Stoked to finally start seeing some more Play content! I've had mine for like 6 months and there's been surprisingly little content on it for how fun a device it is. Just really really easy to get a quick jam going and then an infinite rabbit hole of variation and glitchery from there. The live performance thing is definitely my biggest question too though, as I have yet to wrap my head around that part yet. Will probably just track it into my Akai Force or export stems from interesting patterns and arrange them on the Force though. Thanks as always for another fun video Ricky. Have always really appreciated your vibe and the quality of the content you put out!
Have you had any luck exporting stems directly into Force-does that work??

Imagine cc mapping other gear and messing with their filters on a button push using performance mode. Right now i use it along side my digitone. It's the most fun I've had. I believe in it's potential. I hope polyend can see it too

nice seeing you use the Play! between work, family, day to day stuff, etc i've found the Play to be the go to for some fun and creativity. i put together some Play compatible sample packs (using NI Expansions and other sample packs) so i can easily use the Beat Fill function to get something going quickly. and then just tweak things, add bass, chords, sound effects, etc until you get something you like. i don't usually go crazy with all the randomization either, but it is fun to Play around.
Recently got myself a Play OG so I was revisiting some of your videos on this one, as ‘of course’ they are very inspirational.
But by expressing your select-deselect frustration, now you’ve even managed to train some kind of muscle memory on my side 😅 thanks 👍🏻
Hey man, always love you videos but this one in particular I really enjoyed because I felt like I could learn a bit from your process on multiple levels. I'm just a few minutes I'm seeing some mixing tips, arrangement philosophy, and getting to see you do it on the fly on a piece of gear I'm wanting to go further on. Thanks for the kind words Resting27! I've been having a ton of fun on the Play, and I want to do more with it. I'm realizing now that one of the tracks I previewed on it had some midi notes being sent tot a synth but I forgot the midi cable! Maybe I didn't need the synth after all since I didn't even notice it's absence.

Ricky you got the formula bro, videos are always smooth and to the point. Liams videos are full of OCD and EZbot vids are great but you can get overwhelmed really fast
I have never tried to make a beat like this (this type of workflow) in my life on any of my devices…until today. This was soooo much fun creating like this on the MPC Live and Force. I was surprised how simple it was on those devices (wish the EFX were imbedded on all the track types like the Polyend Play). Thanks for opening my eyes
Really?! That's awesome to hear you're trying a new approach. This has been my go to since its super quick, but be careful of habits! Once on a Machine Micro (ages ago) I kept making the same beat over and over without realizing haha

Just got one of these and this video pops up, haha - great timing. I don't really use variations much either since I can't export them. Its wild watching this workfllow since I approach it the exact same way. One thing to add is the live record is sick. Like turn on live record and tweak the decay of the open hat/claps just a little in real time.
See! this is why I love these comemnt sections. They teach me new techniques! Of course that's possible. But why the hell have I never done it?! Maybe I was too distracted with everything else it could do I forgot to try some of the more straight forward things. Thanks Landon!

Great video as always Ricky, I've just got the Roland verselab MV1 and would love to see how you would build a full track on that? It seems to be an evolution of the MV 8800 and has hidden depths that you could really demonstrate. Love your work as always.
Re. Microtune what you can do is randomize by octave and then microtune the whole track

Wow that look super fun!!! Also feels good for learning patterns as you can see all the steps in front of you (no the same with the Roland TR-6S that I have for example...). Would you recommend changing from the Roland to this Polyend?

The Play looks like a pumped up Elektron Model Samples. The button layout. But a much, much nicer dispay. Did not like the Polyend tracker too much, but this looks interesting. Nice groove as always!
All this generative back and forward, probability, beat looping etc, is why I love the Beat Step Pro, and the Norns Shield with a grid style device. Its just so much damn fun, instead of my usual drum programming by hand with mouse and and keyboard via Reaper's MIDI editor! :D Polyend Play seems great!
Right? Its fun to, in a way, have the machine play you! I've been diving more into the midi side of the play and its just as wild for external gear and possibly your DAW!
Kinda like what it was doing with the varying of hi hats at 3:38 when you had it on randomize Sample In Folder!
Nice groove and it sounds like a Ricky Tinez track (I.e. the gear isn’t in the way!) ! If (a very big if!) I was going to buy another synth/groovebox/device, I strongly suspect the Play would be it! It looks like it really facilitates creativity.

Oscar, I actually had a track in here with midi notes being sent out! I need to do another one showing more of the midi tracks. Its suuuuuper powerful. Especially where the Chords can be fixed and then you play around with melodies.

Hey Atextraxx, I guess it depends on your music tastes and tolerance for sound design. The Play offers almost no sound design, relatively speaking, compared to the Rytm or Digitakt. Both those Elektrons can actually sample sound directly into the unit as well. If you're looking for a machine that takes sounds you already possess, and easily creates unique rhythms that would otherwise take a lot of brain power to do this is a great machine. If you want something that can sample, and push samples so far that you forget their origin, you might want to look at the others.

good god you just showed me how to copy the variation. i had this problem forever when it just switches to a blank variation, ruining the track in the process. thank you.

This just looks really cool. I love drum sequencing in Ableton, but this takes it to a much more hands on level. I'd need the price to come down by a couple of hundred though...
Prior to the update you had no way of exporting the individual tracks. You'd have to record each one at a time with them soloed (is that a word?) But now its so fun to create something funky, even if quickly and simple, and then export it into live and then run with it
I've never tried a tracker, but DAMN that machine looks pretty sweet. My MPC 2000xl has 16 pads, which was pretty generous when it came out. That thing seems to have 160. DAMN.

Also does this have an auditioning out and a main out ? Because i think this kind of device needs one out for headphones and one master out.
So a loop keeps playing on the main out while you're auditioning samples synths, patterns etc etc on the headphones, and then once you're done programming any pattern, you could fade it into the main out

It looks realy fun, I have the tracker and have had a lot of fun with it. I just wish both of them had 16 tracks. Or even 12.
I FEEL this so much aha. Like, I get it.. BUT c'mon! I dig the limit, but there are those moments where you need to grab another piece of gear and use the midi tracks, or start consolidating 2 sounds into a track and then you lose the mixing capabilities.
@CrescentRollCarl the play has 8 audio(samples) tracks AND 8 midi tracks so it does have 16 tracks available!
@Ray Tillman yeah true, but then I have to lug one of my synths to the couch and hook it up. It's a cool device though, and I'm considering ditching my digitone for it.

Is the polyend stuck on a 16th note? Or is there microtiming?
In case you haven't figured it out yet, it does have microtiming and you can enable or disable record quantisation. The microtiming can also be changed manually on a per step basis with the "Notch" parameter, either forwards or backwards.

They are completely different Machines, I had the tracker and sold it, I just didn't get on with it. I have the Play and I love it, totally different way of working.
I got to try this this thing. I just try to imagine if this was in front of me why would I use it instead of the Tracker. Is it just a kind Of an updated or souped up version?

exactly haha, its a commitment to at least a weekend. but its super fun for creating preset drum rhythms that you might not have initially thought of. I wonder how quickly those would get rinsed though and you'd be bored with them. So far I'm having fun with the preset rhythms and trying new samples

Doesn't make any sense does it? But I can chop samples on other boxes and then import them into the play, so its turned out not to be a biggy for me.
