Mike never said he deserved to win. Only that Arnold didn't.
He was correct.
Mike Mentzer had the best mustache in bodybuilding. Period.
Vinni Jeyaa Banana Leaf Curry House hahahahhahahahah
I agree
Yeah a cool 70s pornstar moustache.
Ed Corney rocked a mean duster also.
@@lowriderskin yeah let's keep the likes to 69
Mike Mentzer was always underrated. He had a great physique.
Yes but he lacked the vaccum abs that Arnols had
Placing 4th was just ludicrous. He was harder than any one on that stage.
Bodybuilders today want to see who has the biggest sea turtle 🐢 in their abs.
Mike had the most ideal physique I’ve ever seen. Perfect proportions, symmetry and aesthetics
Mike was a very strong bodybuilder, also the only bodybuilder to score a perfect score in the mr universe contest. 300 out of 300 points! Dude was a stud!
Arnold looked more alpha and had a fuller chest.
Cuz of his pubic hair mustach he lost ..
37 years later.....this shit still happens now..lol
and this is why i still say phill heath would destroy arnold today now that his movie carrer is over!!!
PumpChasers it will happen for ever..as long as people live on This planet
PumpChasers very true
Everywhere in the world
PumpChasers ,
I think a lot of bodybuilders thought what Mike said. Mike was just fearlessly vocal about it.
*Mike was in great shape and his definition was better than Arnold in those pictures. ✅😀*
06:52...That is the goal...what a physique.
I knew Mike and he was my trainer before he passed. He was one of the most honest men I’ve ever known. He was also one of the most gifted bodybuilders and an incredibly smart person. He was right. Whether Arnold took 2nd or 8th. He didn’t win this contest.
Mike Mentzer's physique was underrated, he had aesthetics and size
+Spoon “Spoon” Mike trained Yates
Mentzer was certainly aesthetic. His weak point had to be his shoulders tho.
Agreed!
The guy was stacked to the hilt!
Too bad he let this loss eat at him, and ultimately keep him from doing more in the sport.
007
Agreed you can definitely notice on 5:39 of the video when he is standing next to Arnold
They were both very symmetrical
Great advice from Mike Mentzer. One of the most underrated bodybuilders ever. He was very smart. To the people that say he was a crack head. It was prescribed by the doctors to him when he was competing, he had to work, write and train while dieting, so he doesn't have enough energy, so he got prescribed amphetamines. But he's not a crack head.
When Joe Weider put Arnolds picture on the magazine covers the magazine sales soared. That's why Arnold always won. Mentzer was right. It's all fixed.
I always thought Mike Mentzer had a great physique and should have Been at least a two-time Mr. Olympia winner
God dam body builders looked so much better back then wtf happened ?
I agree!
They look like absolute shit now!
Hate today's look!
007
Lost their way.
Excessive drugs today (mega, mega dosing).
Poorer training.
Excessive body weight.
Insulin and possibly igf.
Human Growth Hormone is the problem of today. Of course steroids were used back then but were more controlled. Guys are just over doing things today. This is my opinion.
Insulin with Hgh as wrecked the sport. I️ prefer classic physic.
mstick yes steroids is what happened
Mentzer remarked in a 1997 interview how Dorian Yates mysteriously cut-off all contact with him after winning the Olympia under his tutelage, at the same time as Weider also went cold on him at which point he left Flex for Muscular Development. The suspicion was that Weider had words with Dorian, fearing that his god-like "Trainer of Champions" image was under threat.
First bodybuilder to get a perfect score, and do it back to back but lose to frank Z with a perfect score....go figure.
He was 29 years old at the time and just starting to hit his peak. Perfect score in the Universe, then perfect score in the heavyweight division (losing to Zane) at the 79 Olympia...and getting even better. Then he gets tossed a 5th place nugget in 1980...yeah nothing odd about that.
