I thought I was the only one seeing the skulls in the waves
And you’re right about the pendulum of time swinging over the rivers ( waters) of time, the flow of time here seems so relevant because war is not the peaceful flow, but the crashing ending to so many peoples lives.
I’ve seen several reactions to this, yours is faraway the best, you have captured this song beautifully sad

@@stillmrdogeone comment about the pendulum in the beginning of the video. Did you notice that, at first, it moves from left to right and from right to left, LIKE PENDULUMS DO, right? But then it starts to move towards a different axis and it's beginning to face YOU and then hits YOU right in the face!!! So whatever the pendulum stands for metaphorically, although at first you look at it from the outside, afterwards it becomes something personal and something not as abstract and detached as you thought, probably because the abstract meaning of time signified by the pendulum starts to become concrete WHEN IT'S Y-O-U-R TIME... And YOUR time WILL come... Time for what; The video says it all... "Every man has to die", which says that the meaning of the song is universal and diachronic! And notice how the pendulum hangs above the sea, signifying the fluidity of life, meaning YOU NEVER KNOW, right? All of these in only few seconds of black and white animation drawings! As you pointed out 10000% correctly in your reaction, this video speaks VOLUMES with metaphors and deep meanings. I don't want to make this post longer, but I just want to say I love your take and your wording, I see you're open to feeling and expressing about it honestly, and to tell you the truth I can't watch this Dire Straits video without crying. Can't sing it without the trembling voice, can't stop literal tears coming out, not if I even tried. I love you man, know that for a fact. I wish you all the best for your young daughter, that you mentioned somewhere in your reaction, God bless you and her. Take care, man!

Mark wrote the song after he lost a friend in the Falklands War; it's sung from the point of view of a dying soldier, whose realizing he's not going to make it home, and he's thanking his brothers in arms and bidding them 'farewell'. It's also widely seen to be a anti-war anthem because of one of the final lines, 'we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms' (meaning more broadly, 'on our fellow man').

With a smile on your face.. "I have such high expectations for this so..." and then it hits you. Oh yes! Lovely reaction, and I'm pleased you put the subtitles up because, with the best will in the world, Mark is not the clearest of singers. But his voice here just fits the mood perfectly. I'm so glad you felt it. Thank you.

For another LIVE VERSION, you could also check out the Live at Wembley performance for Nelson Mandela's birthday. Suggestions for future Dire Straits reactions: A very unique, surprising and amazing track is their live Alchemy performance of “Once Upon a Time in the West”; do yourself a favour and check it out. The official video for ‘Money For Nothing’ is funny and the live performance of that song from in ‘Dire Straits (Live) - On The Night’ 1992... one of the all-time best guitar riffs: The story behind "Money for Nothing" goes like this... Mark was in a store in NY, and on one whole wall of the store there were TVs tuned to MTV (Music Television); he overheard the workers making derisive (and jealous perhaps) comments about the performers in the videos and how easy those guys had it compared to their own blue-collar jobs (moving TVs, microwaves and refrigerators etc.). Mark grabbed a pen and paper and wrote their remarks down verbatim right there, and those comments became the lyrics of the song. Given that they (Dire Straits) are musicians themselves, singing the lyrics in an MTV video no less, it's quite good natured, self-parodic and cheeky! I also really like the upbeat “Lady Writer”, which is shorter than some of their other tracks but is very enjoyable, especially Mark’s finger-work.

Mark is one of the few who can make a guitar weep. So many decades I've been listening to this song, and it still tears me up a bit. War is pure evil. The artist Sting has a line in one of his songs that goes "I never saw no military solution that didn't always end up as something worse". That's always resonated with me. Sure, there are times when evil has to be stopped but many wars are more about greed and lust for power rather than stopping an evil.
Another singer songwriter who I have respect for in terms of him singing about war is James Blunt. He served in the British Army and was deployed with NATO peacekeepers during the Kosovo War in the 90's. Check out his songs "No Bravery" and "Carry You Home". They're heavy though, brace yourself. He's at his best when he sings about his personal lived experiences.

The version played at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute 1988 is generally recognised as a special version. Dire Straits reunited with Eric Clapton on rhythm guitar to headline the show which was watched by more people worldwide than Live Aid.

Mark and his guitar play the perfect duet together. This song was about Britain's war with the Falkland islands (Argentina).
A solider is dying there, never to see his homeland again. He doesn't want his brothers in arms to think that he's deserting them. This is one of my fave songs. There will be some debate on the live version, I love Mark's live performance in Berlin when he's a bit older. Of course the one they played for Nelson Mandela in S.Africa is also great. Thanks for your review, you never disappoint!

Mark Knopfler wrote this after hearing a comment from his dad about the Falklands war. The words are so deep and the guitar is so emotional, proving you don't have to play really fast to be impressive. Yes, watch the live version of this song from the On The Night concert.

For a live version of this try Mandela's 70th birthday version or a 2007 version from Berlin to mark the 25th anniversary of the Falklands war and benefit veterans. This was written from the perspective of a mortally wounded soldier on the battlefield. One of the best war protest songs ever imho.

The song makes no direct references “to the war” but being a narrative from the soldier's point of view, instead only describes what he saw and experienced. It's a human point of view.
