It's a grower. After the 3rd listen, it gets very good. I think the live performance can give more to it
The fact that it is a male/female duet makes this really stand out, not just this year. Enjoyable and quality song, though without jury in the semi's it will need to collect the scraps left behind once most televotes are vacuum cleaned by Loreen, Alessandra, and Kaarija.

@@user-gs3yf7dv8r Let 3 is the other potential vacuum cleaner of that semi, I forgot to mention them. Alessandra is very popular, maybe not in every country, but northern countries like Sweden, Finland, Ireland and Latvia are in this semi and will vote big for her. There will be crumbs left for the other songs to compete for.
I am so incredibly proud we are sending such a high quality song again. To me this is just stunning. The story, their voices, it just works for me. I am convinced they will have amazing staging and really will bring the song to live. Thanks so much for this reaction video, it’s brilliant!

@@ESCTom look forward to that. It's interesting because there really isn't another song yet that's particularly similar to netherlands. I'm thinking Italy and Estonia perhaps most impacted.
I was okay with the song, but once Mia’s verse started, I knew it was really going to grow on me. Something about her voice elicits such a raw emotion from me.
I absolutely love this. I’ve always been all about the the lyrics (even in normal life out of Eurovision when I was a music talent scout) - I love the “I don’t know what I’m looking for, I guess a hero” lyric - I know I and others have been there (especially if you are looking to be “saved” or need something to have “meaning” in your life per se.).
This tells you you don’t need any of that or continue to chase after meaningless things - and ain’t that the truth!).
Duncan’s Arcade is my all time number 1 Eurovision song (jostling with “Euphoria” and “Fairytale” most days depending on my mood), so not a surprise I love this. I actually like this better that “De Diepte”.
This song is absolutely stunning and as a muso, is currently now my personal number 1 (due to the emotion that resonate with me). Will it win? No, however, If they get the staging right - OMG I believe it will push for a top 5 finish at least !
A fabulous song with a message that would resonate with people who have been “lost” within themselves. Those on Twitter saying it’s “boring” obviously don’t get the meaning of the song.
Netherlands does it again with substance, class and feeling
It feels like a feel song. You just can feel the emotion and the story they want to tell. Yeah it doesn’t have a really strong hook but i just love these kind of songs that are filled with emotion like that. One of my favourites this year. I actually like ballads more then dance bop’s so really happy about this❤.
I love our entry but I am not overwhelmed. Really hope they can bring it live and have good staging. Just hoping we survive the Semi Final.

Such an enjoyable watch.. you listening to it for the first time. 🥰 I really like our entry ...the first time I listened to it it went by really quick. I'm curious at what the staging will be...it can really lift the song to more of a crescendo. I noticed there are a few nods to former ESC artists...Duncan, Stien but also the Common Linnets (when the camera pans around the table and Dion becomes Mia. Toi toi Netherlands!
ive listened to it a few times now. the first chorus with Dion is really amazing. is it me or are the other choruses just not as impactful?
Definitely agree that it went by quickly, i didnt feel any drag.
The reception has been a bit lukewarm, i just wonder if its because its not a typical Eurofan song, or if its in trouble. its doing good on the scoreboard.
@@ESCTom I love Mia's verse as well....I lik the chorus as well, but I've seen the lukewarm reactions to it as well. It's a grower not a shower...but will it have enough of an impact on the night? Maybe we can't effort to not believe in god this time. 😅🙏

Nice to see that you're really happy with it: I'm not (yet). Gosh, I'm just not really feeling this song! Whereas "Arcade" and "De diepte" immediately touched something deep inside me, this fails to do that.
I'm happy that the Netherlands' niche is high quality music, and this definitely is quality. It's competent, solid, atmospheric. I like his voice especially. The theme of the title is that "burning daylight" means wasting the time that you have while "chasing highs" but ultimately being stuck in an unhappy cycle. It's relatable and well put together.
But... I'm not really moved the way I want it to move me. I like it, but I don't love it. So something of a dissatisfied Dutchie here, since it has been quite a while that I haven't loved our entry.
And I don't know what I was expecting really: I didn't know them, I listened to their earlier songs which I thought were good but haven't really stuck with me. The song is written by Duncan, and tbh it's probably my least favourite of any of his...
Staging wise, well we've seen what happened in 2014, yet somehow I'm not confident that this will be that good. It will stand out and I think it's likely to qualify, but how this will do in the final?

The first interesting thing I noticed was that (if im remembering correctly) there was a demo snippet of this available but the song title was Chasing Highs, thought that was interesting (seeing as its mentioned in the chorus).
The song is decent, the music video I quite like. Whilst i think this is quality, I cant for the life of me recall the melody (I only listened to it once but I think it needs effective staging).
I do like this,especially the music video but I think it could be even more effective live

