- Bandit 1200 Mods Have Begun! Painting the Side Covers! The stock airbox covers are chrome from the factory and I have never been a fan of how they looked. To kick off the modifications for this bike I am starting with this simple project which is painting the covers for a cleaner look.
Stay tuned for the next episode where I change the handlebars and mirrors!
Paint used:
Spraymax 2k Hot Rod Satin Black - amzn.to/3PEtkfV

I like the half-faired look of the Bandits and SV650s. In numerous rebuilds of ZG1000s that I've owned, I've run them half-faired and it's immensely easier for maintenance and cleaning.
Those big old bikes are eye-wateringly good value for money and the engines are so easy to maintain. They deserve to be kept on the road. I'm guessing clip-ons are on their way.
I am not a fan of clip ons. Upright bars on everything I own. Just a different set with different dimensions on the way
Anything but clip-ons on such a big old comfortable bus.
Even ape hangers would look better then clip-ons.
Here in NZ we got the GS1200SS, (i have one :-) its the Bandit 1200 engine in a twin shock chassis and styling that is taken from the early 80s TT-F1 Suzuka 8 hour race bike. It came with clip ons, and its starting to get a bit uncomfortable on longer rides, so I'm looking for its replacement as my main bike, at the moment its between the CB1300, XJR1300, or a GSX1200 Inazuma (twin shock bandit, kinda).
@@uhtred7860keep the gs1200ss just change the upper triple clamp to a bandit 1200 unit and use normal handle bars
That´s a very, very classy bike. They just don´t make them like they used to. Great taste my friend.
Thank you!
My pick on the side covers would have been semi-gloss to more closely resemble the finish on the enghine.
Paint on your shirt adds character. 👍
🤣🤣 Definitely
The little things that really bring out a new look. Nice!
Agreed and thank you
Those pods look perfect now BJ!
I loved mine ❤ I had that chrome on my Bandit as well and because the bike was silver I left them alone. Very cool to see content on your page 🫵🏻👍🏻
Oh yeah if the bike was silver I'd probably leave them. This green just bega for black though
Shared this one with my bro in Ohio with a fb link. He owns one of these and has been a voice of support for me and the Nighthawk. ~ Just saying. Thanks for this one! from New Hampshire.
That thing is absolutely beautiful. Really glad you're getting to enjoy it, and bike's lucky to be in the hands of a bad ass owner 🍻
Thanks so much!
I am kind of amazed at the difference that made in the overall look of the bike.
It really doesn't take much to change the look. Very strategic small changes go a very long way!
Thank you for the paint info, I will now be using this haha
Liked your philosophy re getting a new shirt instead of getting angry, prior to Xmas 2022 I would have gotten angry, but I got cancer for Christmas and it put everything into perspective, big time!, after a very big op I’m classed as cured, and the big take away was perspective, don’t get mad, get a new shirt, spot on! 🙂👍👍
Also now it means I can move it to my "work shirt" pile so it will be worn more lol
I believe 'that green' is 'British racing green'. One of the best of colours.
BRG is definitely one of the best. Not sure if this is considered that though as its pretty dark for BRG
Looks 100x better. I would do the rear footpegs and the fuel cap also
🤘🤘
Looks great and the preparation spent on them was well worth it. For me, the only thing that spoils it are the chrome bolt heads which detracts from the look. Just me being picky!
Well they look good by me as they match the bolts over the green areas. Its all cohesive now
love the british racing green. might be picking up a 1997 in dark blue this weekend...will be my 3rd GS If i get it...exciting!
Its such an awesome color. I really wanted to find it
Ok, I wasn't sure if I agreed with you about painting the covers at the beginning, but they look great, and they go well with the rest of the bike. Good job. Regards from Canada 🇨🇦
Thank ya
Perfect finish and color!!
🤘
Just bought a 96 bandit 600 same color. Can’t wait to see what you do with this!
Awesome!
Those small weekend jobs make such a bit difference, even just removing that old peeling label and the sticky residue 😲
Hope your motivational slogan makes it through the move, one way or another.
Keep it up Dude! Love your work.
Agreed. Small jobs are necessary to keep things light and fun. Look for a moving video soon! Tomorrow will be a big day!
@@BrickHouseBuilds 🤞All goes well.
looks good but I think I would have put a black bolt in there too, Keep up the good work, can't wait to see you in the new place.
The bolts now match the rest of the hardware for contrast which I like. Glad you enjoyed
I like to wrinkle finish rather than just satin black, has nice textured look.