@@SDA0271 He could definetly have beaten Lee Haney afterwards, if he continued
@@SDA0271 What could have been :(
To me, Mentzer had the best physique. Unlike every other bodybuilder, you can tell he has a hard, solid, thick frame. This is something that a lot of other BB's don't have. I think doing tons of reps, high volume workouts gives people that "ripped" look, without really building a bigger more solid frame, coupled with roids this is why people get that "cartoonish" look. Even Arnold himself once said that people who ignore the compound movements look "soft." Whenever you see Mentzer, rather you agree or disagree with his training philosophy, you can see the results of heavy lifting and HIT routines. When I look Mentzer, I am like wow, that is the only pro that I'd actually want to look like. Simply a legend, and brilliant, hence why his training works.
@Captain Mantastic just shut up you fucking arnold nut hugger
Mike looked more complete
Great interview.Mike was a very intelligent individual and one of the most knowledgeable when it came to training and nutrition. He definitely was outspoken and not afraid to tell it like it is.Take the last Olympia all the judges took a blind eye stance to the unappealing bubble guts and crowned a pregnant looking Phil Heath!Furthermore in the majority of interviews with fitness bloggers and the head judges the majority never brought up the bubble gut issue! Thanks Nick keep it up.Nicks Strength,Power and Investigative reporting!
R.I.P. The Mentzers Brothers
It was a picture of Mike Mentzer on the cover of a magazine that changed my sport into bodybuilding, and I eventually became a Mr Universe. There is an upper body shot on the mag where he looks like a greek god, chiseled granite. Great physique.
Was that photo in 1979 on Muscle Mag?
I was lucky enough in the 1970's to see both Mike and Ray Mentzer guest pose and I also attended their seminars. They were both amazing but Mike had a shape and density that we had not seen at that time. He was startling in his size. Not as big as the monsters of today but a much better looking physique.
I remember watching that one on TV. I would have picked Mentzer. He had tremendous back development. Arnold looked past his prime.
Was Mike doing this interview on a treadmill?
I think Mike Mentzer had some good points here, Arnold was the Weider's poster boy.
That was too cool! Mike Mentzer was an awesome bodybuilder. Dynamite forearms!
I had many phone conversations with Mike in the 90’s. He was a fascinating and brilliant guy. I was shocked when he died so young.
MrChuckwagon55 that's pretty cool.. how did you get to know him? I met Casey Viator in the 1980 and Mike Mentzer came to my gym to visit... Mentzer was definitely an inspiration to me.... people don't realize how intelligent and good he was, prior to his difficulties....
Goes to show what happens when you hold on to bitterness and defeat. A losers mentality ...
Captain Mantastic - 49 is very young to die. The average age of death in the USA is 78.
Back then Bodybuilders were so much Better
Nowadays... All are pregnant
I didn't even get a notification, I sensed u uploading
The force is strong in you, a powerful Sith you have become.
haha
Excellent humor
People need to realize that charisma and stage presence are also a deciding factor, fair or not
I would never try to compete in a sport where someone's opinion would cause me to lose.
I’d like to offer Mike Mentzer a UFC contract
Dana White Vince get Dana!!
Well it's gonna be tough to find a fair opponent since he has been dead for years.... I'm thinking CM Punk.
Wtf some CHILDISH PRICK coping the Vince asshole idea... 2 dicktards
Dana White need a portrait shor of dana for your pfp
Jazz Man lol
Joe Weider robbed two deserving winners from Mr. Olympia. Sergio Olivia and Mike Mentzer were the worthy winners of 72 and 80 Mr. Olympia. I am not against Arnold but Weider promoted him so much.
because mustache
that's what stopped from dating your mom...lol
Samir Banout had mustache too, but he won a title.
Didn't somebody say that on the People's Court lol
@@bogdanpst Joe Weider had mustache lol
I would like to offer Mike Mezunte a WWE contract
Vincent Kennedy McMahon fake! *BOOM!*
Mike Meltzer
Fuck off with that shit you getting so tiresome you childish imbecile
Why not offer Arnold a contract
Offer Ray Mentzer one as well.
what impacts me the most is hearing him lose his breath and how difficult it is to him have a normal conversation!. Nice video Nick!
