- Talking through one of my favourite compositional features of the Polyend Play: Variations, Patterns, and how I think about them for making music.

I post all of the music I make, including WAV stems; sample packs; Dirtywave M8 song bundles; collections of video textures; early access to videos; and a whole pile of other stuff on Patreon. I know I know, I hate doing this as well, but if you like what I do and want to get more of it, while also helping me offset some of my ludicrous gear purchases, this is the best place to do it:

If you're in the market for new gear, my favourite place to find new and interesting synthesizers and other electronic music gear is Signal Sounds. They are based in Glasgow, but ship all over the place and often have stuff nobody else does. Find them at www.signalsounds.com/

Thanks for sobering up enough to make this video Stephen!
Who said I'm sober!?
you GUYS
Very easy to understand. This really makes much better sense to me than all the improvised stuff I've seen. Your explanation of the obvious uses of variation and pattern in the songwriting context is great. Thank you!
Thanks Andy! Glad it was useful. I found the variation mode really smart and valuable for getting interesting... variations. As it were.
Finally catching up on this box.
What are your thoughts?
@@StephenMcLeod Mine arrives today, so I'll let you know.
I'm trying to create & arrange entire songs on a single box, often away from home. I learned from the Deluge that I love the big grid of buttons for arranging & sequencing, but that box is very heavy and has so much more functionality than I need.
I'm hoping the Play+ ends up being a mini-Deluge for me.
@@StephenMcLeod loved it. So fast to learn. Just overall very immediate. Reminded of the child of a Deluge and Polyend Tracker… it was a nice sweet spot for me.
But alas, mine had a jiggly dis0lay and I sent it back. Polyend folks saying it’s by design. But the software felt underbaked to me, so I’m gonna give it a bit and pick one up again another time.
Until then, using the Tracker Mini a TON and getting back into the iPad mini apps, too, like Koala & BeatMaker.
Thanks for the informative video! i have a question: can you "sequence" variations as well as you can sequence patterns? Or variations are solely for "live" performance purposes?
Excellent question. I just went and tested, and it seems like chaining only works with patterns. At least... As far as I can tell anyway!
@@StephenMcLeodwhich is kind of counterintuitive as running a sequence would seem to be more obvious a need within variations, like sequencing all the subtle instrument changes etc… thanks for checking it out.
Good explanation sir
Thanks for watching!
Ok, neat! But how do you peogram a variation? And store it?
Variations are stored upon creation.
Nice tutorial and thanks for doing it. It was leaving out something though how to have the Play actually save a pattern. I don't know if I'm the only one experiencing this but for some reason when I hold down a pattern button nothing happens while I have done this before with no problem now suddenly it won't save any of my patterns exept the first one on the project. I feel I'm missing something. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks again for the tutorial..
Sorry for the delayed reply! I'm not really sure what's going on there. It's probably worth reaching out to Polyend or asking in their forum.
The way I work it is make your first pattern. All your tracks and instruments in the sequence. Then go to patterns. Copy that first pattern (hold it and then select another pattern spot) which will make a copy of everything you have done. Then make changes delete change etc… repeat as many times as needed.
I'm so confused. Watching this new video by someone named Stephen McLeod and I see comments already here in my name.
Re-watch every video!!
@@StephenMcLeod I think I will! This presenter seems more intelligent somehow.
Blinky LEDs in the dark!
The most important thing!
Not seeing any yellow. Maybe I've gone color blind.
It's tough to capture on camera as they are so bright! It's a kind of... yellowy whitey orange in the video.
@@StephenMcLeod definitely looks more orange