I definitely use wrinkle in specific areas. I like the texture as well
Being a child of the 60's and 70's myself, and considering my first few bikes were dripping in chrome, I kinda like the chromed covers on my Mk1. But its a time honoured tradition to make the bike your own. :-)
Chrome definitely has its place and time but for me and this bike it doesn't match the esthetic. It is definitely tradition to make it your own though like you said 🤘
A simple thing makes all the difference, good job. I think the chain guard would look good painted the same.
Thank ya. Definitely debatable on the chain guard being brushed. We will see
For a bike built down to a price, out of parts bin bits and pieces, the Bandit is an amazing bike, "Greater than the sum of its parts" is a great way to describe them.😄
I've owned 3 x1200 bandits, really nice bikes, bullet proof engines,I recently bought a GSF1200s bandit from a friend, showa suspension &6 pot calipers as standard,I'm sorry I sold it on as I have a classic British bike nowt,it was an awesome bike, fast& comfortable..
They are great bikes indeed
Have a 600 myself. I’m not big on chrome either but it looks better here IMO but to each their own. And it’s one more shiny thing that could catch the attention of distracted drivers. Clean looking bike though.
Having ridden bright color bikes with loud exhaust I can say this tiny piece would not catch a drivers eye unfortunately. I ride like zero people see me.
@@BrickHouseBuilds Only way to ride!
A nice bike. Love the green.
Thank ya much!
Nice touch on painting the side covers. Looking forward to seeing the next episode. RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!
🤘🤘
Excellent choice in bikes✌The CB750 aint lookin so happy😁
Hahaha Pati shouldn't be jealous at all. Ive ridden the Bandit 3x and the CB750 daily the last 2 weeks!
I love the color of this bike!
Same, I HAD to have the green. Took a hot minute to find a clean one
You did such a great job. Looks fantastic. Very sorry about the shirt. I relate.
The shirt lived a good life and will be greatly missed 🙏
I think I would have just wrapped them. It gives you the option to go back if you like in the future.
Replacements are cheap on eBay. I'm not one to go back to chrome anyway so this will be good forever
A nice, quick project that has made a huge difference! Great job, my friend!
Thank ya!
Can't wait to see how it looks "de-chromed." I've debated on painting those airbox covers on mine and agree they kinda stand out. Also looking forward to seeing a video on the shop progress! Keep up the good work 👍
On this bike there is really only one more spot and that is the gauges. I would like to do something with them but it's on the lower end of the list right now.
Cool lil vid, Mk1 bandit 1200s has always been one of my favourite bikes, looking forward to seeing the handle bar upgrade, Renthal straight bars are very popular in the uk 🇬🇧 for this bike,
I had a previous Bandit and wasn't able to keep it so I had to find another. Definitely not straight bars. The smashed tail streetfighter thing is not my style
@@BrickHouseBuilds I saw your video with the other bandit and the title for it, at least the owner got there bike back, good karma, it meant you were meant to find this one,
Not a street fighter fan hey, lol
I guess that’s my age showing itself at 52
Still I’m looking forward to see what you have planned, I hope the new shop is coming along it’s looks like a fantastic space,
Good luck,
@@leeflanagan3740 Every time i see a street fighter, I just think "Poor bike, what have they done to you" 🤣🤣
Beautiful machine
Thank you!
Really good job.
🤘
G’day nice bike it’s the style which I used to ride before the dovetail shot off in the air the gap between the back wheel and the mud guard, I think that all 8 of the bikes I had they had nice styling even my favourite bike a RGS 1000 Laverda. That’s a nice looking bike and the tweaks your doing to it will personalise it, take care I like your channel even though I’m 66 they never get out of your system. Regards John
Thanks John!
Im a bike builder, too, and I have worked in auto body repair for 20 years. Considering the size of what you are painting, you are doing it well! Preperation is everything. The 2k paint and clear is best. Wear gloves and goggles!!! That junk can leach into the pores of your skin and around your eyes. Keep up the good work and awesome projects!
All local stores were out of my preferred gloves so I had them on order. Only so much time to work so I have to get it done.
I enjoy the look of the side covers both ways. The blacked out ones give it a more modern, cohesive look. I was looking forward to seeing some ride-bys at the end. I still go back and watch the 05’ 1200s wrap up video for all of the awesome ride-by footage and and that Big B12 sound!!!
I definitely want to make another video like that one as it's one of my favorites! When I get more time I will 🤘🤘
Excellent job, looks very sharp now! Keep us posted, man!👍👍👍
The new bars and mirrors should change it completely! Just waiting on them to friggin ship!
I might have almost stopped when the panels came off… but I’m glad you persisted - if does look good.
Black bolt head maybe?
