I quit American Bandstand fairly early on, because once it relocated from Philly to L.A., it became dominated by white pop music. Pffft...I lost interest. I had to laugh at your reaction to Al's 'outfit'. 'Man purse?!' LOL! Those short-shorts were all the rage back then for all men. Looking at it now--oh, hell no! Hahaha! But I wore those really short shorts then, too, when I was in my teens and 20s. Thanks for the reaction. I really enjoyed it...

Al could certainly hit those higher notes. However, I would point out that he didn't do runs of the scales in every phrase like so many of today's "artists" do. In the early 70s, I lived in Dayton, OH & we all watched Soul Train more than Bandstand because Soul Train looked more like our classrooms & neighborhoods. I was shocked in 1974 when we moved to WV & hardly any of my classmates watched Soul Train. Just 10 years old & teased for watching Soul Train. I won't repeat the phrases/words used because I swore never to use them myself & I have kept that promise for 48 years.
