Mercedes ML55 AMG - Does cheap mean cheerful for AMG's ugly duckling? - BEARDS n CARS

  • The Mercedes-Benz ML 55 AMG is something of a 'love it or hate it' car for most petrolheads, and its not too hard to see why...
    It comes from deep in the Chrysler era of Mercedes, has eyebrow raisingly low used prices, and an admittedly soft appearance for a car to carry the legendary AMG badge and a 5.4 litre V8 engine.
    So what's the deal with these rare performance SUV's of the early 2000's? Let's head out on the road and review the early 2000s Mercedes-Benz ML55 AMG!

    I love my 2000 black beauty. The original owner sent it straight to Renntech for about 25k worth of mods. Now about 400 horses. The biggest negative that I have is the old plastic is cracking. Part of that is our south Texas sun probably. This is my second ml55. Bought one in 2004, hit a deer at about 90 in 2006. Never any major issues, until the deer, that is.
    Enjoyed your videos. Thanks.

    Great video! I just bought a 2000 ML55 in British Racing Green with only 48k miles on the clock for a crazy low price! The 5.4 engine purrs just like it does in the rocket E55.. This thing has serious pickup!
    I liked the comparison to the VW group products, however you ignored the main advantage this vehicle has over the others. That is, the ML is a body-on-frame truck with hi/lo 4x4 transfer case, rather than a unibody AWD car-based platform.
    The result is that this truck is highly capable in all aspects- it rips on the motorway, and performs great on tough off-road trails through mud, snow and sand as well. Let's see a Touareg do that! ;)

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  Před 3 lety

      The Touareg is actually known for being one of the best off-roaders of the 2000's, lol. And as Fifth Gear proved, it can also tow a Boeing passenger plane xD

    @taffy7hfa897 Před 3 lety +6

    Great review, thanks for uploading, Yes they're all VERY light on the steering, probably because they were really built with the American market in mind. The biggest difference between this and the VW and the Porsche has to be that it is a traditional body on frame 4x4 with a low range gearbox which makes it more of a truck than a car. Fantastically durable though.

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  Před 3 lety +2

      Yeah the R63 is hyper rare, and from what I hear, insanely expensive to have work done. Read an article on one where AMG wanted something like 40-50k for an engine overhaul

  • @nickcsuki8123
    @nickcsuki8123 Před 2 lety +7

    Thanks for the review! I think it looks more dated yes, but that kind of makes it a better classic option then an older Cayenne or Touareg in my opinion. I feel like it would be really cool to drive the ML55. When I'm looking for a Cayenne or Touareg I always tend to lean towards a 'newer' model because they don't have that classic feel just yet...

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  Před 2 lety +1

      It's certainly a more unicorn level fast SUV from the earlier days of those vehicle types. Some of the feel and design hasn't aged as well to me as the Teg or Cayenne, especially the very 90's interior

    • @nickcsuki8123
      @nickcsuki8123 Před 2 lety

      @@HSGAutomotive Yes, that's true! But it was still a solid and completely functional interior right? Not cheap or bad quality, just outdayed design wise, am I right? I am leaning towards the ML55 right now, gonna look at some for sale in my area next week...

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  Před 2 lety +1

      It offers a lot of spec for the money, but I'd recommend keeping expectations of Mercedes-Quality to a minimum when it comes to the Daimler-Chrysler era of the early 2000's. The 90's AMG's are great, and everything from the CLS onward got back to their reputation, but these have a distinctly more American plastic vibe. Other models suffer from it too, like the C-Class.

It's 1000lbs heavier than the ML55 😆 it is so heavy that it needs about 800hp to actually be "fast" basic ass M3's and stupid Mustangs would beat me by a mile regularly. The ML55 is more refined even though it's a little older, and with some mods I wonder if the ML could keep up with the CTT.
