Sponsored by YOU! No seriously I couldn't do this without your support, so a big thanks to my patrons at www.patreon.com/elementalmaker. Please consider throwing a dime at this homeless guy you call ElementalMaker. Hes' homeless because he lives in his workshop. Not really. But Maybe.
@elementalMaker hey man, I'm not in usa so I'm your link I've been changing it to Co.uk HOWEVER sometimes when a search for something I've noticed it looses your part of the code in the address bar... How do I fix this?
I love how you Have got grenades just lying on your sideboard
I thought this was the main channel. Anyone got a link to the real main.
I have been watching this channel for a long time and always thought this was the main and only channel.. you need to promote that other channel more, what's the other channel name so i can go sub there too?
Vibra-Tite 442 Hydraulic Fast Cure Gel Sealant
A fast curing gel thread sealant which withstands temperatures up to 300°F (149°C).
Hand grenade casually chillin in the back
Not one but 3! LOL!
You never know when the covid19 zombies will come a knockin' at your door!
Hope he's got that SOT and stamps for them.
I have an antique one like that, thing is indestructible,well....almost. But the no rubber gasket, good machined metal on metal seal rocks.
Your upgrade is my old school, I'm 76.. This was patented here in Canada in the 60's and offered to your US manf. but nobody wanted to pay but opted till Presto Inc. let the patent run out recently. Now you know the rest of the story. Cheers from Canada.
Was just waiting for you to snap that drill bit.. Use an Allen wrench next time, they are tempered to be very springy and won't break or bend.
I that’s cool I did not know that
I love that someone else got as excited as I did when they understood how that weight works. Used my wife's modern model for the same application like two months ago.
Nice. There's nothing quite like a non standard part just fitting without issue.
7:52 "That may give us just the chance we need."
*14 seconds later*
8:06 "Apparently not."
The real joy of the All-American pressure relief weight system is listening to it hiss and jiggle as it works. Brings back memories of Mom and Granny canning veggies from their gardens.
I caught myself saying "fucking beautiful" when that thread fit perfectly. I kinda want one of these now, but i think my instapot should do for now.
Luckily things were SAE back then. I discovered my hand-me-down great aunt's PC orifice worked with 1/2" National Pipe Thread on the day I converted it into a still! In fact I didn't need anything else. I found all the parts in my basement junk to convert it. I put everything in my freezer into a cooler and distilled some of my old wine into spirits using the freezer as my source of cooling (also eliminated the danger of explosion in the process!) the vapors back into white lightning AKA high proof ethanol.
Best of all the whole thing converted back into innocent parts in seconds should any authorities come knocking at the door.😅
Holy shit man! You've hit the 100k subscriber mark! I'm still pounding away trying to hit 1k. LOL. Hopefully I'll start growing my audience again with much more frequent uploads. Congrats on your continued success man.
Yessir can't believe it myself! Thank you!
Welp you got your self one more sub me I just took a look and you look like a a awesome channel
@@kojira8090 Much appreciated! I've gotta get posting again real soon.
@@mwilson14 well I like your videos that I saw so yea
That means we are getting more mushroom content soon
That just brought me back to my youth. My mom’s Silex pressure cooker had that exact regulator on it. I have memories of hearing that hiss/rattle when she was using the pot. Hers only had a relief valve and that regulator...... except, shit, now I feel old........... I was like 10 (in 1967) when I remember it.
You tossed that pressure cooker up on the bench and my first thought was, "oh shit, he's finally lost it ...BATFE will be shooting his dog by dawn."
Always positive vibes with your content, thank you!
Awesome tutorial!! Exactly what I was looking for! I’m upgrading an A A. canner from the early 60’s.
What a great channel you've created man! Thank you very much You are a very entertaining and inspirering tinkerer. I will tell my friends to watch. Cheers.
Awesome. Thank you for doing this video. I’m looking forward to copying your modification on my own ancient, near identical pressure cooker.
good job brother! nothing better than breathing new life into a classic!
Lets upgrade the rapid destruction device!!! I would actually love to see a video on pressure canner failures. But I assume youtube wouldn't be a fan... or the NSA agent reading this comment now....
Man your quick!
My NSA agent is probs like wtf is this kid watching
Cool cant wait for the next vids.
Awesome man it looks perfect. I love vintage and antique everything haha my favorite folding chair fold up into a 2inch thick package and folds in a way I've never seen anywhere else. It's from the fifties made of wood in North Carolina. Love my old hand tools also.
