This is a journey into the microscopic world, we usually think about the Universe as planets, space and galaxies but so much of the scale of the Universe is in the world of the small. I've always wanted to understand it better, so I've spent the last few months trying to make this Micro Universe not just accessible but something that can be remembered.

Otherwise thanks forthe support everyone, that support has meant I've taken the leap to making these full time, I couldn't have achieved that without all the kind words, views, shares, subscribes and Patrons. It also means the videos should start coming a little more regularly now which I'm very happy about.
I hope you enjoyed this little adventure into a different kind of cosmos, as mentioned I'll be back in space again in the next video which I'm looking forward to!

@EpicSpaceman Glad you're back, ES!
I love your content
You revolutionised content creation! Man, this gonna take the science communication thing to the next level!! Astonished by your hard work!!!
I love your work, a perfect mix of amazing facts and entertaining visuals. You mentioned Blake's poem. If I may, I'd like to share a poem with you of my own, which I think will very much appeal to your interests. How do I get in touch?

Haha! The premise behind that was so crazy, they banished the most dangerous guy in the universe to the quantum world and the location they chose was? … Seemingly the floor of Hank Pym’s lab 😂 literally the only place in the Universe not to do that
@EpicSpaceman It doesn't really make any sense because of the time it would take for Pym's wife to reach the floor after being already so far away. But I guess they just had to ignore logic to fit the plot.

I don't know much about this, but I'm sure animating all this his such a hard work and takes very long. This isn't only a scientist, this is a hardworking animator!
He started using Blender around the same time I did, only he got really, really good at it, and I quit because it's hard.
He's a photographer with a passion for science!
Love these videos man. Wish he’d make more and more
Blender, After Effects, Editing, Sound Design, if he made it all himself from scratch, man put a lot of effort in.
I love his videos! I’m about to chip in a lil to him since the videos he makes are fascinating.
I like how there’s always space between everything.
So much space!
They used to say “Nature abhors emptiness”, but in reality, most of the nature is empty!! If fact >99.99% is empty!!!
the very atoms that make us are made up of mostly empty space! its insane to think about that even the most solid objects technically have tons of space but for me makes it more understandable thinking about the crush of black holes and neutron stars...putting the mass of Mt. Everest in the space of a table spoon!
@117swordsmen for Mt everest, even smaller then that. WAY smaller.
@117swordsmen
I am not sure how accurate this comparison is, but it remember being told in school that a hydrogen atom for example, is equivalent to a football pitch with football in centre representing nucleus and a pea circling the parameter.
In any case (accurate or not), it does illustrate the vast amount of space between atoms. I have often thought, that somewhere within this scale is an explanation for where dark matter/energy is and why it does appear to interact with what we see or can understand
He's not kidding. I work with DNA on a daily basis and the numbers we use still makes my head spin. We're typically targeting 50 nanograms of DNA per microliter of water and only use 4 microliters as our input volume for microarray experiments. When performing sequencing, however, we go even further and get down to 20 picograms per microliter of water. Picograms!
if you work with dna maybe you can answer one thing: when he counts he says a bacterium is 1million times smaller than us, but that serms WAAY to big considering we habe billions of cells
@@giulio7918 I thought the exact same thing. I'm wondering if he means a million times smaller based on total length and not volume. Kinda like the Earth is about 100 times smaller than the Sun based on diameter, but 1.3 million times smaller based on total volume.
@@giulio7918 he was showing difference in size not volume. As your size decreases, your volume decreases at a much faster rate. A mathematician could probably tell you this rate
He started with big dreams, but they got smaller every 21 seconds!
Haha! It’s like when I try and play sport nowadays
its poetic
🤣🤣
That actually is poetic. It speaks to the life of mankind. We see a star in the distance, aim toward it, and as we walk toward it, notice were slightly off and adjust slightly. Now of course, we're VERY off, but we grow wiser with each turn and realize how far off we are. But in every turn is a star.
That's deep❤

Haha thank you, that’s some commitment to positivity there, very much appreciated!
It deserves way better than Netflix...really, amazing!! 👏🏻
That's BBC David Attenborough kinda documentary right there
I know it's a compliment, but Netflix is walled in for those who pay, and they would pay him some amount of money. BBC would be the same. Not only that but they'd likely want all episodes to be the same length to conform not to the subject, but to how long they want them to be. CZcams lets creators access everyone (even those who don't have funds or don't want subscription services), and depending on their own number of viewers (although it might be very rare) and patrons, they can potentially even earn more than putting it on a paid service. Thus, at least until/unless CZcams changes its model (it is scheming to get as much money as possible, like the other corporations), this is the best place these documentaries could be. Just because people have to pay to watch things doesn't make that service better. So I understand that's a compliment, but I also think that you need to not respect paid services more than free ones.
Netflix is woke gar age anyway.

