I used to watch Soul Train, Midnight Special, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, and sometimes American Bandstand. All essential if you wanted to know the latest dance moves, hottest artists, etc. The great Al Green though! This one is one of my favorites because it showcases his vocal range and all the tempo change ups. Let's Stay Together, Love and Happiness, etc, etc, etc...

With a voice and song like this, no one cares what he's wearing and his message was acceptance. Kudos to Al!

I'm an old white guy from the 50s, 60s and 70s, and Black music, whether the 50s Jazz-Pop, Motown, or any of the R&B, Soul, et al, artists made a huge difference in my life back then. Al Green was one of my favorites in the 70s and I never missed Soul Train. I quit American Bandstand fairly early on, because once it relocated from Philly to L.A., it became dominated by white pop music. Pffft...I lost interest. I had to laugh at your reaction to Al's 'outfit'. 'Man purse?!' LOL! Those short-shorts were all the rage back then for all men. Looking at it now--oh, hell no! Hahaha! But I wore those really short shorts then, too, when I was in my teens and 20s. Thanks for the reaction. I really enjoyed it...

What a marvelous artist!! Seventies’ fashion was unkind to many of us!!!
For some additional amazing contemporary soul singing, check out Allen Stone- live from his mother’s living room singing UNAWARE. He also kills it live from Bonnaroo on Bob Marley’s Is This Love with gospel choir.
He is the most unlikely looking soul singer you’ll ever see! But what a voice and heart!! ❤❤❤❤

He never touched it to keep it on or anything. It was very complimentary to the rest of his outfit by the way!! I never realized he had such a good body and nice legs!! Just sayin'

To have a nice rounded musical experience you watched Soul Train American Bandstand and Midnight Special . Actually the powers that be funneled whatever show they wanted you to see according to your geographical location. Trying to keep us separated has always been an agenda. We wasn't even allowed to dance in school, my friends little box record player was confiscated because we were caught dancing to The Monkees.....the Monkees.

Al could certainly hit those higher notes. However, I would point out that he didn't do runs of the scales in every phrase like so many of today's "artists" do. In the early 70s, I lived in Dayton, OH & we all watched Soul Train more than Bandstand because Soul Train looked more like our classrooms & neighborhoods. I was shocked in 1974 when we moved to WV & hardly any of my classmates watched Soul Train. Just 10 years old & teased for watching Soul Train. I won't repeat the phrases/words used because I swore never to use them myself & I have kept that promise for 48 years. I enjoy the reactions for the most part unless ya'll fall into sexist silliness. I admit to having a bit of a crush on Fenom, you silver fox, you.

They made him wear that ridiculous outfit....it looks like he's lip syncing.....I hate what they did to some of the era's greatest talent. We never saw Al Green dressed like that ever again. It gave him great exposure but I'll bet he hated every minute of it.

I love the 60's and 70's everyone was experimenting with everything from music to fashion taste. lol 😆And let's just say some people became a little "exuberant" with their choices. Although no one could poke fun at Al Green's vocal skills, he was an incredible artist. I think many would put him into the "PDC" (panty droppers club) category. And since you ask for more "Soul Train" performances I thought I would give you fellas a few suggestions, in case you're interested. "The Isley Brothers - Who's That Lady" (by the channel: Soul Train) and "Detroit Spinners - Could It Be I'm Falling In Love. HD" and "McFadden & Whitehead - Ain't Know Stopping Us Now (Official Soul Train Video)" and "Lou Rawls - You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine (Official Soul Train Video)" and finally "Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - The Love I Lost (Official Soul Train Video)" this is some of the best R&B, soul and Motown you will ever hear. This is magical stuff, brother. This was a fun reaction guys I really appreciate you, thanx 4 sharing
