Congress needs to change US asylum law so that applications for asylum must be made from a US embassy or consulate in a foreign country. Then detain every asylum seeker and send them where they came from to apply for asylum. But first explain to them that looking for a job or a better life or running from crime is not a valid reason the US grants asylum.

They wanted to be looked after and then continue their journey to the USA. The situation is so bad this year that the government had to cancel the possibility of giving refugee status to Afghanistan. But this week especially it is very bad. We have now 200.000 refugee applicants and the vast majority is trying to use us as pitstop to get there. You are clearly sending a message of PLEASE COME HERE. It is people from all over the world that is trying to get there and it has never been this bad.

@@mr.factoid105 one thing that I can tell you is that we see them on TV in New York being placed at 5 star hotels. And this is a very unusual and luxurious treatment for a refugee. And many if not most are coming from South America, they arrive with a tourist visa or as refugees to Colombia, Ecuador or my country Brazil and then head there. I work at the airport and it is very disrupting for us. It is also fueling organized crime and human trafficking because they pay criminals to get there.

We can't build detention centers fast enough so they get turned out onto the streets and cities tried treating them like the rest of the homeless population. Families are also tough because people don't like seeing children suffer.

Brazil is free to deny asylum applications to anyone who does not have a reason and proof in conformance of the UN Convention on the Status of Refugees (1951) and the follow-on Protocol (1967). The reasons are limited. Looking for a better life or a job or running from crime are not valid reasons to ask for or grant asylum under that treaty. The US has been far too lax in sticking to the intent of the treaty.

Well, if you thought the federal government would have any power to remove or deport them. You’re wrong!!! There’s loopholes in the system which allow them to remain in the country. It’s very simple, it’s called "sponsorships". Anyone helping them out with getting housing or work literally becomes a sponsor to them and in return, the benefited migrants under that sponsorship would have to pay the sponsor back in a matter of time. This is nothing new. It’s been happening for two decades now.

I came there legally... few years in the snowbelt in Ohio and I came back to New Zealand.
