  • We say goodbye to the Thirteenth Doctor and Jodie Whittaker in THE POWER OF THE DOCTOR (Series 13 Episode 9)!
"The Power of the Doctor" is the third and final of the 2022 specials of Doctor Who and is also the "BBC Centenary Special."
The episode stars Jodie Whittaker in her final appearance as the Thirteenth Doctor as well as Mandip Gill and John Bishop as her companions, Yasmin Khan and Dan Lewis, respectively. The episode also features the return of Jacob Anderson as Vinder and Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart, both of whom last appeared in the thirteenth series; Sacha Dhawan as The Master and Patrick O'Kane as Ashad, both of whom last appeared in the twelfth series; previous companions Janet Fielding as Tegan Jovanka and Sophie Aldred as Ace.
This also marks an end to Chris Chibnall's time as showrunner as the baton is handed back to Russell T. Davies who is returning to take over the helm once again. Ncuti Gatwa was announced as the future Doctor but this special throws an unexpected surprise into the mix!

With forced regenerations, you can force yourself to regenerate into anyone or any species. And with the master, he used his face and memories and quite literally everything as a template for what she would be forced to regenerate into. And it would guide that next life. It was still very much the doctor, but also the master. Hint, the clothes, the recorder.

I genuinely enjoyed this episode. It 100 percent had ALLLL of the faults of chibnall writing, in absolute spades. the chief one being the doctor largely felt like a vessel for his own ambitions and messy stories he wanted to tell rather than as an individual incarnation with any sense of interiority or actual emotional journey. Its this lack of character arc and drama that has landed me on the opinion that this was a great, fun, fan servicey treat of an episode that celebrates the history of the show, but at the same time, jodie/13 was basically a plot point in. so not a truly great final episode for HER doctor. She had some great moments mind but whenever there was genuine feeling or emotion with her doctor it was purely her bringing that out, almost never the script itself. However, putting aside my qualms about how her doctor was once again relegated to an exposition machine for chibnalls stories, the episode itself was a messy fun as hell adventure: LOADS of great moments from a character perspective, loads of fun action and visual moments that really added up to a crazy, memorable adventure. Once again though, I would say it worked in spite of a graceless, witless script rather than because of it,

For me this is what a Doctor Who episode should be. It should just be a fun rollercoaster. It's what Chibnall and the other writers forgot. My theory with the regeneration, is it's not going to be classed as a full regeneration. Due to the forced regeneration, and possible trauma, Ten's return could be a bridge until The Doctor finds themself.
We don't see who Ncuti is talking to. He may be at the very same place Jodi was. Talking to, and gaining some insight from previous Doctors.
Rember the show returns for the 60th Anniversary. What a simple explanation for having as many previous Doctors as possible.

Because of this episode every classic Doctor except the 4th has returned outside of their era. It’s crazy how that contrasts to the modern era where only 10 has returned outside his era (except 11’s really brief cameo in Deep Breath which doesn’t really count). I don’t think we’ll ever see 9 or 12 again since Ecclestone fell out with the TV side of the show and Capaldi said he’s done his time, but I’m hoping some day in the future we might see 11, 13 and 14 again in some form.

The episode was the best. From the return of Mel, Jo grant, Ian Chesterton, Kate Stewart to classic Doctors actually live doing real stuff within the story. Lots of action, thrills and chills and it was a great send off for 13. and i loved your review buddy. Yes Tennant is 14th and then Nacuti becomes 15. You were curious as to why Tennant was brought back... Simple, the viewing figures here in the UK had fallen pretty badly and R T Davies wanted to get die hard fans back supporting the show so he came up with the idea of the Doctor becoming Tennant because here Tennant was like one of the most popular Doctors in the new era of Who. It was a well calculated publicity stunt to get the rating back up. You may not be aware of that in the USA.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact Yaz and and Vinder did a forced degeneration to drive The Master back into his body and because of that it caused a degeneration. But because the 9th Doctor (I think) said that normal degenerations are impossible, it could be the Celestial Toymaker’s doing.

I think were going to look back on the Chibnall/Jodie era fondly in futuretimes. He fucked up a LOT, but thats mainly because he easily took the most risks any incoming showrunner has faced when it comes to introducing new plot elements. From his first season being devoid of classic elements (something I still respect, that season has some of my favourite episodes of all time), to a new take on the Cartmel Masterplan, to the insane ambition of Doctor Who Flux. his biggest sin was missing the mark.
One can argue that he should have aimed lower but imho I'm glad he took those risks. He's left RTD with so many interesting plot threads, from a version of UNIT seemingly entirely staffed by classic companions (which, with a return from osgood is basically the PERFECT recipe for a spin off I mean come on) to the whole still unresolved timeless child arc (which has been left in the hands of RTD and could therefore end very well), his overall effect on the canon has been a positive one imo. Not to mention the Ruth Doctor. Comics have rendered her as the "first doctor" but lets face it, the TV show can and probably will retcon that for something a bit more fitting. Im still gunning for my theory that she exists betwixt Troughton and Pertwee which would finally and properly canonise the Season 6b theory.
For a lot of people, our unenjoyment of his tenure has been a result of stress, as his writing is often very flawed and it was very worrying seeing what he did with the universe, but now we don't have to worry about that, I think it will be a lot easier for people to see the good in this era.

Question, Does this ruin the 60th? Normally the 60th is when we see them bring back the previous Doctors and companions for an adventure. Does this mean that they wont do that for the 60th or does the end of this episode set up the 60th? Correct me if I'm wrong but The Doctor (I know we call him 14 but Tennant is technically 16 as he regenerated into himself 2x before now, Smith was 13 because of the addition of the War Doctor who has no number,) technically still had the other Doctors standing guard inside the Tardis and old companions are still around, could this facilitate that at least ONE of the 3 part adventures if not 3 features them? I would think you could do what they used to do in the old serial like the 5 Doctors where they broke the story into multiple parts (story arcs), that way you feature some of them in each story helping out so they don't overwhelm the main story. I could see this kind of like "Name of the Doctor" when Clara jumped into the Doctors time stream and we got glimpses of all the previous Doctors but in the 50th we only (and I don't mean that in a bad way) had 4, 10, 11. I'm just hoping that this doesn't take the wind out of the sails of the 60th special as the those are meant to "Special" and a time for the Doctor's to be together.

Ive been a doctor who fan since the 3rd incarnation of the doctor Jon Pertwee though i prefer Tom Baker for classic who. i wasn’t born for the first two doctors but they regenerated the same was a jodie and david change of person and outfit i’m also looking forward to Ncuti Gatwa and what he has to offer. If RTD and David Tennant hadn’t agreed to come back there would not be a doctor who the show was going to be cancelled then RTD agreed to come back and now we have a new era in Ncuti who will be the 15th doctor. David Tennant is and always will be my doctor and not just because we’re both Scottish but because doctor who will actually have an actor who can actually act unlike a certain female who has just left thank god. David is only in it for three episodes for doctor who’s 60th birthday. i wish it was longer then Ncuti follows after him. Ive never screamed so load when Tennant appeared. Fun fact but did you know more people tuned in for Tennant’s reveal than watched her actual episode so what does that say about Jodie’s era. Roll on November 2023 with actors of quality and storytelling. The only timelord that should be female was the master missy worked the doctor didn’t and i hope and pray we NEVER EVER see another female doctor again. Take care 😘🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