Now that I think about it the camera trick does make a lot of sense. If you could fly a drone into space, flying out far enough to see the whole solar system would take an exceptionally long time
Just out to Neptune is like 10^13m so it would take much longer than 30 years as that was just 10 steps not 13, I definitely haven’t checked this but my guess is if it were going at 45mph like my one it would be like 30,000 years give or take an order of magnitude. The solar system is much bigger than most of us expect it to be.

I'm so glad he brought that up. I literally never realized that the camera is firing out like a rocket! it is somewhat deceiving to our perception.
As I was watching this I had similar thoughts. Mine were, “I’m sending this to each of my five twenty-something year old kids to show their children, telling them, ‘This is the single most educational video I’ve seen - ever.’” (And I’ve watched literally thousands over the last ten years.)
This is the first video of yours that I've ever seen, but my God, I'm subscribing instantly. It's very reminiscent of Carl Sagan and Cosmos, and I can think of no higher compliment.

THIS is why CZcams exists. Truly epic, brother. The worlds within worlds within worlds. Fascinating! Thank you for this!
The real zoomout finally made it click for me in order to visualize the actual scale. Brought a tear to my eye. 30 years! Thanks so much man.
It's like the other direction of scale, i.e., to imagine a space journey to the edges of our solar system. The first part, leaving Earth, seems spectacular, as we can observe the growing distance from our home planet as a quickly changing scenery. But, after some time, that becomes boring, as we see that distance increasing ever so slowly. It takes forever to approach Jupiter and then Saturn, while we still can see Earth as a shrinking disk. Shrinking on an immeasurable rate.
An animation would perform the same trick with the accelerated speed, skipping the boring parts of the journey, where the perspective changes ever so slowly.
When he said 30 I was expecting him to say hours.... then he said years, I said wow.
Mr. Epic makes his videos without a team. It may take longer, but the wait is like waiting for a new season of a favorite show. You know it'll be worth it. I'm glad to see the audience numbers climbing rapidly - cudos, well deserved!

If CZcams had awards for beautiful and very informative videos, you would win. You opened my eyes to the world of the very, very small. Looking forward to your next video.
That was exactly the poem I was thinking of. I knew it was the same one as soon as you said William Blake. The meaning goes way beyond this video, but it’s not possible to make a video that could do it justice. You can only scratch the surface, as you did such a fantastic job with this video.
I really enjoyed this. Thank you!
You’re very much welcome, glad you enjoyed!
"It would take 30 ..."
me: "minutes? yeah, that would be a long video"
ES: "... years"
me: "..."
Another way to think about it: if it takes 10 seconds to zoom out from atom -> DNA, which is slightly slower than in the video, but makes the math clean, then it'll be...
100 seconds (1 minute 40 seconds) to go from DNA -> bad virus
1,000 seconds (16 minutes 40 seconds) to go from bad virus -> good virus
10,000 seconds (2 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from good virus -> bacteria
100,000 seconds (1 day, 3 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from bacteria -> red blood cell
1,000,000 seconds (11 days, 13 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from red blood cell -> tardigrade
10,000,000 seconds (115 days, 17 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from tardigrade -> edge of a coin
100,000,000 seconds (3 years, 62 days, 9 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from edge of a coin -> coin
1,000,000,000 seconds (31 years, 259 days, 1 hour, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from coin -> banana
And then more than another *three hundred* years to go from banana -> human. If you were to keep going, assuming a six-foot-tall human, it would take over ten billion years to get to the scale of Earth, a relatively small single planet in the vastness of the universe (and halfway there the Earth will have been incinerated by the Sun's supernova anyway). Pretty wild stuff.
@@DdavidoffC Great explanation! Thanks for putting in the effort with this comment! 👍
@@DdavidoffC Great explanation, but only one mistake: the Sun will not end as a supernova (not even a nova), because of its small mass. It will reach the size of a Red Giant, swallowing the Earth, and then a white dwarf.
@@fisicartucr6337 Which is great because as a white dwarf it will probably outlive most of the universe itself.

