  • This is super fun....I love what I get to do. This one off album from BAND-MAIKO (BAND-MAID) is an exceptional song with fantastic renditions of some of their work.
It is a banger of a song in both forms and I can't hear the original without hearing the Maiko version in my head!
Please support BAND-MAID by visiting their site and watching their videos!
Thanks so much for the support, I couldn't do this without the Patrons!

imagine, you are an old boomer passionate about all kinds of music, when you were young you also had your own bands, where you played live, drums and keyboards, you composed songs with your friends, you played bad hard rock and even progressive, you also tried to sing, poop, your brother is a professional musician a great drummer, and teacher at the conservatory, your life is no longer in music, but music is always around you, listening to your old vinyls, many of your old friends who still work in music, as technicians or organizers, one day an old dear friend of yours arrives and tells you to leave immediately for London, you fear perplexed but follow your friend go to the 'airport and after a couple of hours between travel and preparations you are in London, your friend tells you to hurry up as soon as possible, you leave with a taxi and you arrive at a theater and you read that there are the Band Maid, and you say to your friend, me take you to london to see some fucking maids fucking!
Your friend who has always worked in the organization of musical concerts drags you through strange doors, outside the theater, there are many people, but you are led through narrow corridors and iron stairways.
At the end you enter the theater which is still half-empty, your friend takes you to the center in the front row one meter from the stage, where there is not even a barrier, you curious look at the instruments and the amplifiers, because you understand a little, and you look at the system and you notice small Jaz-like drums, almost a toy, but you see that the microphones are placed really well, you know it, then on your right you see a really strange and complicated guitar effects pedal.
Ask your friend what the stuff is? what do they play? who the fuck are these? the maids?
Your friend tells you, stay calm and wait, you are curious but also a little skeptical, the stage is small, the drum is small, on a guitar effects pedal there is a plush fish, what the fuck !!!
In about twenty minutes the theater was filled up, the lights went out and rock music started at a crazy volume, after a few minutes in the absolute darkness I hear and glimpse changes and feet darting under my nose and someone takes place at the instruments, the music at first seemed loud but now it is almost painful but absolutely crazy, a perfect storm of power and good music, what a fucking maid !!!
they start with Real existence...good ok, but after that, they kill me by "screaming" and I was in a mind confusion state.
even at this crazy volume in the front row, I could hear every single note, I was 2 or 3 meters from them, crazy, I could hear Saiki's direct voice, incredible!
my friend was yelling in my ears to be heard, and then saying what the fuck do you think of these maids?
I couldn't even answer I was overwhelmed by this crazy sound.
the following two evenings we were in Paris and then in Bochum in Germany. I do not remember how long we slept, I remember that I kept getting on and off planes and taxis tired and half-drunk.
For my friend, it was his normal business trip but I was exhausted but every time I just waited for these maids to start playing again and again.
One evening at the end of the concert we also went to see the Band-Maid after the concert, it was a really emotional sight, to see these young girls completely exhausted, sweaty, but happy to do what they love.
Misa with ice on the forearm (after playing all the notes of the galaxy for two hours this is the minimum) Saiki who can no longer speak or makes strange sounds like a frog, and rubs her throat with a metal object, Akane sweaty but apparently, and absurdly not tired, how is this possible I don't know, Kanami very sweaty but ready for another gig even now, Miku is crazy for her a gig is a starter, she could jump up and down the stage for a week still.
After 30 years, finally, the old emotions I felt with the super bands of the 70s and 80s, were unbelievable, I didn't hope for them anymore.

Here's a sentence for you, Ryan: The way they always change things up within the song, never repeating verse structure, and use 4 or 5 different riff, break, bridge and run ideas where each one could be the bases for its own song... all wrapped around a memorable chorus and multiple solos by different members while Saiki's vocals focus the experience into a cohesive force with Miku's lyrics and backups, makes Kanami and the gang genius songwriters -- and Kanami maybe even a musical savant.

The singing at the end of the studio/live...it's one of the few times where Miku signs the high part and Saiki takes the lower range....it's usually the other way around...just another example of how they aren't afraid to play around with anything...I swear...lol Wehn you relisten to some of the songs to, after a while you start noticing the little nuanced stuff like that with the vocals... There's another track where for just one ... line(?) ... Miku takes the lead by herself...but that's it! It's like the only time in any of their songs that she does that! So much fun....this band.... Oh, the maiko thing is great... You can kind of tell Miku is drawing a parallel between the maiko (traditional sense) and the maid (in the cafe sense...lol) The only other version I know of is the Live lie....And they just kill that...it'd be worth hunting down... I can't seem to find it now... There is another Maiko video but its another song...

This song is not what you expect at all based on the title (as you said) and Band Maid is not what you expect when you first hear them based on photos. Great reaction (as always). Funny tidbits: Kanami dropped her pick during the shoot and her geisha outfit was so stiff that she had to have someone pick it up for her. Also, there's a funny vid floating around somewhere that in one of the first scenes where they are sitting in a row, Misa suddenly starts cracking up after Akane apparently farts (Akane kept a straight face lol). Btw, in that part where you could only see and not hear Kanami's lead line, I think it actually was being played but is easy to miss: it's a wall of backsound sound like buzzing bees that I think you were referring to. Really enjoyed your reaction and can't wait for the next! (Btw, you might really enjoy reacting to Gion-cho, the only song specifically written for and performed by Band-Maiko. @@RyanMear The lyrics from Band-Maiko songs are in Kyoto dialect. Kyoto was the Japanese capital when geishas were really popular (19th century), so they held a lot of influence over powerful people in politics and military, simply because these people often fell in love with them. At that time and today it's the city with the most active geishas in Japan, especially in the entertainment district Gion (see Band-Maiko's song Gion-cho, translated simply to "Gion city"), which was basically ruled by them in those days.