Mike Mentzer was clear winner in 1980 Mr. Olympia.
Nice work Nick for sourcing this audio, now get to work and find more!
mike is a smart dude and was a good man (with a good body too) rest in peace
Awesome video Nick, more videos like these please, I like the ones that are a little longer.
your videos get better by the day! amazing journalism!
There were heated words between Arnold and Mike Mentzer, it came close to fists and comments like Arnold saying Mike could "never win the Olympia with a big gut" were thrown at each other
Do more stuff on Mentzer, he was an interesting guy.
Fascinating interview with the late Mike Mentzer. He is correct about this contest in Australia. It was a real charade. And in fact, the next year, with Franco it was just as bad, if not worse. I would have had Arnold in fourth at this contest. And the IFBB did this with Oliva later.
Arnold was head and shoulders in structure above Mentzer. Mentzer was hurt by his placing but Arnold got to him personally and that is why he quit.
6:55 What can you say? He is perfect.
the photo at 7:00 ... my word this man looked amazing
why didnt he play superman? Looks like clark kent with a mustache
Have to agree. Arnold definitely did deserve "some" of his wins in his prime and became bigger than and transcended the sport, which helped him no doubt in the 1980 Olympia. Doesn't really diminish Arnold's legacy because of his other achievements, but definitely stopped other bodybuilders who's only avenue of recognition was bodybuilding, like Mentzer and Zane from gaining the success that they definitely deserved. The IFBB are definitely accountable as are others, for multiple dubious decisions, before and since.
@@dereknapier836 bullshit, Arnie's physique looked lackluster compared to Mentzer's, if a 5' 8 man can make Arnie at 6'2 look smaller than him then clearly Mentzer had a better physique.
Bro I love your shit man. Have learned so much shit. The golden era and old school is what inspired me so thank you for keeping it alive and educating and getting us hip on the legends.
Mentzer videos are the best
I had a great picture of Mike posing like hercules with the lion skin. It was on my wall as a kid. I always thought he had a aesthetic physique. Big but not bloated. Awesome build.
Wasn’t Arnold also one of the sponsors of the 1980 MR olympia ?
He's got a point... He's in great condition in these pics
He can get the best bodybuilding mustache award!!!
Arnold was actually booed off the stage in Australia, that to me says the contest was fixed. Arnold was furious when he was booed off the stage and was yelling at Maria Shriver backstage...
Interesting. How do you know this?
P Luch
I remember when this happened like it was yesterday. I knew someone who was actually there and the only thing I remember him saying about the show was that arnie was booed off the stage. Again I wasn't there (I was still in high school) but it was pretty common knowledge he was BOOED OFF THE STAGE
I knew someone who was there- at the show. And Arnold was so furious at being booed he was screaming at Maria Shriver backstage, calling her a "bitch" if I recall correctly (and I may be wrong on that). Now, if you watch the video "The Comeback" all you will HEAR is applause, but if you watch the fan reactions it is 180 degrees different. The reason is the shows promoter was Australian IFBB President Paul Graham, who trained with Arnold in 1969 at Vine's Gym, and later at Gold's Gym on Pacific Ave. He made that "documentary" and he rigged the audio.
bullshit
Stefan Joseph
Where you around back then? This stuff was all published in M&F and MM international. It really happened. One of the networks filmed the event for wide world of sports but shitcanned it after the fiasco. It was an ugly time....
Mike was definitely one of my favorites back in the day.
Pause the video at 4:00 and look at Arnolds lower mid-section. Better ab aesthetic than Frank Zane yet with amazing arm and chest development. His body was nearly as perfect as it's possible to be. THAT is why Arnold won in 1980.
Agreed, Arnold didn't deserve the 1980 Olympia win
Mentzer makes a great point here and definitely had reason to complain....
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines Mike was an objectivist and rest of IFBB body builders are puppet for Joe.
