Ace Combat 7 Switch Review

- A Lifetime ago, I was an airman in the RAAF, and I was responsible for 8 downed aircraft during operations in the Middle East. Yes, I was considered the worst aviation mechanic in the Air Force. I joke of course, and for legal reasons, I’m unable to discuss my time there, but I can say there was nothing quite like marching along with an F111 tearing through the sky overhead to make you feel ten-foot-tall and bulletproof. Ace Combat looks to get your boots off the ground and into the cockpit of some amazing aircraft, promising tight dogfights and a gripping story. What’s it Like? Put on some Kenny Loggins, get cleared for take-off, and let’s take the highway to the danger zone as we review Ace Combat 7 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch.
- Hry
Didn't saw that one coming. Although I would've preferred the rumoured Star Fox Assault remaster instead. (was originally released by Namco / Bandai Namco now)
Price is too high for me as I already own it for a dirty cheap price on the PSN.
But this looks overall so fantastic on Switch can't wait to see it on the OLED screen once it hits a sale.
Great review much appreciated.
Thank you! Yeah, it's a hard sell if you already have it but crazy how they managed to get it to look and perform like it does!
Thanks for the review. In disbelief they were able to bring over everything almost flawlessly, and only taking up 14 GBs of space! Now just gotta decide when to get it..
Yeah its an exceptional port. There was pretty much only one mission that had slowdown
@@whatsitlikeaufor sure! Hoping for a Digitalfoundry breakdown at some point. This port feels almost too good to be true
I’m getting it pay day for sure
A fantastic game and port. It is rarely I'm this satisfied with a game purchase at this price tag.
If you enjoy skydiving in TotK, get this.
Yeah 100%. I paid full retail and regret nothing.
This was a "What's It Like" certified exceptional review, mate!
Seriously, I've been on the fence about this game for weeks. I love any type of flight game, but am admittedly not the greatest at intense aerial combat. My spouse has played this on another platform, and remembers some of the levels being rather challenging, so I may or may not be up to that challenge. I'm also a bit torn on the price. The base game's price seems fair enough, but the DLC adds up! That said, there's just something about this that makes me want to pick it up, and your review only increased that feeling. I may go for just the base game for now, and grab some DLC later on if the game gets its hooks into me.
Thanks for writing such a thorough review, and showing so much footage - all of which looked amazing. Your input is much appreciated.
Thank you so much! If it helps, the "Assist" mode controls should help with navigating the plane and there is a "VEasy mode" with is fairly forgiving, even bounces you back into the air if you hit the ground. I'm about to jump back online and see if I can redeem my terrible performance! If you have any questions about the game just let me know!
@@whatsitlikeau Thank you! I really appreciate the info on various assist options. That makes me feel a bit more confident, lol. Best of luck in your online battles!
I am currently playing the PC version of AC7, and it seems like they didn't really water down the graphics, which is a huge plus.
About the 30 FPS, the Switch itself actually is capable of 60fps at 1080p, because that is the extent of power for the Tegra X chip inside, however, Nintendo put performance restrictions on the chip even if you play in docked mode, to lower the battery consumption and heat production for the system, only way to unlock the full potential of the chip is to mod the Switch, which will go into the dangerous territory of getting your Switch banned by Nintendo if they catch you with a modded Switch online.
Yeah graphically, it really incredible how they've done it.
As for modded Switches, I won't touch that topic with a ten foot pole hahaha. I did hear of someone getting their console bricked and account banned for doing it though!
@@whatsitlikeau Yep, that's the risk for doing this. What this release made possible now is that I can maybe play AC7 on my phone with a Switch emulator for Android, this is safer as it is just single player only
Great review! I have the game already on ps4, though I never had the time to sit down and finish it. Kinda tempted to getting on switch to play on the go :D
I have it on Xbox but there's something so satisfying about playing while at the doctors or waiting for appointments. Sounds amazing with headphones!
Great review! They did an awesome job with this one!
Thank you! Yes, it's fantastic and I'm now falling behind on deadlines cause I can't stop playing it hahahaa
I often listen to the soundtrack, which is superb with some incredible tracks. This was great on my PS4 - looks like a must buy for my Switch.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I am. I'm taking today off to try to unlock all the aircraft hahaha
Must buy on switch if youre an ace combat lover, i rate it, been an ace combat fan for more than 20 years, its awesome
100% agree. I played an offensive amount of hours of AC7 this weekend!
Did the music in the game sound like it had been compressed to fit on the cartridge? I've noticed this being done a few times with more ambitious games on the platform, like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2.