@@nigelcox7477 Bolt heads look good to me. Retains a tiny bit of contrast
Gorgeous color combo! The late 1990s and into the 2000s, we’re an interesting mix of chrome and non-chrome pieces on Japanese motorcycles. My FZ1 had a number of silver pieces on it from new. A top priority of me to paint and power coat black. Great job!
Thank you! My gen 1 FZ1 had lots of chrome and silver but it looked more at home there with the silver engine
Maybe black out the bolts also 👍🏻 enjoying the videos👏🏻🇮🇪
The bolts don't bother me as they match all the rest on the bike. Stainless over dark green etc. Looks cohesive
I ride Harleys, so I am into chrome... Wasn't sure about your color change, but it came out looking good......
On some bikes chrome is the right choice for sure but with this green I want to do more black and specific accents.
Heat up those screws red hot and drop them in some oil. It will turn them black and they will disappear.
I just worry about messing with the tensile strength at that point. Seen another video using a torch and wd40 for a gold look which was cool
Had a lot of bikes but was genuinely thrilled to own a 1200S. Had to be in black though. I tend to keep things stock these days but thats a great little mod to the shiny airbox covers 👍
Definitely great bikes
what a beautiful bike
Thanks!
look's so much better with the black covers!
🤘🤘
Nice look BJ makes it look more better in contrast with the bike shame about your shirt man I’d have been totally pissed lol good luck with the new shop and look forward to what you have in mind for the handle bars and mirrors take care and all the best 👍👌🔧🔧🔧❤️
Thanks Peter! My fault for wearing my good shirts in the shop. Usually always something plain and basic.
@@BrickHouseBuilds yeah mate been there a few times I guess it’s something all us guys do we never learn lol 👍👌
Good luck
Paint the side cover bolt and washer black too mate
The chrome bolts now match the contrast of the rest of the bike. They look right at home actually
Looking so good mate! I've used those same rattle cans for clear coat and didn't know they had a shelf life after activated lol good to know!
It wouldn't be long before you found out if using 2k aerosol.
Thank ya! Yeah they aren't intended to sit for long at all before going bad.
Paint the lower fork legs, and the chain guard that same satin color.
I won't go that far
Good stuff. Kind of make the covers disappear into the rest of the black that the bike already has.
Did you notice any green paint differences that was under the sticker? Probably not because it’s likely been garaged and not sun baked.
I enjoy the shorter videos like this too, easy to watch the whole thing on a lunch break at work.
Luckily no color fade! I was worried about that but the bike is super clean and has always been kept inside. Definitely a dance on video length. For some reason my longer videos have done far and away better than my shorter ones which goes against everything I hear
Looks great. What did you use to clean off the decal adhesive? I want to do the same, but not damage the painted frame.
I used a gum and adhesive remover. I show it at the end of my previous video about the Cobra. Works well and I've never had an instance of damaged paint.
nice standard bandit in mint condition ,try t cutting paintwork and get the scratches out would be time better spent mate.
I'm sure a bit of time polishing paint will happen but first I want to make a few changes.
Nitrile gloves are your friend when it comes to paint. Keeps you from putting oils from your hands and fingers on what you are painting.
I know. All local stores were sold out of my usual brand and the ones I ordered hadn't arrived yet
My 1998 1200s is missing the side covers and I honestly would of just done the same thing
I have just felt they look out of place in chrome
@BrickHouseBuilds agreed. Odd spot to put some chrome covers
Yea, chrome is very contextual, maybe that polished aluminium you had after the sanding if the engine was also in that silver color, but being that gun metal dark grey changes the entire equation.
looks good and i guess the Dr. shirt is going to become a paint suit.
I do like a brushed finish a lot and would absolutely consider that for a different combo. Super bummed about my shirt though lol
That grey paint on the engine is, (according to Suzuki) a special paint that helps dissipate heat, they used it on nearly all of the air/oil cooled fours (in slightly different shades) from the 600s to the 1400's. Its tough paint whatever it is, I have never seen a early 87/88 FZR1000 keep its paint on the barrels and heads, and they gave up and left the later ones unpainted. But the same era Suzuki GSX-Rs are the opposite, ive seen engines left outside for 20 years and the paint is fine.😆
Those old oil boiler engines can go big miles if looked after nice bike r u going de chrome the clocks and mirrors
Solid engines to say the least! As mentioned I am replacing the mirrors and bars. Clock's eventually but its probably a ways down the road
So Ape Hangers and Dagger levers are next after you glue letters on your tires?
🤣🤣🤣🤣 100% Gonna do MASSIVE PIRELLI letters
Finally got a good bike ! ..... Ha Ha just kidding. Always enjoy you videos, Cheers Dale Walker
Only the best bike ever 😎 Cool to know you are watching them! 🤘
That is a clean Bandit.
