Now let's be fair for a minute here, Colin never mislead Penelope to believe that she was anything else other than a good friend and that he values that friendship. You all realize they met really young, and Penelope developped a crush on him in her teens, and like anyone with a massive crush, you're hoping that the person will notice you beyond the title of just a good friend. I don't think Colin would have been ready for Penelope before now, he needed to get to a place of maturity to finally see a woman in Penelope and not just a good friend .

Colin is not obligated to return her feelings. He could have a little more awareness to realize her feelings and treat those feelings with more sensitivity, but he is also a bit immature still to this point in the series. He is not a bad person for regarding her as a close friend rather than a prospective partner if he does not return her feelings. If Penelope is tired of hoping he will return her feelings, it's on her to be honest with him about how their interactions affect her and put boundaries in place to protect herself. You don't get involuntarily friend-zoned; you allow yourself to be and remain there unless you make the decision to move on.

The issue is that with the show, it’s not just the fact that he rejected her, it’s that by laughing about it with his friends, he’s ruined any chance she may have had by finding a husband. That's even more sad and that's probably the reason why she's held on to her crush from calling for so long. The sad part is her being a wallflower because she never got proper love and attention from her mother. Colin not liking her is more of a side thing because he's not required to love her just because she likes him. Even in our fantasy world.

Eyebrow. I think you're pretty hard on Colin. He's a young man in the show. He's probably a few years out of the school room. In that time he's flirted and and smoozed because that's what a young handsome man does. In the books he's friendly with Pen and Felicity because they're often with his sisters, so much so that he admits he sees them as his sisters. Knowing that his treatment of Pen is relatively as he treats his two youngest sisters. When he leaves he goes onna trip by himself for the first time. That fact thar he's able to go out and get to know himself before he comes home to romance Pen actually indicates a maturity developing. Yes you can marry someone and not know yourself but it often leads to complications as you go. Pen and Colin both have to develop into people who have realistic expectations of each other and as partners in life.

I really don’t like how many villainize Colin for not noticing Penelope right away. I think they probably met when he was too young to really think of her in a romantic light, so she became his friend. And Penelope never told Colin she likes him, so why would he ever think she likes him. She has always been kind to him, and I do think he took her a little for granted. He never intentionally meant to hurt her. Sometimes people need a little wake up call to see what is in front of them. That is was this whole season is about, for both to see each other differently and have reached a maturity where they can be together.

Thats her personality, she sees all and though it hurts her shes not made a victim. And colin had always made a point to not flirt with pen in the books, and though knew she liked him, didnt want to hurt her.And I mean saying that to other gentlemen in public is AGREGIOUS, it was only to his brothers in the book, in their own home that she over heard him. She also made a point to let him know she was above being upset at him for it. They just changed the setting to make it a sticking point so we could get ANGRY PEN and GROVELING colin, which just wasnt the case. Colin was an absolute commanding hothead in the book.

I never understood this idea that Colin rejected and especially if it was based on bad intentions. Pen is primarily friends with his younger sister. The fact that he calls her Pen instead of Miss Featherington and writes her letters suggests that he sees her as a sister because those actions were taboo at the time except for family. When he said you didn't count he was saying you are the only woman I won't exclude. When he says would not court he because the thought is incestuous.
Overall I love how Shondaland's writing manipulates circumstances to make us feel a certain way that doesn't always match what is going on. ❤️

It's funny as the years (and seasons) went by, I found myself relating to Penelope more and more. Being the wallflower romantically, getting help to court other men by the man I actually love, being the the laughingstock of a huge group for a decade, a desire to fulfill my purpose in life but someone else is always making it impossible. Heavens, the list goes on... Anyway, after everything that has happened between Penelope and Colin so far, I don't think he is all that blind to her feelings. I just think he is being stubborn especially when he met Penelope at the stairs after seeing Marina. It was as if he was angry at the notion of romancing Penelope and her sort of bringing that conversation up just made him annoyed 😮

  • @sanasinnersanctum
    @sanasinnersanctum Před 13 dny +5

You're being way too hard on him. With the exception of what he said at the Featherington ball about never courting Penelope (a more dramatic change from the books), he has never intentionally tried to hurt her. He's a good guy, just clueless. Hence Penelope's unfortunate predicament as the wallflower that she is.
And some guys can be clueless, that doesn't mean he should be given the riot act. And he doesn't have to apologize if he doesnt reciprocate her feelings. He doesnt owe her that.
Penelope shares some of the blame as well because as Eloise points out in their fight, she never stands up for herself. She never really puts herself out there with Colin either. She always plays it safe. She's lacking confidence. That's not her fault either.
But during one of their many interactions, for example, his gaze lingers on her, but she breaks it and turns away, not him. So even if there was a potential inkling of reciprocation on his part, she never gives him clear signals that she was interested in him romantically. From his perspective, he could easily think she sees him as a friend and given how supportive and encouraging she has been of him, I can see him not wanting to jeopardize that.
I think he does already love Pen, but in a platonic way, pre S3. Scandal doesn't occur to him because she's like family. When he's saying shes special or she doesn't count (as a woman who will break his heart) or dancing with another girl, after complimenting Pen, he's not trying to be manipulative. He's not trying to be rude. He's trying to show his appreciation for her in an albeit clumsy way that unfortunately leaves Penelope heartbroken. But that is not his fault, again with exception to what he said to the guys - that was just mean and I hate how they changed that from the book version, amongst other things.
Yes, he hurt her, and Eloise hurt her, but she also hurt them via Lady Whistledown and while I was concerned about the overly dramatic changes compared to the books, I'm sure it'll all come together nicely in S3. Do I want to see him grovel and be jealous? Of course, but because of what he said at that ball, not because he's been oblivious of her feelings towards him. People are so obsessed with Penelope's feelings and insecurities, that they fail to really see him and his insecurities. This wasnt even my go-to couple (Kanthony fan) and I really wanted to see Benedicts story. But the more Ive thought about it, rewatching their scenes separately and together, the more Ive become a Polin fan. And from the teasers for S3, it seems like all these issues will be addressed. Im looking forward to it.

