Hey from Maine. Excellent information. I am a firewood guy so I'm no pro. While I have learned some of what you're showing us over the years (30 years egad), you brought it full circle to me. Bad filing habits, chain tooth size, the gullet, flipping the bar, So much great info. Always great to see you and Hogan collaborate.
ive found that when sprockets get worn out it can make the saw cut like its filed funny, especially in our eastern hardwood, not so easy to tell in bolsom and fir but definitely still can especially in big stuff.
Thank you for your kind word's and sharing your experience with other's on youtube or out and about with Family & Friends , I have learnt a lot since Subscribing to your Channel , it's been around 45 year's since I worked in the Aussie Bush ( Pineus radiata Forest's ) ,but I still do woodworking of a different type in making Static Model's of WW2 Propeller Powered Aircraft . anyway's i have to finish doing my domestic chores then head back out to the back shed to finish off repairing one of my model's and give it back to the family friend i gave it to , so to you & your's have a pleasant night / day in Canada . oh by the way Happy Birthday to your son Hogan & may he have an Awesome one !!
Thats nice! I find that I file harder when the bar is to the right and lighter when the bar is facing left, I end up with one set of teeth filed to the bone and the others with a lot left on them. I flip the bar each time I take it off to do a clean out and file and it seems to stay true. Thanks Mr Buckin. Be kind!
Hello from Western PA .... love your videos.... been logging for 15 year's took me about 6 years to figure out the sharpening still learning new things every year ... So glad there are people like you and iron horse..... Showing people the correct way to do things .... You are spot-on about sharpening techniques....One other thing I have ran into before ..... That can make a saw cut to one side is when the bearing is getting worn in the tip on your bar and it hasn't blown out yet , but is starting to get play back and forth . That will make your saw cut to one side or the other or bind up a little bit when you have the whole bar buried in a log and it can make you doubt your sharpening abilities for a little bit , until you change the tip and realize the chain has been right the whole time .
If you want to learn sharpening, try docking aged Aussie Iron Bark Eucalypt. Six two foot rounds and the chain is stuffed. You can't even drive nails into the stuff - you need to drill first. Dropping trees is OK, it's green. Once it's aged it's like sawing brass.
Hi! I just got a pre 73 pro Mac 10 10 because I have a couple great friends. They’ve been sending me your videos and I subscribed today and got to looking for sharpening tips and here I am 🙂 Great videos, thank you!
great advice, what about the different angles? even the cheaper chain sharpeners dont grind the exact angle from rt hand to left hand cutters, any advice there?
I been experimenting on filing. I can hand file but I find it easier to grind with my grinder when I get home. Faster than stopping and filing in the field. Thanks Bucking
is there a raker guide that gives you more raker? seems like the raker gauge is not enough raker space. so then i start freehanding the raker, 'just a file stroke each'. would be great to have a .070" or 080" raker gauge.
What if say my saw only has dog's on the power head side say like an stihl 039 or 260 like a woodboss home owners saw ? Would that make it cut on a angle
some very good info on this video, i take my chains to the local saw shop automatic machine re grind not expensive using a vintage stihl 08s thanks billy ray.
Awesome video mate love how enthusiastic you are with everything keep it up! and some good pointers for people. I learnt by trial and error I started with power saws back when I was a young lad learnt some good stuff from some old pros as welp but even though I learnt what they had to tell me I still tryed different things to get my own experience as well. Keep up the awesome stuff you do and a happy birthday to your boy and your mum keep well and stay safe from Australia
Billy i would just like to say u do truely care about everyone a show it u do know your talking about i appreciate u taking the time to make these video's an educate everyone ive learned alot ty
Hello Buckin congrats to your son and mum this day. I have a question what the size of the bar you run on the 266XP and when you are in the woods do you run a skip chain or a normal one. another question is about the size of the cilinder on the 266 is it still 66 cc or is the bore bigger. it runs glorious. thanks for the content every day its really interesting. Greets from Holland Frank
Happy birthday Mama Buckin and Hogan. Hope you two great people had a great day😊. Oh that Ironhorse, what a saw he can build,,,,what a guy. Thanks for the another great video Buckin 👍✊
I run Bobby's mobile lawn mower repair I feel I am pretty good at what I do but doing chainsaw chains and bars have never been to good now you just tap the gas your cutting GOOD. Thank you your videos taught me. I get good straight cuts too.
