The process of planning my drawings has become more and more complicated over the years. I never thought that id spend more time planning one of these drawings than it takes to actually draw them. Bing asked to share where I get my drawing references is a common question, I'm sorry that I cant but I'm also proud of the reason. I hope this video helps shed some light on why. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions about the process, Im happy to try and help where I can.

Yeah, when the reference photos become "i took them myself" it becomes kind of a trade secret and part of the artwork itself. This is already sharing a lot hahahaha
Mystery is part of the magic ✨ thank you for sharing but don’t feel pressured to share parts of yourself you want to keep private. The ones who get it will understand 💓 everything you make is so beautiful 😊
Love this, i totally agree. You've actually inspired me to do my own reference pictures. And the pictures on your patreon are wonderful and help me out in so many ways
To say that you do pencil drawings is the understatement of the century.
Bit like saying Mozart played the piano a bit, or Albert Einstein was ok at maths.
Technically, he does use pencils and he makes drawings with them. So... 🤷🏻♂️
No kidding!! LoL Well said! Jono is one of my favorite artists. ❤
@@JaGGeR-an understatement does not need to be false to understate what it is stating.
That statement really struck me too.
I'm shocked. Jono uploads two clips in one week. Wow... you deserve to be among the best artists in the world because you have a sophisticated and rare artistic mentality.
The things we are willing to do for art! The general population have no idea how much effort goes into one art piece. Personal reference photos are copyrighted. It is shocking that people can even think it is appropriate to ask for your personal reference photos.
Agree. I sat here wondering if I was the only one who found such requests a bit beyond the pale.
Love this video and all the inspiration it brings. I've always wanted to take my own reference photos but sometimes don't even know where to begin, so seeing this is definitely helping me to get more creative. much love Jono
Your approach of using multiple reference photos for full body drawings is quite insightful. It's common to use one wide shot for the overall body structure and additional close-up shots for intricate details like the face, hands, or any specific features you want to emphasize
Wow you really go through/to the extream dont you.
Love your work. 😊
I really love watching your creative process you are my inspiration.
To play is one of the most important parts of art, and this is one of it's ways. It's beautiful and crongrats for reaching this point in your career where you have those tools, toys and people to play with :D
Totally agree! Im super grateful that I get to spend most of my time doing this :)

Professional artist like an artwork
EXTRAORDINARILY INSIGHTFUL!!!
I love this. I feel like when it comes to painting it's easier to draw from a reference and I'm always perplexed at how people come up with some interesting perspectives and I'm curious if they all just have brains capable of knowing how light and shadow will fall on something or if they are using reference photos. This mirrors how my creative process is which in a way extends to other mediums as well and this also just shows the level of dedication from start to finish your work takes.
Incredible process insights. Very deeply appreciate the dedication to preparation. The work shows in the final products.
Ha ha I thought I was obsessive. You get the prize!☺
Ive actually started drawing one of your reference photos from patreon, the habd with the water flowing. Its been a lot of fun and great to finally get back into it. Thank you for inspiring me
Jono Please make a video Tutorial....how to draw a realistic rock
Jono Dry is my mentor.... ..... inspiration
Wow! Thank you for the insight! Well done! Very inspirational!
My art professor insists that our reference photos are ones that we've taken ourselves. Not allowed to download someone else's images from the internet.
Creating my own reference photos does add another layer of creativity. The composition is now mine and mine alone. The completed artwork is then so much more than just rendering someone else's vision.
Loved and got inspired by every bit of this video 😊
Eight billion, one hundred million of us remarkable creatures. You are can actually know, you are extraordinary among your kind. What elevates you to new heights is you chose to CREATE as a lifestyle. I feel love for someone a will perhaps never meet. I am happy we walk here during the same time. Happy Holidays to you and yours.
¡gran trabajo Jono! le pones el cuerpo a tu obra....
fantastic video, we are truly blessed ❤❤❤
So so beautiful.
Those reference pictures are part of the final picture, on some level, in my opinion.
Incredible! ❤
You are just super creative wow❤ from Zambia
Awesome ❤
UMLILO 👊🏿 that mind is deeper than we thought JAH GUARD 🙌🏿
I'm curious about the photos you use for the full body drawings. Do you use one reference photo, like a wide shot of the entire body or are there multiple close-up photos, like one for the head, torso, hands etc to get the tiny details? Maybe my camera doesn't have the resolution but if I tried to take a full body shot I would lose the detail in places like the eyelashes even if I cropped the photo in certain areas to enlarge them. My only solution would be to take one full body photo for a general reference and then take several close up photos for the tiny details
I really think that the best was to improve my art (apart from LOTS of drawing) is to improve my photography! My main subject is wildlife though, access to models can be tricky! I’m planning to upgrade my camera equipment and take a photography class, so that should help. I’ll also take a look at you Patreon - thank for this video!