It's most likely compressed but it doesn't sound muffled in my opinion. I played on a TV and handheld with decent headphones and it sounded great
darksouls is one example, soo bad compared to other platforms, nothing about graphics, but bad frametime, simplified ragdolls physics and worse sounf I heard on switch, sadly compressed :/
I almost picked up Dark Souls on Switch so sounds like I have dodged a bullet!
The physical version of this seems to have only come out in japan and the UK. The pal region copies that were available on my countries amazon (canada) and the local specialty video game store sold out so fast. I'll probably get it on another platform if i cant get the physical.
We got it here in Aus but my local only had one copy and it came out a day after the digital release for some reason? I can email Bandai Namco and see if I can get some answers if there's going to be a restock if that helps?
@@whatsitlikeau wow thank you. i didnt even think of that. Seems its another case of North America not getting a physical release for some reason. 🤔
Nintendo stepping into a zone of danger
LAAANAA
No danger on this one IMO!
Hi @What’sItLike. Can you please confirm if motion controls are available on Switch? Thanks!
No motion controls sorry. Just assist mode and expert mode
Played it on ps4, huge fan of ace combat series and stunned to get it on the switch....but NOT for that kind of money, I'd rather wait for sale, those 60 bucks are for hardcore fans.
That's a fair call. I already own it on Xbox but purchased this for review and have 0 regrets. Still playing it at the moment to track down enemy aces!
All the reviews I've seen so far seem to imply a lot of cut scenes. Are they skippable?
All are skippable, they don't go on forever though, maybe 2-3 minutes at a time and the story is quite interesting.
Im playing in VR on PlaystationVR PS4PRO and SteamVR using UEVR
Ace Combat in VR would be mind blowing! Is it good?
@@whatsitlikeau on PlaystationVR its only 3 missions but runs smooth but the resolution is 1080p 120hz on SteamVR im using UEVR to Virtual Reality all the mission on my PC it runs at 90hz 1632p resolution but not as smooth as PlaystationVR but looks beautiful on PCVR...
Hey bro what year did you get out of the military and what years were you in if you do not mind me asking ?
I'm unable to say sorry just for legal reasons. I can say I'm not classified as a veteran and I was fortunate enough to continue working alongside the ADF for a long time after I was discharged in a civilian support role campaigning for better transition out of defense programs and PTSD support.
@@whatsitlikeau No problem . I play ace combat 7 on my steamdeck and pc and great video tho !
What's it like on Steam Deck?
@@whatsitlikeau 40FPS in medium setting runs great !
Thats good to know, one of my mates has a steam deck and was interested. Thanks for letting me know!
A while back I was on an Iron Eagle kick and this game wasn't out on Switch yet, so I bought Sky Gamblers Air Supremacy 2 instead. Now I just finally saw Top Gun Maverick and kind of want to get this...
I watched Top Gun last night while playing this hahah!
@@whatsitlikeau I went ahead and bought it, it's freaking awesome. I had to re-do the first stealth mission because I didn't realize checkpoints disappear when you quit a mission. When I was flying through the clouds a second time, I found myself saying "talk to me, Goose."
So good!
Is the multiplayer active or dead on the Switch?
Been playing a little this weekend. Haven't had to wait for a lobby. There are a few hardcore players that dominate the space, but you can start your own lobby and set upgrade restrictions. I tested on Launch in Aus and we got it a day early, I think the game has now released Globally now so a larger player pool.
@@whatsitlikeau AS vet AC player, love the restrictions on so it actually put your skill to a test. It's awesome.
@rackclo yeah was a different experience! Really enjoyed the way they handle multiplayer!
@@whatsitlikeau The only down part is, wish to have Co-op mission like AC6 did. A Band of brothers head in take out Mega weaponry. Fly through bullet storm was Epic.
@rackclo that would be incredible! I never got to play coop on fires of liberation
I would love to buy it but its difficult to trust people on bandai namco ports.
For instance, ni no kuni 2 was a complete mess but nobody says it. They only said there was some serious framedrops on the map while the full game is ugly like hell (no AA with resolution below 480p) and combats are unplayable imo.
Klonoa also was disappointing. Baten kaitos too. Both games have constant stutters that ruin the experience.
If it helps, this is all footage I captured on the game myself, and there's really only one mission where the frames drop and even then its negligible. I'm yet to play Ni no Kuni 2, but this title is almost a pixel perfect port. Hope that helps!
I also want to add, that this isn't a review copy, I paid for it myself. If I receive a review copy, I say that when I deliver the final score. Hope that helps!
Its a good port. Framedrops haven't bothered me once yet, and Im on mission 13.
I had a slight hickup at the Arsenal Bird but that was nothing really.
@@Bajso84 My frame drops were on the mission where you sink platforms on the ocean. Only really dropped if I was in the thick of it though.