Hi I need advice on a good splitting axe.I cut my own firewood n use a wedge n mini sledge to split. I use a heavy maul that’s very cumbersome, but no good axe. Thanks buddy u r awesome.
your the only one who teaches how to correct issues I have had a 20 inch firewood saw chain for several years its missing a tooth ive hit rocks i do not use the electric chain eating sharpeners yes its easier/faster to use but it actually cost you more because if you can sharpen a chain correct you can cut far more wood between sharpening i use a hand file/raker gauge with buckins teaching and others as well i save time cutting gullets by using a dremel or the electric sharpener but i only use them to "clean the chain up" but file for cutters and rakers/guides bar maintenance is critical as well but most sharpening can be a few file strokes and your back to cutting it takes longer on an electric/retail grinder because you have to take the chain off where a quick file sharpen a few times before total bar/chain maintenance or "clean up" is required to take guides/rakers down fix chipped teeth/gullet bar rail reconditioning I can cut twice as much wood as my neighbor because of hand filing he goes though chains like TP using an electric sharpener
HEY Billy, GREAT CHANNEL !!!! Thank you for all you do and share with us, your a great woodsman, instructor and entertainer. Hey friend, could you do a review on chains and bars and how best to pair them with the cc's and power of different saws. Thanks Friend
It’s 8:30pm and you guessed right my 2 year old Ezra picked to watch Buckin yet again. He’s a bit under the weather and we’re giving him some meds with a nebulizer he doesn’t mind it except when we do it at bedtime. I think it’s because it’s hard to hear CZcams over the nebulizer. He truly loves watching this channel and we are so blessed. Thank you Buckin Sir
Buckin' went out to an estate auction last week and bought two McCulloch chainsaw, don't even know what size they are, been a little busy. You inspire me man. Keep it up. From western part of Kentucky
Thank you so very much. Yes enjoy the journey. Just got a Husqvarna 371xp running first big real saw it's used saved it from the trash. It's running sound awesome and tommarow I put it to the test on white oak. Thanks again on the chain sharpening tips. O ya it's a 28 bar,
Hi Billy , Happy birthday to Hogan and your Mum and i hope they have a great day. Your Mum is some kind of star and Hogan is fast becoming a fine man . Please wish them well from me . Welcome to all new subs . . Where kindness is , compassion follows folks and its good to have y'all here. Peace and Love from across the pond as always
Early in my days of cutting as well, big struggles with pulling. I knew it was a combination of filing and bar condition, also chain tension ( too tight of chain no bueno ) but what I found most interesting here was the conclusion drawn with cutter height! I would get out my calipers and inspect each cutter and file em true; keeping them precisely the same length across the cutter! Glad I can omit that variable from the equation. Thanks Buckin. Wish I’d seen this video years ago!
Congrats to Hogan and your mum! I'm an occasional sawer but I love it when I do! I file free hand and I started to notice the profile on my chisels are different. I'm a leftie so the right bank is spot on, but the corner on the left bank gets... weird. Just noticed it so I'm gonna keep at it!
Happy Birthday to Mom and to Hogan. I still love watching the channel and the awesome community here. Stay safe, and be kind to others. PS- it isn't much, but I posted a video on my channel today.
I don't know exactly why I watched your videos for the first time. I do, however, know why I keep coming back to watch more. You are a good kind person Billy Ray and I love your philosophy on life. Kindness will bring you peace and love and that is what makes for a happy world! You just can't buy the feeling kindness will bring you.
You are right on I had a chain that was cutting crooked and it was because I was better at sharpening one direction. I now take an extra stroke with my weak hand and haven't had a problem since. Thanks buckin! Get the gullet!
Yeah, Buckin'...I've gotten myself in the habit of using the Stihl two-in-one, which does fine...great even...but doesn't seem "organic" enough. Mike Morgan even said that he's preferring to hand-file. So, I got me some practicin' ta do!!!
Can you take a junk chain that’s done and sharpen one side and bump the other onto a stone or steel and dull/destroy one side of the chain and do another cut test
How does the sharpening compare with that electric sharpener V's the Oregon ones you would mount on a work bench. Acts kind of like a chop saw in operation.
Happy Birthday to your Mom and Hogan hope they have a great one and many more to come. Love your Videos keep them coming brother. How is your mom's album coming along? Keep being humble and kind to one another and have a blessed rest of your night.
Tree guys cut some white oak and ash trees in the yard and left them. I wanted to cut and split some firewood. I have a husky 240 that has been cutting heavy to the right. Tried filing the chain but I have no experience filing. It was cutting hard to the right and binding up bad. I thought it was my setup and Thought this was only happening to me using a saw till I youtubed and googled the problem. I went out and Bought a new bar and chain and it cut perfectly straight. Now I just have to learn how to properly file and sharpen the chains myself the correct way. Thanks for the tips.
