Adam, it's funny that you mention Hobi giving us the okeydoke, because NO ONE on this earth okeydokes their skills like Jung Hoseok. You guys don't know how right you are to call him the Goku of dance (tbh, he's the Goku of performance in general).
I think the only footage I know of where he's going entirely 100% full-throttle is the behind-the-scenes clip for the "Boy Meets Evil" music video, which is included in _2016 Memories._ The combo of high-difficulty choreo + high number of aerial/fall/roll moves + Hoseok's intense perfectionism meant that the hours and hours of retakes done at different speeds and on two different versions of the set eventually became painfully taxing. He could barely stand up and walk by the end of it. Crazy. (But he was the one who decided to keep going that long. And he was still smiling.)
That's the only time I've ever seen him anywhere near a state like that. Us Hobi fans often get bummed out because the choreo for his solos tends to only be medium difficulty, or because he doesn't get featured enough in general, and we wanna see him go Super Saiyan! Some people blame Big Hit... but no. It's him.
If you watch footage of the WINGS tour or either of the award shows where the song was performed, you'll see that the "Boy Meets Evil" dance either has the second half cut off of it or has the second half modified (you probably even noticed it in this intro video). iirc, he has never done a live performance of the full original choreo. If you watch compilations of his "Baepsae" dance breaks from the Love Yourself/LY: Speak Yourself tours and pay attention to dates and locations, you'll notice he only ever does a death drop on the last show at any given location. Choreo for "MAMA," "Just Dance," and "EGO" is all low to medium difficulty. His dancing on TV appearances is never remotely serious, just like Tae said. And honestly... in his Hope on the Street freestyles, he's really just chillin.
There are two main reasons for this IMO. The first one is less opinion and more a fact that we have seen borne out and discussed on camera: He is _extremely_ serious about avoiding injury, having overall good health, and maintaining a consistent level of energy throughout a performance-even if that performance is 3 hours long and you have to do it 3 days in a row. He is by faaar the best in the group at energy management and avoiding injury, and it's due to a combination of keeping his set as low-stress as possible, not letting passion/desire to overperform get the best of him, and dancing in his particular style.
The second one is more of an opinion. But... imo, it's just him being Goku. He's not a guy who shows off. He's just not a guy who wants to prove to anyone exactly how good he really is or anything like that, unless there's a specific reason for it. He absolutely does have a driving need within himself to be as perfect and as practiced as possible, and he has said multiple times that he is always trying to learn new things and gain more talent (he calls himself "greedy"). But it seems like he pursues those things more for his own confidence, joy, and pride than for the purpose of using them overtly on stage.

@MiekoNeko well, a catastrophe is a very, very bad thing, so I don't agree that it would be "catastrophic" per se if he went full-force. I just think he may not like the feeling of going full-tilt. and I definitely don't think he enjoys feeling as though he is about to run himself into the ground.
that's a mode performers like Jungkook and Jimin live for, _especially_ JK: exploding with everything they have during a performance and leaving it all on the stage. there are definitely advantages to this. in a group setting, it draws all eyes to you, it's visually spectacular, and your fans will always feel fully satisfied that you gave 110%. using Hoseok's method, a performer will rarely be the center of attention and, as you said, fans will often find themselves wishing for more.
but as I discussed in my OP, his method has its own advantages, and they're the kinds of things that are less about immediately gratifying the fans and more about maintaining absolute control over every aspect of himself and his performance. "control" is really the only word you need to remember when it comes to j-hope and dancing. it's at the center of everything he does; it's likely the core reason for every decision he makes.
"power" is also a very important word when it comes to dance. if you want to ask "why don't we see Hoseok's full power?," the answer, to me, is "because he prioritizes control." every dancer has some sort of boundary somewhere, and imo, Hobi's most obvious boundary (though it's one of choice) may also be his greatest skill. despite how loose and free his movements are (or seem) when freestyling, Hoseok as a dancer reminds me of the title of one of my favorite Goldfrapp songs: "Strict Machine."
one thought that may make you feel better: to me, one of the BIGGEST indicators of just how much power and skill Hoseok has _is_ how much control he keeps and how much energy he retains while dancing the way he does. I remind myself that even though he's not overtly using that power and skill in the choreo, he is covertly using it every time he makes it look so damn effortless.

This is very good statement. He frequently chides Jimin and Jungkook for dancing "all out" at performances and concerts (which you see on their shows). The says professionals dancers need to learn to conserve their energy. I'm sure he lives by that statement.

I think it was Son Sundeuk that said that Hoseok hasn't got like great body composition for stamina? or strength? (like forgive me I'm not fluent in korean so relying on translations) and that hoseok, dancing takes a lot out of him which is why he seems hyper obsessed with maintaining throughout. Because he talked about how after practice, how worn out Hoseok can be from it. wish I had the interview to link. But basically, he's amazing, and as much as we'd love for him to go all out, super saiyan, he is a human with limits, and I love that you can appreciate that. (especially concert choreo! because concerts are so intense, on top of touring, having too complex/high level choreo that is like, a mistake that could have long term consequences, like you said.

