  • Nato has deployed unprecedented numbers of forces to Latvia, a reaction to fears of future Russian aggression against the Baltic states.
    Once part of the USSR, Latvia is now an independent country in the European Union, whose government has expressed staunch support for Ukraine.
    But its close cultural ties to Russia is causing concern for the Latvian government - more than a quarter of Latvia’s population identifies as Russian.

    He was waving Russian flag on the day which also celebrates occupation of Latvia and he knows that. And says here he sees it as a symbol of unity? These 2 play victims but they really are not. They obviously are pro Russain aggression and would probably be happy to see our Baltic countries to be occupied again. This is why some people might be angry at them not because of their nationality. These were really crocodile tears. BBC should do their research better before publishing stories about such delicate issues.

Propaganda is a very, very powerful tool (on _all_ sides), combined with how Putin did a lot of good stuff before turning into this monster that he is now, it's understandable why they believe what they do. I hope things get better and, sometime in the future, we all see eye to eye and know the full story of what goes on. Maybe then this "symbol of unity" can really be that, and people aren't sent to conquer their neighbouring countries for their Tsar anymore.

    • @Kaiodenic
      @Kaiodenic Před rokem

      @@basilmagnanimous7011 For sure, he did awful stuff, but the world didn't really react to it and aside from Chechnya and Georgia he was at least pretending to build relations rather than raising tensions with the wider world. It doesn't excuse what he did obviously, but the point is that, internationally, he more or less kept his head down and didn't derail Russia. It's comparable to the USA's invasions - I'm not saying that justifies it (and, obviously, Russia's treatment of Chechens was criminal compared to the USA's treatment of the citizens of the countries they invaded), just that it doesn't immediately derail a country internationally with how he handled it.
      And yeah the gas prices rose, but he also got rid of a leader who basically sold Russia out for all it was worth - if that person was still in power, Russia wouldn't see _any_ of the profits from those price increases. He also named a successor in the party and, outwardly, showed that he was ready to back off. It looked very much like someone who took over a shit situation and, while needlessly brutal, pulled his country out of a hole and was ready to leave and rest on his laurels, leaving his country to a more liberal leader. My own country, while not as friendly with Russia as we were with the EU, saw a relatively bright future ahead with Russia and a potential end to the centuries-long tensions. That alone has to mean something, right?
      But then he stayed in power, went after the free media more and more and crushed protests, started to threaten us instead of building ties, and now invaded a brother nation in much the same way he handled the Chechen crisis he inherited, except here it's he created the problem himself. I don't know what happened, maybe he always had awful ambitions and just put them in the future and now fears he won't achieve them before the end? Or maybe he always planned to build relations and then cut them off, for some reason. Maybe he didn't plan anything and just lose his senses.

But I think it's not unreasonable for Russians at home to not hate him given how the country was before him and how it became after he came into power, and how powerful propaganda can be. I mean for god's sake, people genuinely believe the world is flat after reading Facebook posts - it's far, far easier to convince them with government media that the country next door with a _slight_ history of Nazism is actually still full Nazis, and the big defensive alliance is actually there to attack them.

Lithuanian and Latvian are the sole survivors of the Baltic language group and Estonian belongs to Finno-Ugrian, they aren't Slavic. Their population weren't very big, around a million each. They ofcourse already contained sizeble Russian populations. The Sovjet Union conquered them again in 1945, this ofcourse led to an increase in the size of the Russian population, especially Latvia. At one stage close to 40 % of the population identfied as Russian. Many were placed in Latvia as part of the army and navy(Riga was an important port of the navy). With the collapse of the Sovjet Union the three regained their independence and there certainly was a backlash towards the Russians as the Latvians had experienced being second rate citizens themselves during the Russian occupation. With Putin's hostility the sense of isolation for the Russians has obviously increased.

    Always glossed over in news accounts of the Russian populations of all three countries is that the bulk of them were brought in after the 1940 invasions as part of Soviet russification doctrine while tens of thousands of Balts were executed and sent to the gulags. Where Russian was mandated as the official language. So the Russian speakers that refused to learn Latvian, Estonian or Lithuanian can move across the borders, not very far they're small countries, and embrace their ethnic brothers win win for everybody, we should be so lucky.
    During the Soviet occupation Riga had a majority population of Russians,. internal passports and government approval were needed to travel between cities.
    And the current population of Europe and else where needs to be reminded that the 3 Baltic countries were identified by the US as Captive Nations and the annexation by Soviets was not recognized. All had consulates in Washington DC, not quite governments in exile but representatives of the free Baltic republics.