I am not into bodybuilding, but they looked so much more awesome then today..
I had this cassette tape at one time as well as a Dan Duchaine interview cassette . Bill Phillips and Muscle Media 2000 was the best thing out there in the early 90s before the internet .
I understand that people are fans of Arnold, but the fact is that Mike should have won 1980's Mr.Olympia and they should accept that!
donmlaaden agreed but, he did not. People have to accept that as well.
So why he had 4'th place not 2'nd??
Lol he didn't even think he should've won, he placed 5th
Piotrek 1998 because his chest sucked compared to 1st 2nd and 3rd place
Have only one word for Mentzer- Respect!
I've seen both guys at that competition.. I don't understand why Mike believes Arnold should not have won like it was impossible? Arnold was in great shape too, and taller.. I would have voted for him if I had been a judge...
Did Mentzer ever say who he thought should have won it? I know Arnold was off, but judging from what I've seen nobody else looked any better. I mean you could actually make a case for Tom Platz who was in the best shape of his life. I think the real travesty was that Platz didn't even come in the top 6. He looked way better than Mentzer who placed 5th. It's the only contest I've ever seen Platz in where his legs didn't overpower his upper body, plus he was ripped to the bone. Mentzer was very conditioned for the 80' Olympia, but he looked rather flat to me.
Mentzer was tied for 4th with Boyer. They gave Mentzer the 5th place trophy. Look it up
SO bizarre that the Mentzer twins died just two days apart like that. I mean, what are the odds?
Mike traning style was amazing and he has done so much for the sport !
Great video Nick. You bring us the history of this sport with an honest point of view. Thanks for what you do.
Most Mr. Olympias who've won the title multiple times have at least one win they didn't deserve. Some have more than one. It's the stupid attitude that you have to be multiple times better than the champ to win. You can't simply be the better bodybuilder that night.
OMG Boyer Coe. I liked him in the Lou Ferrigno documentary Stand Tall. It was offered as an extra on The Incredible Hulk Returns/Trial of The Incredible Hulk DVD.
Arnold had balls to do that comeback - it would have destroyed his legacy had he lost
Love your videos
In a hunded years of body-building-physics, in my opinion,
Metzger was and is as close to the 'choice' build as I've ever seen.
Mike mentzer known for his Low volume training right ? Why do I noticed that so many bodybuilders that did low volume (hi intensity) training had a thick and dense look muscles rather than rounded balloons, is it because their training approach or genetic ?
bayu mantari mix of both, but i think it’s cuz heavy weights and help build density which also makes the muscle looks hard and “thick” so it’s a mix of both genetics and heavy training
bayu mantari he's the father of hit training?
he was all about heavyweight
I think it's the training if you think about powerlifters they train in a similar way and the guys aren't "big" but they are thick.
It is not genetics it's is simply training. Intensity in a workout is what builds muscle so the whole point is to do 1 set till you reach absolute failure. To achieve this you take 75% of your max and perform repetitions with 4 seconds on positive and negative till you reach positive failure then you have your spotter lift the positive for you and then you will do a negative rep as slow as you possibly can. The whole point of working out is to cause micro tears that heal and become stronger. These tears happen mostly on the negative phase of a lift because it is stretching the muscle as much as possible.
Actually Mike Mentzer was not the father of High Intensity Training- That distinction would be given to Arthur Jones- then his disciple, Ellington Darden, everything that Mike knew he learned from these two men.
Nah. What you normally don't see in the pictures from people saying arnold shouldn't have won is 1 very simple thing. Roid Gut
Roid Gut. Pretty much everyone besides Frank Zane and Arnold had roid gut going on because they were all roiding up to the extreme to gain mass to beat arnold and Zane. The roid gut wasn't as bad as it is today but it was bad. Watch a video of metzer in particular, he loses control of his roid gut a couple of times. Only Zane and arnold kept their poses and control. It's not who has a better body in a picture or size. It's who can pose the best, and looks the best, balance, development and not fucking goddamn roid gut.