I think I read somewhere that Hobi said he always feels like he needs to sacrifice for the other members. Not because he's forcing himself to but I think because that's how much he loves them that he does not want to outshine them. I mean, as Namjoon and Jin said, Hobi is good at everything. He could easily grab every opportunity in BTS and do everything but instead he doesn't. For example, he paves way for others to have more lines in a song, he gives other members the opportunity to improve and showcase their skills and he helps them behind the scenes. All of what he does were behind the scenes and his sacrifices are also behind the scenes like, as ARMYs we don't usually know that Hobi did this, Hobi encouraged the other members to do this, or anything. It's really something to be proud of when I say that he's my ultimate bias but at the same time what saddens me is that, he's always giving people everything but what about himself? Maybe that's why BTS were meant to be together because I can also see that even though Hobi is sacrificing for them, the rest of the members never forgets how to thank him, how to give back to him and how to treasure him.

  • @DanielleLemon

I cannot WAIT for you guys to see him live. He was not in my bias list until I saw him perform in person. He really becomes the leader of BTS onstage, and you realize you are looking at a person who is BORN to perform. He’s amazing - an all-time great. Now he’s my bias lol. I’m told this phenomenon of immediately worshipping him once seeing him live is called “being Hoseoked.”

Idk if this is fax or nah, cuz like... I haven't actually met the dude (hopefully some day, tho!), But Hobi strikes me as the kind of person that dedicates 110% of his efforts into being _good_ at whatever it is he wants to do. He will work his ass off, practicing all the time, and paying no mind to if he's bad at it at first. He doesn't care if what people see is not the best he can do, as long as it's the best he can do then and there, he feels no shame for not being an expert, but will practise and practise and practise until he is. And once he's good? He doesn't feel like he has anything to prove. He doesn't show off, he doesn't feel the need to shine. When he has to do his best, he will do. He will give it his _all._ If the situation doesn't require he actually exercises his craft to the best of his ability, he's just going to have fun and not take it at all seriously.
That's honestly were I see his dedication to his art. He dances to communicate. There's feelings and emotions that manifest in every move, and to do that he's learned (and continues to learn) to be fluent in the language of dance, finding new ways to express himself through hard work and passion.

What strikes me about J Hope is how multi-dimensional he is. Compare his live performance of Tear with Ego for example. Then he turns around and harmonizes with JK in Save Me during the Tiny Desk concert. That’s not even touching on his dancing. He doesn’t say much about it but Suga and RM often comment about J Hopes contributions in writing and producing and he is often credited in the liner notes. While BTS wouldn’t be what it is without all of their unique talents, I admit he is my bias too. 😊

Yep he was part of a pretty famous crew called Neuron and he won quite a few competitions so he was pretty locally famous. And V was right in the beginning and even now he would only show a little popping on shows and not show how truly good he is, he never wants or wanted to outshine the others, hes just that great.

You can see him do it, for instance in CNS when Becky G is who you should be paying attention to. He holds space for those who are centered. He is the ultimate support for BTS. What an incredible man he is. I love all 7 of these guys more and more everyday

Yes he does love and enjoy dancing and the fact that he takes time during his time off to still dance on his own or even learn other styles of dancing is amazing cause that shows his passion and dedication to his craft. There was a time in early 2018 when hoseok would meet up with different dancers and practice their style and post it on #HopeOnTheStreet ‘s so if you haven't seen it here is a link that show J-hope loving dance and learning from other people who love to dance as well:

J-hope is an incredible dancer, as any professionally trained dancer will be able to tell. You don't have to be a fan to recognize the technical mastery this man exhibits. His move are precise, sharp, extremely well defined and highly compartmentalized. He possesses a natural talent for using lines and moves that best capture the rhythm and energy of the music no matter what the song is. Anyone (and I mean anyone) can nail choreography with professional guidance and a lot of practice - but gifted dancers like J-Hope can CREATE choreography to express how their minds/bodies feel about the music and share that with us to make us feel it too. Dancing is a language after all. He carries out BTS' choreography with outstanding precision and energy, making him a stand out in the group. So, it should come as no surprise that the group looks to him for dance inspiration. BTS LEGENDARY dance breaks were led by *"THE JUNG HOSEOK"* . He can do almost every style close to perfection, if not perfect.

One of my favorite things about the members is their ability to elicit real genuine emotion from people. Sometimes it’s easy to go through life feeling numb to everything around you and not even realize it. And then bts comes in and its like suddenly color vision. It’s something SPECIAL. For real

What's so interesting about Hobi is, that no one really knows his personality except for his family and the guys. Yes he is sunshine personified in front of cameras, but he's also the guy they all fear when they mess up a dance move and he's the guy who threw bananas at JK 😆 he once also said that this persona of his being all smiley and hopeful has become part of his real self cuz he has been acting like that so much over the years. But I do think his initial personality is way more laid back, earnest and serious. I think what we see on stage is more the real Hobi than off stage. Which is fascinating, cuz it usually is the other way around. But he is so in his element on stage, I do believe his real self comes out.

J-hope is my ultimate bias. As an adult fan of BTS I appreciate his complexity. He is a pure talent but also has a relentless work ethic and a generous heart which make this young man such an exceptional individual. He really is a young Michael in dance and song but perhaps something more because of how broad his contributions are: dance, singing, rap, choreo, songwriting, coaching, mentoring. It’s really something that instead of being selfish and rising to the highest heights as a soloist - and Hobi has the ability to reach superstardom as a a solo act - he pours energy into the group to make BTS better. Hobi is rarely in the spotlight with BTS. He’s back row at the side. But BTS would absolutely not be the top tier act it is without jhope’s hand in pretty much every aspect of the creative process. Most underrated member. Period.