    While I am sorry that these Russians were sent death threats, I think it was unwise for this boy to wave the flag of the agressor fasist state, during the conflict in Ukraine. Also, given the history of Russification and repression of Latvians by the Russians, waving this flag is only a sign of enmity. As a Pole, I totally understand the Latvians, although I don't support violence, I wish the Russians treated the country they live in with respect, and understood what their own country did to Latvia, and other Central and Eastern European countries. It would be the same as if he waved the Nazi flag. Both the Russians and the Germans treated our people with disrespect and imperialism. I think the main difference is just how many people in the US/UK were against those wars and learned about the awful things that their soldiers did. Contrast it to Russia - all Russians I've spoken to about this still say that Russia liberated places in WWII and never committed any atrocities. It's just not taught even all this time later, and that's absolutely inexcusable and evil when compared to what their country did, as it explains almost all the reasons for why countries try to move away from Russian influence - and so, makes absolutely all Russian claims of fearing this or expansion that invalid, because it's 100% all their own doing.

    The perspective of this video doesn't accurately display the situation in Latvia. It strongly implies that Russian-speaking minorities are living in some kind of fear from the Latvian-speaking majority.
    What should have been mentioned here is that anyone who expresses support for Ukraine or is a Ukrainian refugee showing their support for their country is being targeted by the pro-Russian minority with violence, abuse, and hate.
    You are yet to find one video where a Latvian-speaking national abuses Russian-speaking minority, but I promise you will find the opposite.
    As for the Russian flag-waving bloke, there are a few things you need to know before you can judge if this was adequate:
    1. Since Russian invasion of Ukraine it is against the law to display support, including Russian/Soviet symbolic, for Russian military aggression and war crimes in a public space;
    2. The "Victory Monument" has been a place of contradiction since I remember. It is, of course, a matter of perspective, but for the majority of Latvians, the monument goes by the name of "Occupation Monument" and it reminds us of the beginning of another 48 years of occupation and genocide after WW2 by the Soviet Union.
    People's lives were destroyed, families have broken apart, properties were nationalized, and tens of thousands of Latvians were murdered, expelled to Siberia in trains designed for animals to work camps, and much more.
    A law was passed recently that commissions the demolition of the monument this year.

My mom is also a staunch supporter of Ukraine and wants nothing to do with Russia. Your ethnicity is one thing, but waving the flag of a country that has invaded numerous peaceful neighbours is siding with an aggressor. And you should also learn the local language, which is not the case with many older Russians living in the Baltics. No one is barring you from speaking Russian with your friends or other ethnic Russians, but you should absolutely learn the local language. Living in a country for 30 years and not knowing the local language is complacent and disgraceful, and there are no excuses for it. So yes, Russians in the Baltics may feel uncomfortable now, but they're not oppressed in any way. If they expect Estonians, Latvians, and Lithuanians to stay silent when they wave around the flag of Russia or support the the Ruzzian regime, that is not going to happen. The Nazis came in 1941 (in 1939 they occupied only the Klaipėda region) and occupied Lithuania after the Soviet occupation, and one reason why local people cooperated with them more willingly than with the Soviets is that the Nazis treated Lithuanians much less harshly than the Soviets. This is complacency and disrespect. Even in European countries with a high proportion of the population speaking English as a second language, you will be frowned upon if you live in a country for a long period of time and don't know at least the basics of the local language. It seems you haven’t yet realised what Putin means by demilitarisation, which is one of his key reasons for the conflict. Demilitarisation is accomplished by eliminating Ukraine’s military capabilities, not necessarily by taking huge swathes of land. Russia’s strategy is to eliminate the professional army, with around 30-35 battalions trained by NATO, and to eliminate the materiel supplied to Ukraine. The leaked Ukrainian documents last week confirmed 80% of Ukraine’s initial 200,000 professional force are either dead or incapacitated and unable to return to the front. Ukraine did not dispute the authenticity of the leaked documents or the figures quoted. That’s why civilians are being “trained” in the UK…shopkeepers and web designers are no match for artillery, and this is criminally irresponsible of the UK to provide such “support”. As for destruction of equipment and facilities, all NATO training bases have been eliminated (hence the need to “train” civilians offshore), the howitzers and Caesar’s have had no material impact and the majority have been destroyed already (indeed even the NYT has run articles noting that only 30% of weapons shipments make the front line due to corruption and destruction), and there is evidence that 7 of the 16 HIMARS have been destroyed, corroborated by satellite imagery and data showing a significant decline in the use of artillery by Ukraine. Don’t naively assume Russia is failing purely on the basis of territory seized, because since phase 2 commenced Russia has pursued a war of attrition and the main objective is the demilitarisation of Ukraine - it has been very successful at this. When Ukrainian resistance has been ground down sufficiently Russia will take territory, and as we are already seeing significantly reduced supply of weapons and munitions from the US due to their own well documented supply constraints (again reported in both NYT and Washington Post) the time when Ukraine is effectively demilitarised is looming closer. These are the private fears of the intelligence community. Russia is in no hurry, the slower the better, and the recent reliance by Ukraine on pinpoint attacks by small drones on Russian ammunition depots merely highlights that their resistance has been severely depleted.