I'm really picking up on a Taylor Swift-like quality to the song! And yes very in line with the recent Dutch sound in Eurovision (Birds, Arcade, De Diepte). Really enjoy the lyrics, melody, and vibe. I can see those who don't love subdued ballads not enjoying it but i think it will grow on some people.
Although it doesn't sound like 'A monster like me', it really does remind me of it because the duo sing the hell out of it and it builds and builds.
It definitely also made me think of Duncan Lawrence.
I reckon this will place really well at Eurovision because there's nothing else like it.
It's cool that it's made your top 10. For me it's currently ranking in my top 5, but only because the rest of the releases have been so underwhelming for me. I genuinely only really enjoy 3 or 4 songs out of all the releases so far, and for me I feel this year is weaker than last, but as long as I get 6 or 7 songs I really enjoy then I don't mind.
This could blow you away live, if staged well
Slightly underwhelmed by our entry. It's a good quality, solid pop song. I don't get a good feel of their chemistry from this video. I need to see them perform it live. Also I am not entirely sure why this is a duet. Their voices are nice together but there is no real reason why this needs to be sung by 2 people. If that makes sense. It makes it a little more dynamic so maybe that's why they added Mia. But lyrically there is no need for it because they basically sing from the same perspective. I don't know. Maybe I'm just overthinking. I like it. I don't love it. It will grow on me. I just need to sit with it for a while.
my main reflection on this afterwards is that i really love the first chorus with him but i dont really remember her parts as strongly. Yea I wonder would it be better solo, im not sure if they always work as a duet or something
@@ESCTom Well, from what I understand Duncan and Jordan were working with Dion and during the process they thought wouldn't it be cool to bring in Mia? And they all went yeah sure. And when she came in everything for them fell into place. I just watched a short 10 minute documentary on the avrotros youtube channel in English where they talk about it. So other than 'wouldn't it be cool' there really is no reason. Not sure how to feel about that.

I think the fact that Sweden is directly after The Netherlands in the semi's might hurt their chances to go through as maybe people are not going to remember them. I hope not though.

From the Dutchman on the isle of Ireland. It is not a bad song but I feel it is going to one of the forgotten entries. Compared to other songs it's high quality and good but it doesn't quite stand out. It all depends on the staging.

It just doesn‘t have that much of an impact for me. His voice is beautiful. Not that Mia‘s isn‘t but I like Dion‘s part much more.
Hopefully they transition this well onto the stage. Not sure if people will remember it between all the light shows and dance bangers.

I think Burning Daylight is a metaphor for how constantly smoking weed is ruining his/her life because he/she is wasting so much time doing it, I mean "Losing myself while chasing highs, I'm burning daylight". They're "burning" away the day, so to speak, wasting their time getting high instead of dealing with their issues head-on. That's my interpretation anyways, could ofc be something else, but since I've heard more and more people address this issue it was the first thing that came to my mind. Great video as always Tom :)

As a resident, I am duty-bound to be uber critical. 😉 The problem with this song is it attempts to tell a story, but trails off like a sophisticated coffee commercial.
Yeah, it's too short for that (not their fault but they need to stick with 3 min rule)

Latvia is not in that league, Latvia stands out and is memorable and one of best songs this year with very professional performers

This is nice. This is good. This is in the lower echelons of my top 10 but i really can't see this staying there, unless the next 14 song releases continues to disappoint me. 😢
I do prefer Mia's vocals to those of Dion. Wish she sang the first verse to optimise her prescence on the track.
Look, i could see this elevating in my opinions and the juries would eat this up but will they get a chance to boost this entry? It has to make the final first and that may not be a guarantee with a pure televote semifinal. I love a stirring ballad (Quedate Conmigo, In Your Eyes, L'Essenziale, Monsters Like Me to name but a few amongst my favourite ESC songs of all time) and this just doesn't reach this level for me.
In conclusion Tom, i do LIKE this song.......just not LOVE it.........just yet!
well i think im not too far off you now.i really love the first verse and chorus with Dion, his vocals in the chorus feel like Arcade a little (obviously not as good), but then i dont get the same thing as much later on. Second chorus is good but then third chorus doesnt work for me as a crescendo?
they need to stage the shit out of this, cos a big hitter is getting eliminated from deathtrap SF1 and it could be them. theyre doing well on the scoreboard now tho

A bit too middle of the ground. Not sure it will qualify because it's more jury bait but there's no great vocal moments at the end and I feel like Mia and Dion have their potential wasted a bit. It's also in a DANGEROUS semi final so i'm not sure!
I heard it twice and before click here, I heard it again and I forget what is about. I don't feel the strong hook I felt with S10, which I loved and place top3, the whole season. I liked the voices and some of the instrumentation that I can recall but it's forgettable and that's a sin in ESC, we need something to recall, oh yeah, that "oh oh oh, ah ah ah", or that "cha cha cha". I hope they can sell them live like NL did in 2014, but the song was lovely from the start (the release itself). NL is not looking for the victory, that's sure.

Duncan did write this song, I believe and I do not think that is a bad thing...
I believe it was actually written by Mia, but produced (and will be staged) by Duncan and his boyfriend (producer) Jordan Garfield. They heard the song and came up with the idea to introduce Dion to Mia because their voices could work together so well.
It's solid current my number 10 will drop down I just think this semi is too strong and it will be eaten up unfortunately i can't see this qualifying

no risk, low energy, in english...I expected more. This could be a winner back in 2010 but mood has changed in Europe since corona virus, energy crisis and current political tention....we are looking for fun, party, good mood in Eurovision that can take us away from our "sad" reality

Een heel moeilijk lied met veel kwaliteit. Maar voor de meesten in Europa is het denk ik te mooi en tegelijk niet mogelijk om op te boxen tegen al dat onnozele gedoe van Oost Europa.
Not particularly impressed by this song so far, was hoping for something more memorable.
Very basic and predictable build, not the best of melodies in the chorus, and a kind of nothing climax.
Hope singing live, they can elevate the last 40 seconds or so into something much greater.
I loved S10 last year. She was always in my top 5. But I really don't like the Dutch entry this year. It's pretentious and boring and it feels inauthentic. I'm disappointed in the Netherlands.

I think the Dutch are getting it pretty easy from the fandom. Based on history if we (Ireland) sent something like this we would be torn to shreds by the fandom (Got killed by the fandom in 2018 despite having a song superior to this).

No its not. We just send a proper song. If it qualifies or not depends on people. Generally on Eurovision vote for weird songs that are not good songs. Its sad because its a songcontest not an epic weirdness contest
