Germany to permanently station additional combat troops in Lithuania | DW News

  • German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on Monday announced plans to permanently station 4,000 soldiers in NATO ally Lithuania to help secure the alliance's eastern flank.
"Germany is ready to permanently station a robust brigade in Lithuania," Pistorius said during a visit to the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius. He said that facilities would first need to be built to accommodate the troops.
Germany already leads NATO's battlegroup in Lithuania, a reinforced battalion of some 1,000 troops. Vilnius has repeatedly called on Berlin to send combat troops in the country, which borders the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. Germany pledged in June, 2022, to have a full brigade ready to defend Lithuania in case of an attack.
Until now, however, Berlin had resisted permanently stationing most of the brigade in Lithuania, saying that the troops could be rapidly deployed from bases in Germany. Currently, only the brigade's command post with about 20 German soldiers are in Rukla, Lithuania. The rest remain at various locations within Germany.

There's something of historical irony about it again. In one year, Putin managed to do what a whole community of states (EU) has not been able to do for years due to various disputes... everyone agrees! Putin has acted as a catalyst in many fields, just not in the way he hoped. Instead of hopelessly destabilizing NATO and Europe (EU), they have been reminded of the values they share and the value of working together. There will always be disputes and differences of opinion, they exist in every good family, the important thing is what comes out at the end of the day. However, this is a concept which atocrats and dictators do not understand. As a German, I wish the Lithuanians and the entire Baltic region a long period of peace and prosperity. Should Putin cross borders, he will realize how powerful NATO and Europe are.

As an (expat) German and reservist, I'm heartened reading so many positive responses from Lithuanians. Germany is (understandably) still struggling with its WW2 history and this has handicapped military capability for decades, but I've always been of the opinion that the best path for redemption is to stand with its friends and allies, helping to defend them from aggression. Stronger together, for a brighter future.

@@KnipselBlitz I was referring to Germany's political and social environment with regards to supporting a military build-up, which is independent of what other EU member states do. The Bundeswehr used to be treated like an "unwelcome step child", at best tolerated but not really appreciated -- which has affected both recruitment and budgeting. In the current climate, this seems to be changing.
So maybe Putin is helping Germans get over a historical trauma, just like he's helping to make NATO stronger. Some Germans just need to realize that the best way to deal with their country's dark past is not to abandon responsibility with naive ultra-pacifism, but rather to help defend those in need alongside their allies.

Teasing our German friends aside, I am genuinely pleased to see Germany stepping up and behaving like a full, autonomous and responsible member of the western alliance. German territory is no longer on the front lines of defending NATO, but it speaks well of the Germans that they are sending troops to defend the Baltic countries -- the new NATO front lines.

They warned other NATO countries years ago not to become reliant on Russian gas as it could be weaponized but the Germans nor most of the EU listened.
