Amex Gold Card - My HONEST Review (After 2 Years)

  • In this video, we’re doing an updated Amex Gold card review where I will answer, “Is the Amex Gold card worth it for me after 2 years?” This American Express credit card is one of the most popular credit cards in the world because the Amex Gold is very focused on benefits and features involving food. So depending on your situation and some of the things we’ll discuss in this video, the American Express Gold card could be the perfect fit for your wallet - or it might be overrated and overpriced.
    Some of the top Amex Gold benefits include earning 4x Membership Rewards per dollar on restaurants and groceries as well as the $120 Uber and $120 dining credits that come with this Amex credit card. Now, there is a $250 annual fee which is what people need to be careful of because if you aren’t optimizing how you use the Amex Gold, then you will end up losing money by holding this card.
    So hopefully this American Express Gold card review and my experience from having it over the past 2 years will be helpful. If you are considering getting the Amex Gold anytime soon, make sure you check your numbers like I did in this video. Also, make sure you are getting the best welcome bonus possible because there is a lot of value in that with any credit cards out there!

    Do you think the Amex Gold is still worth it at $250 per year? Or are there better options for a "food-focused" credit card?

      After churning the 90K SUB, I only put the $10 dining credit spend once a month on the card. I use the Uber credit to get the other $10 added to my Uber account but i even put that spend on another card. I will keep it open just to add Amex offers that i will not use to the card to try and generate offers i will use to my other card and then the 3x on flights.

      For groceries, the blue cash preferred card has been amazing for my family. I got a big cash back bonus ($350 with $3000 spent in 6 months I think it was) when I got the card and I will easily max out the 6% back for groceries to the first $6000 each year (it then reverts to 1% so when that happens I will switch to a different card for that category).
      I use it for the majority of my subscriptions (like Netflix, etc) and it gets 6% back on that. It gets 3% back on gas and other things as well. At a minimum, this card will make me over $650 profit every year excluding the sign on bonus. It is well worth the $95 annual fee!
      I have a couple of cards that will get back 3% at grocery stores consistently and my discover it card that gives 5% back during one of the spending quarters ($75 max with $1500 spent) so I will leverage that if necessary.
      My groceries are covered to a point but I dine out a lot with my family (me, wife and 3 sons). The gold card would help me get 4% back on dining and 4% on groceries if my 6% ran out or if the 5% back from Discover was not in the spending quarter. It would definitely be useful on my normal spending anyway, but the dining credits are also useless to me and I’d have to find an excuse to use the Uber credits so my effective annual fee would probably be the $250. I’ll have to run my numbers and see if it’s worth it after any initial bonus.

    I have the Amex everyday preferred cash back. 90 annual fee. 6x on groceries. 6% on streaming services. 3x on gas. 1% everything else. I don’t have kids so I don’t spend much on food. Something crucial I think is worth mentioning. For those of us that have a corporate Amex card, if you apply for a personal Amex card you can get a recurring statement credit as long as your corporate account is open. Platinum is $150, gold is $100, Green is $75, Blue Cash Preferred is $50.
    You don't get a bonus welcome offer (so for gold, it's 60k points), but the recurring $100 statement credit means you only have to use just over half of the dining credits to have an effective "no fee" card, and if you happen to use all of them then you're net positive before any rewards.
    Something to consider for those that think they'll keep the card for years; the recurring credit could be worth way more than an extra 15k or even 30k welcome offer.

    One of the best reviews of this card I’ve seen, my friend. At some point, if you’re like me, you’ll slow way down on the card applications. I now find myself saying, “why get this card? I already have a card that gives me 4X back (or whatever)”. At that point, the gold will resurface in your wallet. Also, because I have the Schwab Platinum card, I can always cash out my points earned on the Gold card at a decent rate. So, it still holds a firm place in my wallet. Regarding dining credits, Amex must know that customers hate the coupon book approach. They’d have many more if the quit playing games with that and just give a straight dining credit. Thanks again. Great job.

