  • Sölden is one of the most popular ski regions in Austria. At an altitude of 3000 m there is a mountain station for the tourists. As it is built on permafrost stone that can shift, it stands on a hydraulic base that adapts to the moving ground. In 2010, one of the most modern cable cars in the world was built to bring guests to the station. Michael Gritsch is responsible for maintaining the cable cars. In his revision he checks every reel, every rope - whilst standing on a moving cable car. The most important requirement for the job: a head for heights.

I'm not good when it comes to heights in fact watching this made me come over funny. These people that have no fear of heights I admire them and I wish I had there nerve. Thank you for the video.

The place itself is accessible without the ropeway on ground although very arduous, that's how the stations and pylons are built. As for the cable-laying, a helicopter took one strand up, and then lowered through the previously extended strand before each end mended into a single continuous loop.

"Permafrost is abundant at high elevations in mid-latitude mountains, where the annual mean temperature is below - 3 °C. It contains variable amounts of ice and exists in different forms: in steep bedrock, in rock glaciers, in debris deposited by glaciers and in vegetated soil." Source: EEA
