- I made this IROKO and EBONY blank a long time ago and just walked away, find out why in this Woodturning project.
In this video you will see me demonstrating the use of Yorkshire grit on the iroko and ebony segmented woodturning bowl as well as making my own shine juice.
This ASMR woodturning channel, explores the uses of wood when combined with resin, epoxy, to make woodturning projects, that are easy and can be classed as art. A lot of the wood turning projects I make can be completed by the beginner through to the more experienced wood turner. If you have any ideas for artwork, wood inlays, epoxy projects or any other wood turning projects please get in touch. Collaborations are always welcomes.

Really like this bowl, and, as so many others have said, glad you got back to it and produced this beautiful piece.
Thank you for sharing, Mike 🙂
Thanks Fiona, when I glued this up I had no idea what I was doing and thought I'd done such a bad job I nearly threw it away 😭. So glad it turned out ok in the end 😀
I love how this turned out! that ebony stripe really adds a touch of elegance to the piece. Well done, Mike! 👍
Thanks Tom, wow this is an old one you found here lol 😆
@@MikeHolton Yeah. I find woodturning videos like yours very relaxing so I am digging through the Holton Vault® to get my wood turning fix.
Go back to vacationing, you!
@@tomburns7544 then stop replying so I can 🤣. The wife and I are sat by the pool enjoying the piece before the kids and crowd appear. Flying back early tomorrow, back in the country just after lunch.
Well Done, Mike, a lovely 'rescue job'; I know I have a pile of 'walked away from/ nearly projects' ... I bet we all have! - funny how sometimes the time feels right to give pieces another go - glad you did so with this one - thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks David, I have a shelf full of walked away from and a few more in the waste wood bin :)
I may do a 'can it be saved' mini series :)
@@MikeHolton That is a good idea; might be a bit time consuming for you though?
😂
Wow! The iroko and shine juice! Amazing. It almost looks as if it would always be warm to the touch.
Yeah, that shine juice give a really nice lustre. Thanks Ted :)
Just saw this a year after you did it and I'm so glad you revisited the piece it looked fantastic 😍
Thanks Troy, wow this seems so long ago now lol 😀
Bowl looks amazing glad you went back to it 😊
Me too!! Thanks Philippa :)
Really cool piece Mike, glad you came back to it!! Love the ebony slice! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks a bunch, me too, despite kicking myself for leaving it so long.
You have given me inspiration for designs with this piece...
Wonderful! Thanks 👍
Nice piece. I love the inlay and shine
Thanks 👍 and thanks for watching 🙂
this is beautiful! so glad you chose to give it another go. and i have been wondering forever what shine juice is and now i know - so thanks!!!!
Your welcome Dee, you now know what is it and how to make it :) Thanks as ever Dee, Mike
Very nice, Mike. Brian erwin NZ
Many thanks Brian 😀
Love the lip. So soft!!
Thank you!! And thanks for watching x
Stunning bowl Mike, Your emblem on the bottom goes great with the colour of the wood
Aston @IWMS
Thanks, it's taken me this long to realise that I never put an emblem on any of my work before I show it off lol.
Another beauty!
Thanks my friend 😀
The iroko grain, chatoyence and colours are amazing. Glad you decided to pick up that piece again. Gorgeous bowl. That may be too nice to sell. Well done.
I did not appreciate until recently that pure tung oil is a food-safe finish and creates a hard film robust finish. Has to be 100% tung oil not the brands with fillers and dyes.
Dave.
That's interesting, I'll have to have a look for some and give it a try, sounds a bit like Danish oil. All the best< Mike
Danish oils and many tung oil products have fillers, pigments etc. I have cans of such products.
The 100% tung oil is a pure product with no contamination. The can need to show 100% tung oil.
Dave.
@@lv_woodturner3899 Thanks Dave, I'll look out for some.
Great looking bowl 👍👍👍👍
Thank you Radar! Cheers!
Nice work Mike.
Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for supporting my channel, it means a lot!
Lovely, well done!
Thanks, appreciate your support ☺️
Wish I was talented .. awesome
I never knew I was lol 😃
Its very nice , it sounded like the was very hard👍
Thanks Vini, the iroko was fairly hard and the ebony was like stone! We got there in the end though :)
Very nice piece 👍
Thanks my friend 😊
I had to do some digging to find this one. I saw the short and wanted to see the full video. I couldn't leave you hanging at 99 likes.😆
Haha thanks! That is a very kind gesture, all the best, Mike
I could have told you it would lol along with all your other fans 😊
haha thanks, you are way too kind sometimes 😂 not that that's a bad thing 😀
looks great well done
Thanks Colin :)
Good afternoon. My husband & I just recently found your channel & have really enjoyed watching you create some beautiful projects. We have been watching several wood turners because my husband is thinking of maybe taking this up as a hobby. One question we have why does it seem that you have to sharpen your tools so often? Is that normal & the others just don't mention it or are you cutting harder woods?
Morning Ronda and thanks for getting in touch. We all generally sharpen up as much as each other and they just don't mention it. The cutting of the wood is done with not with the edge like a knife but with a burr on the edge of the blade which can dull quickly when turning hard woods. Thanks 😀
Boa noite LINDO trabalho parabéns sucesso
bom dia e obrigado novamente
How deep a recess do you cut on the base prior to reversing the bowl?
I do like the way the bowl turned out. Thanks for the instruction.
Hi William, a lot depends on the weight/size and balance but usually it's about 3-4mm. Thanks for watching ☺️
Really nice job Mike the wood looks beautiful, and the shape really shows off the wood, lovely finish to it as well. What shellac do you use??
I just use Rustins French polish, it's just pure shellac in a carrier liquid, works really well is is fairly inexpensive. Thanks Steve
Very beautiful personally can't stand the smell of iroko but well done
lol thanks Robert 😀
Hi Mike, How about we start a new CZcams channel? Simple title.... "Linguam Latinam causa lignarius." Or something like that! 😂
Haha sounds like a good idea
Hat should have been for the Dawn Redwood not ebony and iroko. Your attempts at the Latin name were hilarious mate. 😂
@@user-jim-kelly Haha thanks, I had to leave it in the end