I think this season will be full of surprises when it comes to Colin, and even Penelope. We cant be so hard on Colin seeing as he truly never mislead Penelope and did see her as his friend. He should not have said what he said to fife and the guys..but from what we are seeing...i dont think she plans on letting him off the hook right away so easily. Colin will start seeing Penelope in a new light as the season goes on, and as they spend more time together. Theyve always considered each other friends but from what i saw..not close friends. She was Eloises best friend..now we get to see these two spending time together when before it was dances and a few conversations...i ship these two...in real life, people make mistakes..so we cant burn Colin (a fictional character) at the stake for being a stupid guy who said a stupid thing at the time. I am so ready and rooting for them this season

I so want her to actually end up with Lord Debling instead. He seems kind, from the limited footage so far they seem to enjoy spending time together, he's finally letting her actually talk instead of just talking about himself like Colin, and I just know he is going to be head over heels for her from the start. I truly believe he will be the first to notice her wit, strength and beauty. Doesn't help that Colin had so far been just an arrogant, self-centered, ignorant prick. I truly think Debling will be a far better match for her, though I'm aware Colin and Pen are most likely going to end up together anyway, for all the dumbest reasons of course (and they'll have to include a heavy amount of embellishment and sparkle if they want to make me believe it to actually be a good match---no, by that I don't mean Colin getting abs...).

some people truly don't get that Colin not reciprocating her feelings straight away isn't a moral failure on his part, he either didn't realise her feelings or didn't want to hurt her and lose her as a friend by talking about it. he's been kind and affectionate with her, and now he regrets saying those words to those men because he knows that as a good friend he shouldn't have done that.
colin hasn't rejected penelope per se, he just hasn't acknowledged her as a woman he would considering marrying because his long time friend and his sister's best friend, plus it just never occurred to him. once he Sees pen for everything she is, he will never want to stay away from her again. he's Colin "Miss. My. Wife" Bridgerton, after all.

I love her character and as many have already said, it isn't his fault for not noticing and as much as Penelope's responsibility to express her feelings. However, even when she expresses the fact that she is a woman, and Colin corrected her and said," You are are Pen, and you are my friend." That was her scared way of trying to express her feelings. Let's be honest, Colin wasn't attracted to her. We know what it's like to be attracted to someone and they not notice, but we also know what it's like to be friends with someone and we grow an attraction to them with time. To me it's simple, he wasn't attracted and loved their friendship so to fathom anything outside of that wasn't an option for him as it was for her. As soon as someone else showed interest, it opened his eyes as her being an option when another man saw her as a beautiful person in and out. Losing her to another man scared him and woke him up. People do this, they may not want you until someone else sees your value and does. For that very reason no matter how much she loved Colin, Debbling saw her and didn't need long to see her value and you be a better choice. I refuse to think Colin didn't know, I think he didn't want to see it and feed into it if he wasn't in to her that way. Of course, we all want a happy long awaited ending between the pair. I just can't help but still think; poor Penelope, you still are only chosen out of jealousy even if there is some love there. Imagine her life with the Lord Debbling who saw her for her.

It's ironic that Colin said that he started a real conversation with someone. In the Regency era that would have meant that he had started an affair! Criminal conversion meant adultery. Ironically, saying that you had intercourse with someone would have meant that you had had a conversation or some other form of social activity with someone.

..know it's not up to her to find his glasses; his eyes must adjust and he must find her; in order for his labor to be branded and ever lasting towards her.. Otherwise he'll go alone to get along.. But if and when Colin finds Pen 🖊️ they'll have a chance..if neither of them allows emotions to sail into unhealthy darkness🌑 but let's just wait and see👀
Up until last storyline Colin wasn't assuming anything about Pen's feelings he didn't know..neither was Colin Intentionally hurting his dear friend because of it.. I get it..
His dear friend Penn was hurting because her emotions toward Colin had ventured beyond just supportive pals.. While Colin was busy being himself and figuring his life's likes in the comfort of his real friend.. I really get it.. Whoever wrote this article is conflating Colin's obliviousness with rejection. The truth is that Colin has repressed feelings and is still hurt from Marina's ordeal. He doesn't really understand the closeness he has with Pen beyond friendship--he can't reconcile his restlessness that's why he always travels. He doesn't realize it's love and not just friendship. He went out of his way to publicly defend and protect Pen against Cressida and her scam-artist cousin. But he grew careless the minute the other gentleman point out his attentions to Pen because he needs her to stay the same. This is textbook denial and negging behavior. He's a popular suitor with a house full of siblings, yet Pen's the only one who answers his letters when he's away? He is lonely and desperate to be seen as a grown-up that's why he fell so hard and fast for Marina. He needs Pen to remain his uncomplicated childhood friend because it has defined much of his life and he depends on her emotional support.

The thing about him saying he would never court her is that I think he is the one so insecure about himself that he thinks he doesn't deserve someone like her. a lot of this is 2 people feeling so down on themself's that they think they don't deserve whats right in front of them. Eloise said it best when talking down Benedict in season1. Lady Whistledown is a women and therefore has nothing, and still she wrights. Collin travel's because he wants to run away from everything, and he doesn't believe he belongs in London. with all the debutants. He has already seen Pen that way so he thinks she's too good for him. Penn gets downplayed a lot because of all the things her mother says and does about her, so she probably thinks the worst already.