I agree the Mentzer should have beaten Arnold that year. Not sure that Mike should have won the contest, though. His chest was clearly small.
Arnold had the best physique, and he was the best figure head for the sport. The results speak for themselves. IMHO
1:04 His upper body is phenomenal ,,massive AND aesthetic. Professional personality and a businessman.
More info on Mike Mentzer! He’s a forgotten legend.
RIP Mike! As a massive Arnold fan he (Arnold) shouldn’t have won in 80 and one year won the Olympia as the only contestant!
and don' forget he got the first perfect 10 in the Mr Universe.
Mike's HIT saved my plateau. Not saying Heavy Duty training is the absolute truth but it doesn't get the attention and credit it deserves.
This is what i call looking good. Mike is my idol and his physique keeps me from thinking i need to look like Roelly Winklaar
Mike was great. But 80' kinda reminds me of 91'.
A lot give the win to Dorian. Having a similar physique in some poses with Haney.
But you gotta knock the champ out. Not lose a split decision.
J D Arnold was not the champ in the 1980 Mr O, Frank zane was.
J D Knock the Champ Out ? That would have been Frank Zane ....Not Arnold !
Arnold was given that Mr Olympia Mike mentzer look much better. Arnold also lost to Sergio Oliva the myth he was given that mr. Olympia to just like in boxing how they give the boxing matches to Floyd Mayweather he got his ass kicked by Marcos Maidana and also by Oscar De La Hoya it is all rigged
I believe Mike had the most balanced look of anyone,I attended a Mike Mentzer and Boyer Coe clinic in oklahoma city back in 81' at a hotel,I talked with both men, very down to earth guys. Mike and his brother Ray both had what most BB's never had,all american good looks, real men handsome. That being said,NOBODY had Arnold's physique and still don't,his mold was broke and there will never be another. But the 1980 Oly should have been Mike's hands down,he was robbed......
Bill Phillips....haven't heard that voice for a long time. I remember his mag and fitness challenges. Is he still active today? I remember i wanted that gosh damn Lamborghini of his lol.
I was there at the 1980 Olympia and I saw that Arnold had some stiff competition on that day and I can say from my perspective that I still have reservations on who should have won. I know that you, Nick has said that Chris Dickerson was the least impressive Olympia winner, but I can tell you that on that day he impressed the most as his muscle development, balance and conditioning was the best on stage and he came in second. It`s funny that no one speaks about Dickerson at that 1980 Olympia as for my part he deserved his placing above the rest and it would not be out of place if he won that day.
Bodybuilding is by nature an imprecise sport. In many respects it is dependent on the person judging. That being said, from my standpoint of over 40 years powerlifting and seeing a fair number of bodybuilding contests the 1980 Mike Mentzer was the best looking physique I have ever seen. If I was blessed with looking like anyone I could pick I would pick Mentzer in 1980.
In pretty much every single sport trying to go from a subculture type sport to a widely appreciated and financially lucrative sport there has been a controversy and even more so a very marketable athlete who can not only resonate with the current fans be it through their drive and success or just because of a likeable personality with a great back story, but can also attract new fans in numbers never before seen by prior pinnacle athletes in that sport. To cut this comment down and get to the point I am saying that there will be a moment when a choice is made that is done so for the sport as a whole which is very likely to be not so great for the individual athletes. Arnold may have been bodybuilding's moment and they went with it.
Where do u find these amazing clips on bodybuilding bro? It's priceless.
I think we can all agree that mentzer was a beast
Mike is correct
Back in the 1980's, on a visit to L.A., I wandered into the "original" Gold's Gym (Pumping Iron fame) in Santa Monica. I was at the counter talking with someone and Mike Mentzer walked up. I shook hands with him and said hello......then he headed over to do some tricep pushdowns. He and his brother died much too young.
Yes a 10 minute video!!!! Woooo
Thumbnail guy on the right did look more aesthetic 🤔
