வள்ளுவன் இளங்கோ கம்பன் வரிசையில் இளையராஜா ஐய்யன் தமிழர் வரலாற்றில் கல்லில் செதுக்கப்பட்ட சரித்திரம்.
Ilaiyaraja was the first Indian (nay, the first Asian) to compose a full symphony, and he wrote it in less than a month. He used vocals as well as music in the composition for effect, in the same spirit as Beethoven’s path-breaking An Die Freude (Ode to Joy) in the Ninth Symphony.
Thiruvasagam is a famous collection of Shiva hymns composed by the 8th century Tamil poet Manicka Vasagar, a sage who also was the court poet to Varaguna Varman II, the Pandya King who ruled from Madurai.
In 2005, Ilaiyaraja converted selections from Thiruvasagam into a six movement symphony-oratio with a full orchestra and a 120-voice chorus. Ilaiyaraja’s symphony Thiruvasagam has been performed by various orchestras, such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, and most notably, the Budapest Symphony Orchestra in Hungary with Laszlo Kovacs conducting.
There are raga-like modes and scales, as well as melodic turns suggestive of Indian vocal practice, in both instruments and voice. These are effortlessly combined with various forms of Western classical music, chorale and orchestral. East includes West, and vice versa.
Here is the second movement of the symphony, Polla Vinaiyen, performed by Lydian Nadhaswaram (who not only sings but takes the burden of most of the orchestra on his young shoulders), Varshan, & Amirthavarshini.
Ilaiyaraja contrasts solo voice and chorus, solo instrumentation with orchestra, in an imaginative musical development to reflect the essence of the poem: the Divine in contrast with the all-too-flawed human. Selected Tamil verses have been translated into English by the American lyricist, Stephen Schwartz:
