    Been towing my 2019 2500RL for 3 years now. First towing behind a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the pneumatic suspension and now with 2020 Silverado 1500 with the 6.2L and Max Towing Package and finally with an E2 hitch. We've taken that trailer from Michigan to Maine, New York and Kentucky without any issues averaging about 9.5MPG for both the Jeep and the Silverado. I will add that I have installed both Sumo Springs and Road Armor equalizers with significant improvement in the ride. Both highly recommended.

    I ave a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton truck. When I put the air bags in the 1/2 it made both trucks equal. I can pull my trailer with confidence with both trucks. Thanks for the exhaust tip. I need to look into that.

      I never had a problem towing the trailer with my half ton. The only time it scared me was coming down from Mt. Rainier. You can’t beat the exhaust brakes on the diesel. The trailer was pushing hard even with the trailer brakes. Did not want the trailer brakes to overheat. The gas mileage with the flow through exhaust was 11 to 13 mph towing.

    I had a 2019 1/2 ton Chevy High Country with max tow package installed on it. I currently tow a 25 foot Airstream. I installed Air Bags and it did help prevent the bouncing when going down some roads. The Airstream has a 950 lbs tongue weight when we travel with it. My truck's payload was 1623 Lbs. When I weight it on the CAT scales I was 300+ lbs over the payload limit. It is amazing how quickly things add up in the bed of the truck. I decided to play it safe and upgraded to a Ram 3500 1 ton Dually. Plus we are waiting on our new 30 Foot Classic to come in later this year. Having towed with this truck it is amazing how much more less stressful it is. We had very high winds on our last trip and I barely felt the trailer behind me. Without the wind you don't even know it is behind you. The control it has going down (and up) steep 6% grades is amazing. If you can afford it a diesel I feel this is the best option for towing. Having towed the same trailer with both trucks showed me the major difference in the all important stopping power.

      Yes, our truck did great! We towed our trailer over 10,000 miles after we completed our Northwest Pacific trip. We now tow with a Chevy 2500 HD Turbo Diesel. After going across the country with our new truck and trailer, what a difference!! 🙌. Good luck on your new Classic. We highlighted our friends 33 foot Classic in one of our videos. Absolutely beautiful trailer. Too small for us, but absolutely gorgeous!! If you get a chance take a peek. Thank you for your comment. Stan and Rhonda

    On my half ton Ram I also added air bags to tow my Grand Design 2800BH. I might recommend adding the Hellwig solid steel sway bar on the back of the truck. Mine from the factory was hollow. The new one really helped with the truck having a more planted feel.

    Besides having the same trailer, I had Firestone bags & a Helwig stabilizer bar in the rear on the F150, using the Hensley Arrow hitch. There’s 9” height diff between the F350 & 2500, the new hitch bar from Hensley arrives Thurs, on Friday we leave for Seaside OR, shakedown trip. We ordered the 350 w/camper prep pkg, incl 1 extra leaf & a stabilizer bar. Our fuel mpg s/b identical, looking forward to seeing how it tows.

    At the end of the day the truck axel to axel distance doesn’t change wheel to wheel doesn’t change and the weight of your truck doesn’t change. Sway is real . Trailer height is real. Get a 3/4 ton truck it will pull that all day long people. You don’t want to white knuckle your truck down the road and risk your families life. 3/4 ton or above is the way to go if you want to pull a travel trailer.I had a Ram 2500 heavy duty with an 8 foot bed it pulled my keystone sprinter 32 feet long no trouble at all. I had a good weight distribution system as well. I didn’t use it for short trips and I never had an issue. All 2500 trucks are NOT created equal. Use care read the sticker inside the door of the truck your buying don’t trust anyone to tell you what your truck can pull or what truck your trailer needs. Do your homework and take care of your family. Ladies do this yourselves as well dont trust! You have a brain 🧠

    • @OverTheHillAdventures

      Hi Cheryl, thank you so much for your comment. The bottom line is you need to know your truck specifications set by the factory. My truck can tow this trailer all day long. There are no white knuckling situations and after towing this trailer for 5,000 miles I am very confident with our set up. Will a 2500 tow this trailer better? The answer is YES!! Is a 2500 necessary? The answer is NO!! I put my truck and trailer on a CAT scale and it is below the payload and towing weight. The problem is people overload their trailer and the truck. I’m sure you have seen overloaded 2500s rolling down the road. I have certainly seen those scary situations. Like you said be smart it is not worth the safety of your family. Thanks again we appreciate you. Stan and Rhonda

      @@OverTheHillAdventures yes! I’ve seen a lot I started camping when I was a kid my dad had an old prowler 5th wheel and a Chevy due-lie, he taught me a lot. It’s scary some of things you see. Ive seen many things that a 2500 shouldn’t be pulling and there are many configurations to any truck just because it says 2500 doesn’t mean it can or can’t just like 1500. My opinion is use 1500 a with care. To me they are fine with short not just light weight trailers. In fact some can pull 10,000 or more but can they handle the height and sway ? I’ve made a million mistakes myself. Be safe happy trails.

    Looking at purchasing a used 2022 model 2500RL versus a new 2024 RL. The 2022 model does not have the antilock brakes which are now standard beginning in 2024. What are your feelings on the ABS on the GD? We will be towing it with a 2020 Ford F150 King Ranch with the towing package.

    • @OverTheHillAdventures
      @OverTheHillAdventures  Před měsícem

      Hi Patrick, I would 100% go with the 2024. The antilock brakes are a whole new element of safety. That’s number 1. 2) The solar package that comes with the 2024 is also great. 3) The 12 volt refrigerator. I think they got all the kinks out from the first models. 4) The instant heat water heaters are excellent.
      What ever the MSRP the dealer is asking for the 2024 go 30% below that!! Stick to your guns and it will be about the same price as the 2022.

I was a little concerned about towing this much weight. I am towing with pretty much the same vehicle, 2014 Sierra 1500. Hi Dave, the weight distribution hitch is a must!! Make sure you are not over your payload. We are currently on a 5 week trip. Truck tows incredible!!! I’ve been going back and forth about getting a new truck only because the mileage on the truck. My truck is a tow beast. I get 11 to 13 mpg towing!! Not many trucks can do that. We have had no problems towing the weight because it doesn’t exceed the weight specifications. On our way up to Northern California I had to make a hard stop. The trailer went into a skid. The truck handled it perfectly. I truly believe I have the perfect tow setup. The semi trucks do not push me around. I don’t tow more than 60mph. I’m guessing your trailer weighs pretty much the same. Make sure you don’t tow with water in your RV tanks that is an added 400lbs. Just enough for the trip. I put in five gallons to use the bathroom from destination to destination. Just food for thought. Thank you for watching and subscribing!! Till the next time we always love to help, Stan and Rhonda

I have the Equilizer 4pt WD hitch with sway control and also installed the airlift 5000 bags and upgraded to E rated all terrain tires. @@muddpuppy07 You are 100% correct, you can never change what is on your payload yellow sticker. However, the airbags, the weight distribution hitch, and the 10 ply tires helps hold the load and gives you a far more stable ride. I never go over my payload specifications. Going over your payload you run the risk of suspension failure and tire blowouts. I chose to upgrade my suspension with airbags and tires so I can feel completely safe when pulling a travel trailer. J Conns, the reason why I have a weight distribution hitch is for the sway of the trailer. Let’s say you try to avoid an accident and swing your rig into another lane. The trailer will sway uncontrollably and you might loose control. The weight distribution hitch will prevent that from happening. I use my airbags for a level ride and comfortable ride. • @OverTheHillAdventures
      @OverTheHillAdventures  Před 3 lety

      Hey Mike, thanks for your comment and great questions. My payload is 1638 lbs. You are absolutely correct airbags do not increase your payload. The tongue weight of the trailer is 581 lbs. With bodies and cargo in my truck I am way under my payload.
      My last trailer, 2020 Jayco 212QBW Baja Edition. I had WDH without the airbags and the ride sucked!!! The truck squatted and it was not a happy ride. With the new heavier and longer 2021 GD Imagine travel trailer the ride is awesome!!! I think that’s a great comparison.
      Reference the Milwaukee air compressor, it does great for the airbags. It is capable up to 100lbs of air pressure. However, I would not recommend it for a flat tire. It’s great when you need to pump up the trailer tires within a couple of pounds. Quick on the airbags super slow on the tires. Nothing can beat the Viair air compressor for the tires. Thanks for stopping by, Stan and Rhonda

      If you look a little closer you will see the chain is crossed a little higher on the trailer side. You are 100% correct you should always cross your chains. It helps cradle the the tongue of the trailer in case of a disconnect. Thanks for watching, Stan

    How do you set up your load equalization hitch with the bags? I had pretty well the same truck a 2015 Silverado 4 x 4 double cab and towed a much smaller imagine XLS trailer and with the hitch we were perfectly level didn’t need the airbags but it was a much lighter trailer about 5000 pounds empty and 5700 pounds loaded.
    The truck handled the load excellent but I can certainly tell it was working hard with the temperatures of the transmission climbing anytime you were in the western part of United States. Also gas mileage wise towing I was lucky to see 9 miles per gallon and averaged between eight and nine MPG going 60 to 65 miles an hour.
    We ended up selling that truck and getting a three-quarter ton and a major difference as far as towing the truck doesn’t overheat or get anywhere close to overheating. Gas mileage is still between eight and nine but definitely a much more stable platform. Your trailer is actually one that we’re looking at down the road to upgrade to so I’ll have to check out your other video. Thanks for the content, Bill

      @OverTheHillAdventures  Před 3 lety

      Hey Bill, thanks for your comment. Blue Dog RV put on the Blue Ox Track Pro. I can tell you my truck does not over heat nor do I have any sense of it stressing or over heating the transmission.
      Prior to my exhaust modification. I was lucky to get a solid 9 mpg pulling my 2020 Jayco Jayflight Baja Edition. Plus while puling that smaller trailer I did not have the airbags. The towing was terrible!!
      Today with my new 2021 Grand Design Imagine 2500RL on my first trip across the desert I was getting 11 to 13mpg. When I took the larger trailer over the Tehachapi Mountains the trip averaged a solid 9-10 mpg.
      When I pull the trailer, I make sure the water tank has only a few gallons in it and I don’t over load the trailer or the truck.
      So I took the truck to Blue Dog RV for the W/D hitch I put 45 lbs of air in each of the airbags. They installed the W/D hitch. The truck was level along with the trailer and travels great!!! What a difference!!!
      I have a little over 60,000 miles on my truck and was thinking about getting a new Chevy 3/4 ton. After you telling me about your gas mileage with the big truck I might just keep my half ton. Thanks again for the input Bill. You will love the 2500RL. We went to the RV show in Quartzsite and looked at some new trailers. Particularly the Grand Design Imagine 2970RES. Look at our new video. If your thinking about a new trailer with you big truck I would look at the that one. It’s about 9000lbs. Still happy with our decision and will be keeping it for a long time to come. Best Travels, Stan

    Hey Stan, I've been contemplating an air ride system for my truck and I've got two questions.
    1. Why did you choose to go with independent valves for each airbag, rather than a "T"?
    2. Do you know if the airbags would interfere with a swaybar system?
    By the way, like your trailer. Hope you guys are enjoying it.

    • @OverTheHillAdventures
      @OverTheHillAdventures  Před 3 lety +2

      The reason I went with independent valves in case I load my truck differently from side to side. I love the airbags it’s a game changer for me and the stabilization of my truck. It does not interfere with my Blue Ox TrackPro. Airbags are for the stabilization of the truck, sway bars for the stabilization of the trailer. Some may disagree but for me it’s a game changer. Thanks for the great questions and I hope this helps. Stan

      I have a 2018 F150 FX4 with tow package and added the air bags and E rated tires. I was towing our 2400BH TT with the E4 hitch. The E4 did okay but I would still have an uncomfortable amount of sway in strong cross winds so I recently upgraded the pro pride 3p hitch. The air bags are not needed with the 3P hitch but I do find the airbags helpful for non towing situations as when hauling heavy loads of dirt or gravel. The 3P hitch however made an incredible difference in how the trailer tows behind the truck. No sway or porpoising in heavy cross winds or tractor trailer bow wave suck/pull.

My tongue weight from factory said ~600#. Reality is its a little over 1k. per State scales when loaded. MPG's are about the same. Mine tows great. The air bags really help the up and down waves in the highway & train tracks .... You may have too much air in the bags. Mine are best at ~25#.

    A sag is an indication of too much trailer for the truck. Nobody tows a trailer empty so always go with the trailer GVWR with 15% tongue weight calculations.
    If you’ve added 6 volt battery’s, changed to 30 lbs propane bottles, eq hitch, that adds an extra 300 lbs to the tongue weight.
    Don’t estimate, get honest weights.

    • @OverTheHillAdventures