Sweet vid man😎👍
I think those chairs are for funeral homes.
That's nice focus adjustment at 1:30 ish.... it gets great focus on the new part's threads and then "drifts" back to focus on the pot .... all nice and tidy.
As a mushroom farmer I appreciate this video so much as I'm looking into buying a vintage national 18 qt to restore and came across this in my research
Glad you found it useful. It's a great upgrade for both simplified useage and safety
I knew you had to have a pressure cooker. It's the mycologists best friend. I used to boil popcorn (standard popping corn) until it split. I would load in to mason jars with a needle-sized hole in the lid covered with 3M medical tape. I autoclaved those and they're FANTASTIC medium for inoculation. I ran a O3 generator in an old, clean bathroom, then inoculated jars through the 3M tape. Never lost one jar to anything more colorful than white mycelium.
You upgraded 90 year old tech with 50 year old tech! :)
Eventually we'll get to 21st century technology!
What’s your hurry? Lol!
Very nice! I have revamped several old pressure cookers although none probably as old as that one. That mirro-matic jiggler system is my favorite too. I add gauges to all my smaller cookers which don't usually have them. Mainly so I can set it just below "jiggle" and I don't have to listen to it. I have never seen a automatic reset blow off safety on one like you have. The ones I revamp all have a small rubber plug blow off. It can be replaced with a small pop up valve that is very useful and retains the blow off safety feature.
So you drill a hole in the lid so you can add a pressure gauge?
Great video and great replacement... all my pressure cookers have that style regulator .. they are the mirro models... I trust this better than my instant pot (you never know the pressure) also you learn to listen for that jiggle while your in another room, you’ll know if something’s wrong
That is so simple yet so effective, that's awesome!
Btw when working on cars here in Norway where the roads are salted many months a year.
Getting a steel bolt out of aluminium is 10 times more difficult than in steel when it is corroded since Aluminium expands very much and doesn't loosen up as easy as rust when heated.
So it is very often bolts just break and must be redrilled, and suspension bushings of aluminium corroding around bolts must be cut out and replace the whole thing to take wheel alignment.
I HATE mixed metals. Always cost me much more time and customers money
Works if it's lubed before assembly but no car manufacturer does that....
I like exploding hot water heaters, they make excellent short range rockets, LOL.
Oooh man love that toolbox..
Thank you! I have a video showing it and going through the tools, it was my wife's grandfather's.
This is the way we break the drill bit, break the drill bit, break the drill bit, this is the way we break the drill bit early in the morning 🙂
Surprising - usually the tighter the hole, the sooner you blow off. BTW, you can pour cold water on a pressure cooker and the pressure drops fast.
Does not apply when using a pot as a pressure canner to preserve foods. Natural cool down (pressure drop) time is included in the processing guidelines for safe food canning. Plus, risk of food being pushed from the jars when pressure outside of the jars decreases too quickly.
@@oldtimerlee8820 he didn't say that to be used as a standard process, it was more of an emergency procedure to prevent a possible explosion, but thanks for pointing out not to use the food if you use the emergency pressure reducing procedure! 😁
The new camera is very vivid, good enough I think 🤣
LOL I was just watching your aluminum oxide video when I got your notification
Cut a 3/4”-1” thick plate of lexan. Add a port for a vacuum gauge and for connection to a vacuum pump and you have an excellent vacuum chamber. Oh, I forgot your seal is the tapered thing between pot and lid. You need to add a seal. Route a slot in the lexan to accept an o-ring. A skiff of olive oily on the rim of the pot and then you got a serviceable vacuum chamber.
Good video resolution! 😎👍
Thank you! New camera
love it ! i have the same pot..
Very cool to know someone out there has the same pot! Any chance you know when yours was made?
My old mum had this ancient pressure cooker which had a cantilever weight on it which you could hang different weights for different pressures, had no safety either so had to be kept an eye on and it had not a dial gauge but this weird tube that rose like an old tyre pressure gauge with the bit o' metal that stuck out to show your pressure.
I work on commercial pressure cookers that operate at 12-17PSI. Teflon tape (high temp variety) works well on threaded connections.
i wonder if it had a leather handle on the 2 studs on the lid?
I think that should probably be installed so that it is level, not on an angle like that. Although i'm sure it doesn't need to be that precise. Never mind. Carry on, and keep up the good work. We are all counting on you.
