignificy of the so called "artist" !

@@xmaryHXCx he's got a point. Often enough artists create art by utilizing nudity. There is never one single motivation, but he is correct to state that nudity is a vehicle. Often to transport an idea. It is a powerful vehicle because seeing human figures creates closeness in our imagination and so we can better identify with the picture.
It is just harder to identify with a tree than with a nude person.

When you press one button and a big black box throws a fully functioning car at you, who created the car?
Was it you who demanded the car?
Was it the black box, who assembled the car?
Was it the software developers, who imagined abstract ideas into a wicked complex algorithm?
Was it the manufacturers who supplied the black box with all the parts?
Was it the people who in their chaotic heads combined lose ideas into existence?
Just like the mass produced car is just a product, the things that AI presents us with also is nothing more than just a product, but not art.
Art comes into existence because it has an urge to free and expose it self. GPT doesn't proceduce content beause if feels like it must, but rather because you commanded it.
Besides, it is a marketing lie to call it "AI" when in fact it is "machine learning". Though, even "machine learning" is a lazy and incorrect word for what it really is. It is in fact the expansion a statistical model though complex mathematical algorithm. But that doesn't sound sexy, and thus marketing decided to call it AI.

@@Herr_Vorragender Yes exactly. It's really the theft and amalgamation of other people's art captured through programming. You certainly can't steal the IP of a corporation but they can sure steal from us. In any case our lives our being upended by machines, or people acting like machines: 'just following procedure', 'sorry but that's the policy I need to follow'.