I know that they're called "geiko" in Kyoto, but I didn't want to complicate it even more because "geisha" is what they are commonly known as in "the west". Thanks for explaining it in my stead ;). My knowledge about Gion comes from Wikipedia, so it's bound to be pretty shallow. There it's called "one of the most well-known geisha-districts in Japan", that's why I assumed it is/was the biggest in Kyoto.
And also thanks for the history, I knew about the Tokugawa and their ties to Edo, but I didn't know they "ruled" from Edo and I also didn't know the power was split to that degree between them and the Emperor. Especially because they were ones who basically rebuilt Kyoto in and after the Sengoku period, as far as I know at least. It's all pretty confusing if you want to delve deeper into the Sengoku period and what happened after if you didn't grow up with and learned about it in school (at least I think so). But, I don't think all that has anything to do with Band-Maiko or geishas/geiko 😂. ありがとうございます ;)

I know I cried the first time I heard it LIVE. :) There is so much going in this song its difficult to know where to begin. All I can really say is look up the translated lyrics and watch it again... or better if you can find either the Studio Coast Live version or the Zepp Tokyo Live version. It will change you. :)
Edit for Maiko - this was probably one of the most brilliant April Fools Jokes. When it dropped all of the members changed their names and profile pics on their social media. They went on TV talk shows as Band Maiko. They went full send and it was glorious. The song is really a remix by Kanami with new vocals by Miku and Saiki. Kanami added in the traditional instruments like the drums and shamisen. True story though, MISA really did record the "wolf howl" as she called it in some interviews. I'm sure its been mentioned but they're singing in a different dialect in this version so that's why the vocals were re-recorded.
Now you MUST watch Band-Maiko Gion-Cho. This was an all original song by Band-Maiko for April 1, 2019.

For example, MISA holds a shamisen and Akane holds a tsuzumi witch are used by maikos. Maiko is an apprentice geisha in Kyoto.
Kyoto was the ancient capital of Japan and is Miku's favorite place. She spends some time in the city every year in her free time.

You are corret, sir. The solo in this song is pretty much identical to the solo in Domination, but this song came first. But even given that, it's quite amazing. It shapes and morphs wonderfully as it goes. The ending bit where all the instruments drop out and it's just Saiki and the bass, stunning. I do prefer the "Secret Maiko Lips" version. It has a completely different feel to it and the layering of all the instruments is truly beautiful.
For a little bit of info on the Maiko one. A maiko is a geisha in training, who primarily focuses on entertaining. The words are different between the two songs because Miku changed the song from standard Japanese to the Kyoto dialect. Kyoto is the center of geisha in Japan, so she felt it fit the Maiko song better. The close up of Kanami is behind the fan, showing only her eyes, because she feels like her eyes are her best feature. Akane is the only one to eat the noodles when they stare down the viewer because she is a legendary eater. I guess you need more fuel when you beat the hell out of the drums the way she does.

April Fools.....this year it was Miku and her Cluppo "Love and Peace" tune. The Japanese lettering in the beginning where Miku is writing reads "World Domination" in Japanese. A Maiko is in a sense a Geisha apprentice. The "traditional" Japanese instruments you hear is actually Kanami and an engineer with synthesized sounds, like the Shamisen and flute. Hi, Ryan. It's a sharp and interesting observation as usual :)
By the way, many people use the word "geisha" in the comments, but in this MV, they play "maiko", so this area is Kyoto. In other words, you have to call them geiko, not geisha. Basically, "geisha" and "geiko" are the same thing, but only in Kyoto, they are called "geiko." In areas other than Kyoto, such as Tokyo, they are called "geisha."

    Ryan!
Greetings just when the sun is coming back after a grey drizzle morning. Talk of a coincidence! Serious!
Now, the second version all in Japanese traditional clothes, although some liberties were taken there. I watched the making of the video clip. Kanami at times times was bored to tears, Saiki wore a strange "modern traditional hairpiece" that was designed just for the sake of this video which had been obviously conceived for international promotion. I have lived here too long and I found it a bit cheap. I certainly understand Kanami's feelings.
On the positive side they came up with a traditional Japanese music back up that made it a new song. They mainly used shamisen/3-stringed kind of guitar, koto/Japanese harp, shakuhachi/Japanese recorder/flute and taiko/japanese drums. It reminded me sometimes of Wagakki Band who mix such instruments with their hard rock, although completely different!
    Best regards,
    Robert-Gilles

My first guess is two measures of 6/8 time with accents on 1 and 4, then a measure of 2/4, but somehow I already know I'm wrong - anyway, those offbeat accents really contrast nicely with the straight quadruple time of the chorus. Great job!. I think I prefer the Maiko version, making Secret My Lips (one of my favourites) bright in a next level. The intricacy that brings the traditional instrument layers gives a new perspective of the beauty of the songwriting, like watching a complex filigree in a picture or sculpture. Kanami wrote all these new lines of the digital traditional instruments and Miku rewrote the lyrics in Kansai Ben, Kioto´s dialect (the place where live Gheisas and Maikos). A great job that proves their ethics in work and their love for the music and culture. They published an EP in 2019 as Band Maiko with six covers of Band Maid songs and a new one only as Band Maiko, GionCho. I think you would like it. I consider Band Maiko as a side project rather than an aprils fools joke. They do a tremendous job adapting their music to Japanese culture by showing great respect for it. The videos are an art work of setting and clothing. For the occasion they also change their names (Hatoko, Fujiki, Akatsuki, Kanoemi and UMEMISA).