You can get more of those old wrenches from the channel, "Hand Tool Rescue". He had them made in 3 different sizes.
1 wee
2 nae s' wee
3 freakin' _HUGE_
It's a good channel also!
The quality of HTR's wrenches is very high, I use mine often preferring it over my genuine King Dick's as it is bloody useful as an impromptu vice, thing to hold stuff for spraying or setting fire to, superb as a heat wick on lectronic boards and three years now of serious abuse has failed utterly to mark it, bend it or dent it even. Oh and I use mine as a socket key and I can whap it hard with a 4 pound club to shock stuff into moving and it just shrugs it off.
Sweet. Glad for this video. I recently picked one of these and the needle valve pin/screw was missing.
It's a really great upgrade. Makes it much safer to operate, and you don't have to babysit it as much to ensure pressure levels
@@ElementalMaker Good to here. I run 3 to 4 prestos for grain and sub at a time. My gorgeous antique needs to be put to work. lol Thanks again for this. So happy there's no retapping involved.
Every one of your videos has some fun easter eggs in the background. And the fact that you never mention or acknowledge them is both frustrating (I want to know more!!!!!) And one of the many reasons I keep coming back, lol.
Things like what is that thing? What does it do? Or why does he have grenades on his work bench?!? Video or project coming soon?
Yes the technology about the pressure system is indeed fascinating, but had to rewind a couple times as I kept getting all thrown off wondering about the grenades.
Lol
Keep being you man!
I don't have a pressure cooker so I haven't tried it yet. But I want to try to replicate bogwood using various woods bathed in red wine (or something else with lots of tannins) and heat and pressure, and see how long it takes to inject dark color into the wood at various temps and pressures. I don't even know if it's plausible, but it's an experiment.
Just good content
You do NOT know how refreshing it is to hear a CZcamsr casually cuss! Never thought I'd say something like that haha
Gray still plays does that
Ooooh! Nice practice grenades!
Loved the vid!
Just an FYI: is it possible to turn the gain on your mic down a little bit?
It will help with the clipping when there is loud noises like your 'P' and 'B' sound.
Fabulous! I have an old All American 21qt $30 from a yard sale-- not quite as old as yours, but it would work better if it had a new vent pipe and weight. Thanks!
Whoaw that camera quality !!
yeah, it was FAST to respond to the focusing requirements compared to some channels. Vivid looks like the way to go. Unfortunately my camera recently got stolen.
Your unit isn't supposed to be a pressure cooker I believe, rather it's an autoclave. The autoclave is supposed to run on a small amount of water and not boil dry, thus is designed not to vent once the set temp is reached. By replacing the manual vent with the weight, you also will be much more limited on your maximum working temperatures. You're blowing off before the designed minimum of 17psi for dry steam autoclaving (270F), let alone the maximum 22psi. Take a look at the manual for the All American 1941 for details.
Back in those days I believe the only difference between the pressure cookers and autoclaves was the pressure gauge they used and the emergency release spring. This one was set up for pressure canning at 5, 10, or 15 psi. But yes the old vent method certainly conserved water much more effeciently. But the trade off in ease of use and safety is worth it imo. I never use more than 15psi anyways
Pressure cookers and pressure canners have one thing in common: they allow the inner chamber to reach higher temperatures than boiled water.
The primary difference is you don’t generally use a pressure cooker for as long as you do a pressure canner (unless, maybe your pressure cooking a 10 lb roast). Also, you don’t release the pressure on a canner the way you do on a cooker.
A pressure canner can be used as an autoclave, as a steam autoclave is simply a large pressure canner (the real difference is the autoclave has steam pumped in under pressure, it doesn’t achieve the steam pressure by boiling water in the chamber). Again, once the pressure is reached (and that pressure’s attendant temperature) it must be held to ensure complete sterilization into the center of the “packs” in which the surgical instruments and what not are kept. There should be a couple inches of temperate sensitive tape to prove to the person who uses the pack that sterility was achieved.
Letting the canner run dry will just result in the contents of the canner burning. (A dry canner (or cooker) won’t explode. You need moisture in the chamber/pot to expand creating pressure.) If the weight stops jiggling even if your gauge shows the pressure of the weight, then your canner is dry and better short off the heat or you will(at best) burn the contents and at worst damage the pot.
