    Q.
    Bryson DeChambeau's ball is lying right underneath a boundary fence, so that the ball appears to be inside the back of the railings. Is the ball in bounds?
    .
    A.
    If a boundary is defined by a boundary fence, then the Rules of Golf tell us that the line of the course is determined by the inside of the boundary posts, not the railings. For a ball to be in bounds, part of it must cross the straight line that runs between one boundary post to next.
    If no part of the ball is crossing this line onto the course side, then the ball is considered out, which is why Bryson's ball was considered to be Out of Bounds. His only option is to play his provisional ball.
    Rule 18.3, and the Definitions of Boundary Objects and Out of Bounds.

  • @naesmithadam3206
    @naesmithadam3206 Před 3 lety

    People ripping into him in the comments. If you're a golfer, how many times have you...
    - ripped a three wood, which is the club you hit the most poorly, for your second shot on a par 5 even though you have no chance of covering the distance and there's five bunkers and a lake next to the green? (and then taken a MULLY to see if you could do it the second time??)
    - raked your ball back and forth over the hole 6 or 7 times on your "gimme" and still taken it as ONE putt?
    - took driver out on the short dogleg par 4, because, even though you can't hit the ball with any sort of consistency, you know that this time, you can make it over the trees, over the ravine, through the tree branches on the other side, to a blind landing area, and wind up perfectly in the fairway?
    Golf if hard. DeChambeau might be a bit of a nerd when it comes to the technicalities of his swing, but he's good as all hell. This here's just a little bit of golf rage. I'd be angry too. Sucks for him though, for sure. He'll learn.

    Im by no means a PGA professional nor do i claim to be an expert, but even I know that a temporary object like bleachers, porta-potti and in Phil’s case a crowd control mesh fence that doesn’t play as part of the course under normal circumstances is different than a permanent object like a bathroom building, or snack shack or a metal fence that remains as part of the course 24/7.
    Hey Bryson, just for clarification on a rule you probably should already know being a professional and spending majority of your life playing golf, you get relief from temporary structures that are put into place strictly to accommodate a tournament without penalty. Structures that are permanent you play as it lies or take a penalty drop if unable. And out of bounds is determined by an imaginary line from the leading edge of 1 pole/stake to another and your ball must touch that imaginary line. It’s really not that complicated

    It's funny how Bryson cites Phil. He may have been too young to have seen Phil make some bad decisions trying to play hero ball. Eventually Phil matured and started to win majors. Bryson still has a long way to go in knowing when to and not to use his superman strength.

    The rule is exactly correct. The outer edge of a boundary fence is the boundary. If any part of the ball were touching the course it would be in bounds, He could go to the OB to play a ball that is in bounds but the ball is out. The difference in what Phil had was a temporary "crowd" fence. I work at the Honda Classic and we have a few holes where these temporary fences have been installed to keep people out of homeowner's back yards. They are NOT boundary fences. They are temporary immoveable obstructions. If the ball is over the fence but in bounds relative to the OB stakes, then the player gets TIO relief.
