    Do you like the look of this vertical siding or horizontal siding?

  • @McCoyFamilyFarm

    Great vid! Just one suggestion...the siding shouldn't rest on the bottom J channel. You should have a small gap to allow for expansion and this helps avoid oil canning. Learned this from my cousin who had to learn this the hard way.

    I am retired now but installed a lot of siding in the past. You covered the instalation well. I would only add that if there is a question on whether the siding is snapped in or not try moving the piece in question up and down. If you can't move it a little it is not locked in.

    Great video, and I learned a lot. I have a question, though. When you nail the undersill trim to the inside corner, you are passing the nail through a solid part of the inside corner and so it won't be able to expand/contract.

    The color looks good and i love the way it looks, we're starting to see more of that style here in Canada. The installation is very much different here , the construction code would not allow you to nail the siding directly on the structure. A gap is needed with a piece of wood between the final structure and your siding allowing humidity to circulate. Rust might attack your nails , those going through your walls and isolation causing humidity and water infiltration over time. Keep a eye on the outside walls with concrete basement at the bottom, vertical rust lines are indication of water infiltration behind your siding.

    These vertical siding videos are outstanding. They seem to be the most detailed instructions on the web. What supports the weight of the siding? Is it the J channel at the bottom or do you put one of the nails at the top of the nail slot?

    • @TheExcellentLaborer
      @TheExcellentLaborer  Před 2 lety

      The siding weight is held by the deck and the nails help it from falling off. If that makes sense. Nail in the middle of the nailing slot.

    Okay question so we are installing it ourself on our double wide it’s staring to dent in on some pieces only on some the vinyl creates dents and it’s not nailed tight. Also the vinyl is only so tall it doesn’t reach the top of the trailer. We had to do a transition strip like an H trim piece but worried about it leaking into it.

    Hi, thanks for the videos. I have a question and I haven't seen it on any of your videos. There are a couple of locations in my house for the AC disconnect and water spigot. They cut the hole and put the trim piece, but it doesn't sit flush against the wall because the opening is right on one of the ribs of the siding. Should I just cut the siding so the trim goes all the way back?
    I really don't like the gap, also I worry that water might get in.
    Thanks

    are you able to have one side of the house horizontal, and then another wall vertical? might be a nice way to reduce overlap pieces to make the house look a bit nicer. for example two of my exterior walls are 38ft length, so making those vertical would make it nicer I would think because removing overlap.
