- In today's self improvement video I'm sharing when self help is toxic, from a Christian perspective. I'm all for reading personal development books but there are at least four common themes in these books that you need to be cautious of, especially as a Christian.
Side note: this video is not intended to downplay your value to your family, society or God...it's simply putting things into perspective that without God, none of us could do anything and without God and Jesus, none of us will have eternal life in Heaven.

Completely agree. ❤ I also think there are self help books labeled as "Christian" that sink into these unbiblical truths. We have to read with discernment. Appreciate your thoughts on this.

Thank you for posting this video. I completely agree with you on this matter. Self help books can absolutely be toxic because many of them are so focused on "me, me, me" and not the real truth. I'm not saying that all self help books are toxic, but as you said, many of them are centered on self love. Without God we are nothing. I believe that we are precious in God's eyes and that he loves us, but it's not about us. One book that I found incredibly real and very truthful is My Divine Comedy: A Mother's Homeschooling Journey by Missy Andrews. That book is one that I recommend for every mother, not just homeschooling moms. It is so humbling and real and doesn't fill your mind with nonsense. Thank you for standing up for the truth.

So true!! I have been reading alot of Christian books and obviously some are better than others with the content. But there is alot of work tbe Holy Spirit has done lately and im learning so much. Im so grateful for good christian nonfiction and podcasts that belo me grow into who God is calling me to be. Its anw exciting journey
Hey Becky, thanks for your videos. I really appreciate your honesty about this journey you have been on. I have also been working on myself recently and it can be challenging! I do find the recent self help advice is very focused on 'me only', and it is important to keep perspective on Jesus's teachings of loving others. Thanks for the reminder.
I have always struggled with the self help book trend because of these and similar reasons. So much of it is not Biblical. Thanks for sharing.

I think all people are judgmental. It’s just how our brains we work. In today’s culture it’s become trendy to say “no judgement,” but that’s a lie. So thank you for admitting it.
I am so behind already in the New Year, but I caught up on your most recent videos today, and I love them all! Please continue to share whatever you are feeling led to. I am with you on your feelings towards toxic self help. It's to the point it has discouraged me from the self help genre altogether, but I know that's not good either. I just find it difficult to keep moving forward in a world that is so disconnected from God. It makes one feel pretty lonely, so I am happy that you are here Becky, and you are such a light of encouragement.

Hi Becky - I'm not a Christian but I agree with the principle of so much of what you're saying. A lot of self help is based in Individualism, and broadly encourages people to be as selfish as possible in order to achieve ultimate happiness. Although I agree that we sometimes need to put ourselves first when we spend a lot of time serving others (e.g. moms!) looking for happiness in constant selfishness is hugely flawed. I've seen people who follow these books to the letter blowing up their marriages and friendships and relationships with family because they are so busy 'setting boundaries' that they don't realise they're cutting people and things out of their lives for the sake of short term comfort. I think it's very misguided. Thanks for posting this video.
I so agree with you about the "setting boundaries" issue. Yes, boundaries are important but when taken to the extreme, you'll end up completely closed-off and alone and that's not healthy either.