As you were unwrapping the weight, my wife was sitting here telling the screen what it was and how it worked. Needless to say she walked off talking to the air about younger generation being uhh lower IQ than the old days.
I think we'd get along splendidly.
@@ElementalMaker Thanks she needed a good laugh.
The younger generation does have a lower IQ though. Their parents and schools fail them. Your wife is a smart woman.
I am not trying to sound Aragent but I am 14 years old and I was thinking that the system use different amounts of area to put the weight down with different forces But that might be because I enjoy working with things like this but what ever also sorry I am rating also I know I spelled lots of things wrong sorry I am bad at spelling
@@Friedbrain11 I agree I personally am really bored with school also I am not trying to sound aragont and sorry if I spelled things wrong
Can't beat it when sh!t works out the right way, you said it brother!!! :D
Wow I just came down to comment and noticed the 100k mark. Congrats!!!! Anyhow I was wondering would this work on one of those inductive stove tops that are supposed to be able to keep a very precise and steady heat? You might want to look into one of those. I've been thinking of getting one for melting sugar and potassium nitrate to make smoke bombs. Anyhow keep up the good work! *Edit* Bah I should always watch the whole video before commenting I forgot it's made out of aluminium. 😉
Where did you buy those hand grenades?
Very nice, now put a new guage on and use some jewler's compound and buff that wonderful old canner to a new look, and then bragg about it. 😄👍👍
Great job , Theire is nothing better when you take a chance buying a threaded item and it fits .
In general pressure cookers are not much different than any other pressure unit, as long as you follow the guide lines / clean the release valves and replace if suspect issue, check pot for cracks / replace gaskets if going hard or shrunken if pot has any , they can last a life time , if looked after,
We don`t have canning over here ,I think maybe one company but they don`t look as cool as over sea`s ones, you guys are massive on it I here,
They are to exspensive to ship to England its a shame,
colours are great in this video though...
Maybe use the old fitting, tap a new hole for it, and use it, along with some break lines as a source of high-pressure steam? Build a little Hero's Engine or what have you. Myself, for canning, I like my Kuhn-Rikon SS pressure cooker.
I was thinking of tapping another hole for it just for the ease of releasing pressure after it's done, but your steam idea is great! Time to make some activated charcoal!
Yeah!
always wear an oven mitt when messing with the weight after its come up to temp!!! the weight gets hot and the stream stream is nasty ask me how I know...
I have that exact same wrench in my garage at 7:30, could someone shed some light who made it.
Damn, you're so lucky your pot came with a needle valve. My Presto has a rocker and I want to change it to a needle valve!
I kept the needle valve in case I ever want to change it back, but the rocker is just so nice and simple, plus way safer. In curious, why don't you like the rocker?
@@ElementalMaker The rocker is definitely safer but noisier. I also *suspect* the needle valve is more efficient on both water and energy use because it's constantly bleeding off a steady amount of pressure unlike the rocker which is oscillating between holding pressure and letting off bursts. I only load sealed jars into my pressure cooker so the additional safety of the rocker isn't necessary.
Teflon tape would be better for that since it will seal and you'll never have trouble removing it due to corrosion should you need to. Ask for mil spec, it's much thicker and much much easier to work with.
I keep a box of leather scraps below my vise for pieces like this. put the leather around it and clamp onto it with a vise grips and you won't damage or even mar your old parts.
I'm not sure if what you did is really worth the work. If you have an Aldi's nearby I bought a brand new self contained AC plug in PC for only $45 and I love it. (I previously had my great aunt's old stovetop one like yours until the seal went) I use it at least weekly. I mention it because if you want a solution you can set and forget it really this is *the walk away solution.* It's digital, basically a instapot as all the buttons on it are the same as the instapot. I made scalloped potatoes and pork chops in it last night. The meat just melts in your mouth. I made a whole frozen turkey and whole skin on potatoes today in it. It has been my favorite kitchen tool for months now. It does max out at 99 minutes but you can stop that any time and restart it so you shouldn't have any trouble doing the mushroom stuff. You really can't beat the Aldi's deals.... I am waiting on them having the li ion drills on sale again. I bought one in 2015 and its been good but I wore out the bearings putting an oversized drain cleaner on it.
the threaded portion is tapered. No loctite teflon tape etc needed
Freedom pressure!
simplicity AND fail safe, like it
Funny how CZcams doesn’t send me any alerts when you upload a video. I have to actually check for them.