Has the exhaust manifold been replaced? They rot quickly in the UK (it is mostly stainless, except for a quick rot section just after the 4>1 join). If not your tig welding skills will soon get more practice!
The 600 was available with dull metal colour covers over the airbox sides
Stock manifold. We don't have the same levels of corrosion over here. Never seen one rot to that extent. Also, we generally don't ride in the rain worsening the effect.
@@BrickHouseBuilds , here they rotted rapidly , and it is a very common fix to have to do once they are a couple of years old.
Another bike because one can never have enough bikes 😁
Im honing in on my ideal motorcycle fleet!
Now you know why classic bikes in original condition comand a higher price !
Just clean in general. Good condition is good condition
Don’t worry that shirt is not something you’ll miss in a few years or even tomorrow
I'll miss it more than you think
Where'd you get that awesome Doc Brown shirt?
I wish I could remember. I had to search the depths of the internet for it
Now you've painted the airbox covers the chrome screws stand out, might want to consider painting them as well?
If you zoom out to look at the whole bike they aren't noticeable and actually match everything else. The same hardware is throughout the bike over dark green and gray.
@@BrickHouseBuilds Yeah I agree just thought they were noticeable, still looks good though, can't wait to see the next video, will there be a chrome delete?
@@johntreloar8203 The only other chrome bits are the gauges, handlebars, and mirrors. I have bars and mirrors on the way to alleviate that issue which will be the next video.
@@BrickHouseBuilds Nice, can't wait.
Nice! Love the green. Is that what they call, "British Racing Green"? Or, did you already say that?
I dont think it's actually BRG being a Suzuki color. I feel its darker than that
@@BrickHouseBuilds I beg to differ...😀
@@BrickHouseBuilds Or maybe" Suzuki Racing Green". Ok, I'll see myself out.
I recon it does look better than chrome 👍
That it does
That 2k is gnarly stuff. I wouldnt use it with a normal respirator.
Right, ill not wear anything next time
@@BrickHouseBuilds I was gonna paint my bike with that stuff and ended up researching it. You have to use a PAPR style since the 3M style cannot get all the nasty out of the air. All I am saying is be safe because we like your videos and want to continue watching them.
My initial reply was a bit knee-jerk so I apologize. I hear ya though
Why didnt you put the rubbers back in the mounting hole of the covers.
I did but simply didn't show that moment
Looks a lot better 👍
Agreed
maybe you could incorporate some glitter and pipe cleaners... 12 min video on spraypaint lol
What are you expecting here? 30 seconds?
Nice touch. Way better then crome. 😎🇧🇻💯💯👍
🤘🤘
Small change but big result. Way better look.
Definitely
They look miles better 🤟👍
Small details 👌
Vast improvement.
Small details with a big impact
For me naked they look even nicer.
The non fairing bikes look great too but I do prefer the wind protection
You installing some Ape hangers? LOL
Thats the plan 😉
I have to say, the black is better than the chrome. The whole colour scheme works with those covers 'vanished'
A dark green really goes well with black. It's a very "elegantly aggressive" vibe I hope to go after.
Those look tons better. Will you be painting the bolts too?
Thank you. Bolts will stay as I like that level of contrast.
Plastic razor blade?
Correct
Easy way to remove chrome is chlorhydric acid... I don't really understand why you had to paint those parts black...
So after stripping of the fake chrome im sure the plastic would have a very uneven finish on which I'd then have to smooth and paint.
Giving these a coat of paint is so easy and quick anyway. On top of that I'm not dealing with acids
Way better than the chrome!!!
Definitely 👍
Prefer the chrome.
Some will always prefer it for sure
Well your first mistake is not wearing latex gloves, or any other type of gloves so you dont leave prints
All local shops were out of my normal gloves so I had some on order. Please note where I handled the covers so I didn't have prints. Pretty obvious.
Dude! Dude! Favorite shirt-spray painting?? Um dumb ass move bro.
Hey at least it wasn't Amber's favorite shirt.
Oh it was for sure a dumb move. I was too excited to just paint the things lol.
Nice. Congratulations on your success. Can't wait to see the shop unfold. Great content. Keep it up. Cheers from Idaho.
I was thinking while watching that video. Those covers would look really cool in that duplicolor black chrome.
@@careyallen8225 probably would for sure
please wear gloves when using panel wipe if you dont want your kids to look like blinky the fish......
All local stores were out of my normal gloves so I had them on order.
Chrome do suck, never have liked all the chrome put on bikes.... Just my opinion...
It has its place but often its overdone! IMO
