It would seem easier to just print the run number for each edition: 1 then 2 etc, But traditionally, metal printing plates were used and it was difficult to change or add a different number to the metal plates. It was much easier to have all the numbers on the plates and then remove or rub off the lowest number. I hope that makes sense??
