We needed an auxiliary engine for our Johnson Evinrude 15 HP 2 stroke, which is the main engine on our AB 2.8... so we went for a Honda 2.3 HP four-stroke.
See the servicing, repair and wintering video blog of our 15HP 2 Stroke here: • Outboard Servicing, Re...
The reasons we went for this particular outboard was it was very light (13.5 kilograms), which makes it easier to get on and off the boat. It's also easy to maintain, there's no impeller to change and it's only got one cylinder.
It's air cooled as well which means there's no raw water cooling system to deal with, it's very fuel efficient and has an integral fuel tank. The other reason we went for this particular model is because we thought it would be easy for the kids to handle because it's small and easy to manoeuvre.
So in this video, I give it a full service and winterise it. I take apart the carburettor and give it a good internal clean and change the engine and gearbox oils.
If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice on servicing outboards, then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos.

Yay a real comment section! :)
I know, it's like suddenly being released from 'cancel culture' prison!
One can invert the outboard to drain it. I drained and flushed my tank as it had junk in it. I put the top gearbox plug in first. Thx for the video.
I have several honda outboards, not this model, and never see rust on anything. There are several videos on this 2.3 hp outboard and all of them show rust in the carburetor, on bolts and many of the metal surfaces. Nobody seems to be concerned that the engine is rusting. As if rust on a marine engine is normal??? A Chinese made 2.5 hp engine can be purchased on Amazon for less than $300. But this honda is more than a grand. Honestly, I think this engine is the same quality as the Chinese amazon engines. You seem to be happy with the engine.
Sadly I have to agree. After 7 years of fairly heavy use I had to finally ditch the Honda. There was a big oil leak from somewhere below the powerhead and the shaft spline had seised with rust and wouldn't budge. I'd already replaced the carb because of rust but there were a few other maintenance issues that I just didn't have the tools or time to fix before leaving Australia so sadly it had to go :/
Oil leaking in the river I found the o.h.v. had rusted hole in it lucky it was not worse
I am very tempted to try electric outboards after watching your experiences with gas outboards.
I keep looking at electric outboards . They’re fine to get to the beach and back and are much simpler, cleaner and easier to maintain but the power and range just doesn’t match up to petrol power yet. Although battery technology is improving all the time so in a few years I hope they will prove a viable alternative to the noisy gas guzzlers of today.
A very useful video, thanks. What I don't understand is why mine took 0.6l of engine oil. It is just above the middle line in the sight glass but I thought they must have changed something regarding the outboard, but my manual also states 0.25l. Anyone any clues?
Glad it helped
I have a Honda 2hk outboard but my cerifigalclutch engaged at all times how do I fix it.
Is this engine water cooled or air cooled
This is an air-cooled engine