My grandmother and mother called it a "jiggler".
Where do you get your pineapples in winter?
What are the other 2 things sticking up on the lid?
One is a pressure gauge, and the other is an emergency pressure release just in case the pot is overpressurized
Is that steel or aluminum?
"Ingenious" This man is so humble. (Jk good job m8)
I had an idea take an argon cylinder, cut 5 inches off the bottom, weld a tight fitting sleeve in bottom portion protruding 1 inch, sweat one inch section into bottom of top part of tank with brazing rod, remove valve from tank and fill with 1 gallon of water plus one quart of gasoline, screw pipe plug into hole, stand upright pile wood around bottom light wood and RUN LIKE HELL. I love super heated steam explosions, the gasoline ignites at it's flash point and the extra heat produces the finish.
I would try growing artificial quartz. I've seen mentions of it being possible in a regular pressure cooker but no videos/tutorials
just casually has hand grenades in the backround
Nobody talks enough about 18650 batteries! my local tiny hardware stores just look at me funny when i show them my flashlight battery, and the big orange and blue stores are a waste of time. I cant wait until they start putting them in stuff like trail cams.
Wait till you see my next video, I just got one hell of a battery haul!
I wanna see more rocketry videos!
Working on some 👍
Wait you have another channel? What is the name of it?
This was originally intended for my backup channel ElementalMakerB, but I posted it here figuring it was more useful
Could not stop looking at that machinist tool chest!!!
new video is too blurry
I have a pressure pot for which I don't have the weight. I've already calculated about how heavy it should be to get the pressure I want, but seeing this thing may revamp my design.
It did not occur to me that changing the hole size is an option. In hindsight, it is obvious.
I could of course make more weights, but if I could encorporate the same thing into one, it would be better; fewer things to keep track of.
ever heard of Teflon food safe tape?
Are you planning on rearming those grenades?
Bloody Excellent video Sir Rob the Dangler. Over here in the UK, as is with you in the USA, we all love our Mushrooms!!! Many people don't realise that without Fungi we wouldn't exist. Fungi have been patiently waiting around for us to turn up for Billions of years, just to give us fun, nutrition and Beer.
You couldn't have Beer or wine without them. Imagine no Beer!! F*ck that Shit. Sir Rob, I love the three green ornaments in the background. 🇬🇧🇺🇸🍺🍄.
his laugh reminds me of hank hill lol
Noticed those hot little potatoes in the background. Couldn't help but smile
Old really functional Things Are wonderful. But I think you should consider replacing the old pressure gauge. Pretty damn close can be very unfortunate with a pressure canner.
All American strongly suggest to use teflon tape prior to screwing in the parts. The black knobs are??? Maybe handles kinda sorta??
Teflon would certainly work too. I just used the loctite which will seal the threads all the same. Yes the black knobs are handles to lift he hot lid.
You probably know by now but that 3 pressure canning weight has been around a LONG time. :-)
Dude the cold War was like yesterday 😁
nice hand grenades lol
Yo wtf I just realized its uncle bumble fuck when he went on the table
yooooo that threw me for a loop
I appreciate the comparison, but I am not AVE. We're on different sides of the continent
make firework shell or anything with pyro
Before I forget, thanks for not posting 60fps. Any channel that is even remotely related to either science or tech, for some reason unfathomable to me, think they need ultra high bit rate 60fps video, even if it is just their face in the video. Or even worse, capture of low res NTSC video signals from a NES or something.
ntsc at 60 kind of makes sense, you can avoid the fancy deinterlace algos
Think I’d use some non-hardening pipe dope on those threads.
Did he make more mushroom videos? They were fun.
My guess is that it gets tiring doing all the work to yield a pound of mushrooms (and they have really poor caloric value, like 100cal/lb). And chasing problems like contamination or bugs
But it looks like they taste good.
I don't think I did any more mushroom videos after this, you hit the nail on the head, they are a ton of work for very little reward and I got hit with trichoderma which started infecting just about every mushroom block I had. That being said I've really wanted to get back into it, it's a fun hobby
100k subs congrats .. face reveel ?😂
Hold on is that a hand grenade back there
0:20 what do you mean on the main channel? :D
Sorry this was originally intended to be on the backup channel, ElementalMakerB. I ended up putting it here since I figured more people could find that conical surface area pressure control trick useful.