Those lines of that poem resonated with me. It really is amazing how small yet vast our universe truly is. I love watching shows about the universe as it put things in perspective that we are literally just a blip in this massively massively massive huge incomprehensible space we exist in. It truly blows my mind. This is just one fact I can't wrap my mind around that there are literally more planets in the universe than grains of sand on all of earth !!! 🤯🤯 Let this sink in , truly amazing and awe inspiring.
Indeed! I don’t think it’s possible to comprehend it all, we can only catch a glimpse of the scale and wonder both above us and below us
This is the only guy I’ve seen who makes things so easy to understand and I love it no one else does it like you man love the vids
You just keep living up to your username! Another epic video! Thank you sir
Haha, thank you! Always trying to do the wonderful stuff out there justice
Marvelous indeed. Every second of it remained interesting and compelling. And yes, light will not behave similarly to our human scale experience anymore, due to the wavelength of visible light. So, depicting small objects, as if they were large, is an artistic twist, needed to retain the viewer's focus on the essence of scale. Somehow, that is similar to the way scientists twist the colours of deep space pictures from planetary nebulae. The colours are not as the human eye would have seen it, but, the purpose of such pictures is to enhance the visualisation of such objects, using camera and filter technology to discern different cloud materials, so as to add to scientific understanding, as well as to the sheer awe and wonder of it all.
no one ever told me that zooming out at camera speed from atom to human scale takes 30 years to complete that's even more mind-blowing to know than reading quantum mechanics or even black hole
never used to see the scale of things in this manner, really great content sir keep up the great work, you really are a gem in the Sea of CZcamsrs
Thank you for specifically going over that exponential camera movement business, I’ve always noticed that issue & have tried to point it out to peers before but never heard it put into words properly. We take these leaps between scale for granted but it really is a lot to fully wrap your mind around, appreciate that you took the time to elaborate on it & put it into perspective. The universe & even our own human bodies are so incomprehensibly gigantic yet small/detailed simultaneously depending on how you look at it, it’s amazing we’ve been able to zoom out/in as much as we’ve been able to with technology. Excellent science communication content, entertaining and educational for all ages, looking forward to the next one!
Beautifull. Thank you for taking us on another journey 🫶💛

I am in tears bro, You did an amazing job explaining and creating this video about The Micro Universe
What an amazing video. I'd love to see a behind-the-scenes on it.
Its hard to imagine that as infinite space might be, the micro cosmos is just as infinite. Atoms, which are the smallest thing we can see, are made up of other particles that are made of other smaller particles etc etc. It's actually kind of terrifying that the microscopic cosmos might go on forever in theory.
There is a theoretical limit, the planck scale. But I don't think anyone can actually prove that, since it's many orders of magnitude below anything we can measure.
@@larion2336 right now yes it is a theoretical limit. but maybe in the future we could see beyond that and unlock/access lower dimensions or higher. what if below us was a full pledge universe, and same above us. infinity in both sides.
@@larion2336 I think its more a limit of our physics understanding, not a real limit.
@@carl-os4603 hence why it is theoretical
Infinite all the way up, infinite all the way down
that twist at the end blows my mind...incredible

Wow, it was a really great video! I have not seen such quality content in a long time, especially that level of animation and also about linear and exponential scale.
This was fantastic! Thanks @ Epic Spaceman ❤😊
Fun fact, if you go the other way, zooming in at a linear speed? Let's give ourselves 10 seconds.
Let's say that it takes 9 seconds to zoom down to the size of a banana.
Then for the next second, you see a incomprehensible blur before you just see an atom.
It goes Human, banana, instant blur.
10 minutes? Sure. 9 minutes to zoom in on a banana, 54 seconds to get to the coin, and then incomprehensible blur.
😂
I was hoping he would set the speed to "level 5" so we could see both the blur and the slo-mo, but going to the extreme of a 30 year zoom out is certainly more dramatic😊
I would watch the ten hours though, but really paying attention to the last hour lol
This is a delightful and visually stunning video with much useful information about how to view scale! For many years, I've used scale examples to help folks understand how terribly wrong the usual portrayals of atoms are, focusing in particular on how in an atom the size of a football stadium, the nucleus would be the size of a large grain of sand. The electrons shown moving around reflect an even greater reality distortion, with all testable versions of how electrons appear to an outside probe giving a result far more like the electron clouds of chemistry than the point-like particles physics prefers.
I will add one small suggestion: Beware of the danger of false endings. That's when the description seems to enter an ending phase that makes the viewer think the video is almost over when it is not. Viewers are willing to stay for longer videos but need clarification if they feel the video is about to end midway, such as when you reach the hydrogen atom. At that point, I recall becoming deeply puzzled at what would come next. A short bit of preface up front that explicitly names the parts of your video would help, e.g., the scaling journey, the speed journey, and infinity in your hand.
Thank you! This was thoughtfully written and much appreciated, good advice on the pacing and false ending too, I could have done a better job there when I wrote the script. I think originally actually I made it into different parts but somewhere along the line lost that.Your football stadium metaphor is remarkable because it’s almost exactly the same as one I’ve written a script for, I’ll definitely be exploring that world of empty atoms soon. Bill Bryson I think described it as flies in a Cathedral which blew me away. Thanks again for the kind words!