I think Amex BCP for grocery (6%) with lower annual fee plus Citi Custom Cash for dining (5% if that's your top category) is way better, and you additionally get 3% for gas and 6% for streaming with BCP. Gold is a jack of all trades, master of none card. Annual fee too expensive for everyday purchases, not powerful enough for travel. Get BCP for everyday, get Platinum for travel. Gold needs to drop its annual fee by $100 then I would be intrigued

I have taken to always using Grubhub & Uber Eats pick up to avoid the tip and get 5% back, plus any available discounts on top of that (other cards give me the free delivery services with both companies, and the services usually offer additional credits or discounts). This helps.
    That said, the credits do distort my spending, sending me out to a restaurant I might not otherwise choose just to make sure I can pile on enough deals to make the meal close to free and not cost myself money.
    I try to calculate the worth of cards based on points earned by my normal spend only; that makes the credits feel like “free” money and stops me from stressing over them.

    I agree with you. Yes, the credits help, but I have to spend over the credit to use it, it’s purposeless. If I don’t use it, I feel like that I’m not getting my full value. I’m not thrilled with their selection. I would prefer a flat credit to spend as I please.

    I had an Amex offer that was basically 3 months of the Uber/Uber Eats credits. I struggled to use these. Then I had the temporary monthly dining credits on the Delta Gold. Even though they were very easy to use, it was a hassle to keep track of them and sometimes I would have to go out of my way to use them. If I didn’t enjoy tracking an easy to use dining credit, then would I enjoy tracking the Amex Gold dining credits that are more limited? Given my experience with the Uber Amex offer and the temporary dining credits, I decided to take a pass on the Amex Gold.

    • @Daniel_Braun
      @Daniel_Braun  Před rokem +2

      Hey Vincent, sounds like the right move for you to pass on the Amex Gold! Yeah that's one of the major downsides to a lot of Amex cards is that you have to track all of these credits. I'd rather it just be a general dining credit that's automatically applied instead of only specific places

    Daniel, really great content! I recently got the Amex gold about two months ago and was lucky enough to get the 90,000 sign up bonus that I’m working towards right now. I’ve been able to travel outside the US a few times since I got this card but, I’ve experienced some difficulties. It seems a lot of the businesses do not accept Amex, at least not in the areas I’ve traveled to outside the US. I hope this doesn’t continue to be the case as I continue with my travel plans.
    Other than that, the Amex gold seems to be a pretty solid every day card. Might just have to consider getting another card (Mastercard/Visa) to use during travel overseas.
    Thanks again and keep up the good work! Cheers!

      @Daniel_Braun  Před rokem +3

      Hey Alonso, thanks so much for watching my content! Yeah that's definitely a common problem for Amex users outside of the US - it's good to travel with a Visa that has no foreign transaction fees to go along with the Amex Gold. But great sign up bonus you were able to get on this card!

      I love the way you think about it! I may have to borrow that analogy for a future video when I'm talking about these credits. I used to use Grubhub but not much lately. Thanks so much for the comment Corey!

  • @DoremonUCR

    Nice objective video. I think most people change their daily habits when they get the card vs the later where they wouldn’t have otherwise used the card at for those dining options. I think the card is overhyped when you got cards like the savor one and citi premier. Even with chase, if you’re smart you can easily get 3X in dinning and 5x on groceries all year around for no annual free. The only Amex card probably worth as a keeper even if you’re not annually in the positive is the platinum.

    I ignored the credits. Entirely. What I looked at was $250. Okay. 4x for two categories. What's my goal? One free flight. Target 32,000 SkyMiles. So for $8,000 in spend I am doing anyway between dining and grocery store spend annually, I should easily get a free flight. (Okay a flight for $250 technically, but still) I average 1.3 CPP with Delta. Typical flight from me to Michigan (my usual trip annually) would easily cost over $350 cash. This year it's a keeper again. $250 for a ticket that could easily cost me over $400. Without factoring in any credits, American Express Offers, retention offers, etc. So plan to keep another year. Take care tho sir. Best to you and your lady.