Another great video. Happy Birthday Hogan. You gained gained another Instagram follower from me. Buckin and Hogan keep up the great work and keep finding solutions.
I’m a 30 year climber/arborist , this guy is the first person I have ever seen on You Tube that knows what he’s doing. 👍
And he shows you stuff as well which is good for people trying to get into climbing.
We see the chain's poor cuttin' and after the effect on the trunk...
Nicolas Gillet A sharp saw is Imperative, don’t forget those rakers! And plenty of bar oil. 👍
a tip: you can watch series on kaldrostream. Me and my gf have been using them for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Joel Gunner yea, have been watching on kaldrostream for since december myself =)
The only guy with a Phd. in power saws! Excellent and thank you.
Don't forget axes, trees and life haha
Ha!... Yeah!... Dr. Buckin, DPS
19.05 "Oh go away noisy dog" then fires the chainsaw up..lol classic!

We never stop learning new things. Thank you for the in depth look of what grinding and hand-filing a chain does. 🌲🌳🌿🌲
YOU ARE WELCOME GOOD SIR

Do you run all full comp chain or skip too for what do you use full comp for?
I run Bobby's mobile lawn mower repair I feel I am pretty good at what I do but doing chainsaw chains and bars have never been to good now you just tap the gas your cutting GOOD. Thank you your videos taught me. I get good straight cuts too.
thanks for the info . great video . I think that i am past half way through the pain now ! lol
Hi I need advice on a good splitting axe.I cut my own firewood n use a wedge n mini sledge to split. I use a heavy maul that’s very cumbersome, but no good axe. Thanks buddy u r awesome.
Hey buddy just wanted to tell you i absolutely love your videos i am new to your channel but will be a lifetime subscriber
Love the video, happy birthday Hogan!
your the only one who teaches how to correct issues I have had a 20 inch firewood saw chain for several years its missing a tooth ive hit rocks i do not use the electric chain eating sharpeners
yes its easier/faster to use but it actually cost you more because if you can sharpen a chain correct you can cut far more wood between sharpening i use a hand file/raker gauge with buckins teaching and others as well i save time cutting gullets by using a dremel or the electric sharpener but i only use them to "clean the chain up" but file for cutters and rakers/guides
bar maintenance is critical as well but most sharpening can be a few file strokes and your back to cutting it takes longer on an electric/retail grinder because you have to take the chain off where a quick file sharpen a few times before total bar/chain maintenance or "clean up" is required to take guides/rakers down fix chipped teeth/gullet bar rail reconditioning
I can cut twice as much wood as my neighbor because of hand filing he goes though chains like TP using an electric sharpener

Hey do you guys carry a rifle or pistol when your out in the deep brush? Just curious if you do and if you can?
Thank you brother , have a great Sunday !

Well, at least you have ear protection..lol
My gloves and safety glasses have saved me more than once.
Cheers mate and great info.
Happy B-Day Mama Buckin and Hogan!!! You guys are awesome!
My sons is today. He loves your videos as much as I do👍
How does the sharpening compare with that electric sharpener V's the Oregon ones you would mount on a work bench. Acts kind of like a chop saw in operation.
THE BENCH IS A ROUND GRIND ,, THE ONE I USE IS A SQUARE GRIND FASTER AND SMOOTHER
Happy Birthday to your Mom and Hogan hope they have a great one and many more to come. Love your Videos keep them coming brother. How is your mom's album coming along? Keep being humble and kind to one another and have a blessed rest of your night.
Happy belated birthday Hogan & momma Buckin'! Hope you two had a great day! Stay safe my friends!
Hellava birthday present! Many Happy Returns of the day Hogan!
Billy Ray Buckin I'm thinking of your back while your lifting that log. Enjoying your advice and instruction thankyou🇦🇺👍
I had one of the anti vibe bushings give up in a small saw gave it a angle cut
I notice on saws that only have 1 saw dog will sometimes cut on an angle when using the 1 dog because it puts a weird angled torque on the bar
Tree guys cut some white oak and ash trees in the yard and left them. I wanted to cut and split some firewood. I have a husky 240 that has been cutting heavy to the right. Tried filing the chain but I have no experience filing. It was cutting hard to the right and binding up bad. Holy crap brother you don't mess around when you pack your axes up. Very nice!
Another great video. Happy Birthday Hogan. You gained gained another Instagram follower from me. Buckin and Hogan keep up the great work and keep finding solutions.