Day 4 of asking
So if u want i would appreceate if if u made another hyper realistic eye tutorial not step by step they're a little confusing tbh no offense so another eye tutorial that would be sooooo good i really need it so much!🤞and more detailss...... so u know like the eye drawing "Honey" u know very detailed and like the 45 degree angle eye tutorial like them mixed together cuz u are en amazing artist and I dont see anyone Else that can do it like u with the details and the overall contrast i dont exepect anything because u know u are a big youtuber and idk why u would listen to me🖊✏️🖌 Hope u doin it though it would make me happy and a better artist.✏️✏️ like im a beginner u know.
Perhaps you have a book of reference photos you could put together and have published. I'd buy it.
00:00 🖼 Planning compositions is a huge part of the drawing process, often the most challenging.
00:44 🌳 Exploring elements in nature heavily influences artwork compositions, like "Waiting Under Stone."
01:12 🧘♂ Sitting in a Full Lotus position for extended periods was physically intense and led to injury during shoots, showcasing the dedication behind the serene mood in art.
01:51 🦌 Painful moments during shoots, like lying in a cradle of horns, contribute to capturing intricate details in the interaction between elements like horn and skin.
02:20 💉 Uncomfortable behind-the-scenes experiences, like pouring fake blood into eyes, create visually striking effects despite the discomfort.
02:48 📷 Earlier artworks had a shorter planning phase, but recent works demand more attention to detail, intensifying the planning process.
03:17 🤕 The artist uses self as a model due to reluctance to subject others to the physical discomfort experienced during shoots.
03:45 🖼 The reluctance to share reference photos stems from considering them an integral part of the artwork's creative process.
04:13 📸 Encouragement for artists to start taking their own reference photos, despite the initial difficulty and barriers.
04:41 🛠 Squarespace played a significant role in the artist's career by simplifying the process of showcasing work online without needing coding skills.
05:09 🛒 Squarespace offered utility-rich websites, online stores, and reliable support, pivotal for displaying artwork professionally.
05:23 📷 Some adjacent photos from shoots used for planning artworks are available on the artist's Patreon for subscribers, aiding in creating reference shots.
Jono I'm really surprised you just use 8b for your darkest shade. I really thought it's charcoal.
Save this idea for the far future but you might be able to compile your reference photos and some of the process into a book about your journey. Just my 2 cents.
Also, well done good sir, well done!
Which paper is used for such type of drawing?
This is the biggest struggles in realism. REFERENCE
This is epic
How do I locate your Patreon page. Thanks, Carmelo

The photographs are the most essential part of your artistic process, together with composition and, of course, the act of drawing itself. Asking you to share your reference images is like, I don't know, being invited for dinner at some people's house and requesting to take home all the food left, ramming into their fridge. It's just rude.
I think people who asked you this question did not spend time looking at your videos and website to really understand your work.
Y d need to b there for that long
I edge to your videos
Jono can you please try painting?
That's a real brick?
Jono is such an amazing artist! I wish though that he was more humble. He's super in love with himself and it shows.
Hey!
hi!
I actually want to (politely, hopefully!) disagree with you Jono. I don't think the barrier to entry is high. As my entry point, my phone, sunlight, and a mid-tone sheet have been good enough. Granted, my compositions are relatively simple (no models and no antlers 😂) but to me, those aren't entry-level either. Something about necessity and invention, I think. 😁

Gee...I would hope that you would *very deeply and carefully* research *_any_*_ substance_ before pouring it into your eyes!!!
The potential damage... which might occur _immediately,_ or possibly _weeks later,_ depending upon the properties of the substance... *_absolutely_* outweighs *ANY* benefit you might gain from the use of the resulting photo reference!
Frankly, as a visual artist, I am shocked that *you* of all people... that is to say, one who should surely understand the *_irreplaceable_* value of your eyes... without question, *the* _most important_ of *_all_* of your art creation tools, would so cavalierly put a substance which you do not have complete and absolute understanding of on your eyes!
Can you do video in every language, because in love your video but i don't undertend you😢😢
this is so interesting to see, never knew so much happens behind the actual drawing 🤌🏾
