What can I do with that old Microwave Oven Fan Motor #2

  • What can I do with that old Microwave Oven Fan Motor #2. I have had so many comments on my old "What can I do with that old Microwave Oven Fan Motor" video (where I make a version of a Joule Thief using the coil from the motor) that when I was tidying up my junk pile and found another fan motor I felt I had better do something else with it. So I show here that you could use it for a Desk Fan running directly off the household 240 volt AC supply. To do this properly you would need to box it in to make the mains power safe from inquisitive fingers.
    ***************************
    In response to a question I am adding this information
    If you flip the stator, so it sticks out the opposite side, the motor will spin in the opposite direction. This is an AC motor, AC = alternating current. So connecting the power wires either way will make it run. The one in this video is running on 240 volts in the UK. USB is DC (Direct current NOT AC) it is also just 5 volts, so you cannot run this fan from a USB port. Please be careful, if your knowledge of electricity is so limited, there is a good chance you are going to electrocute yourself. In the UK that means you will probably kill yourself. The proper name for this motor is a 'shaded-pole motor' and here is a Wikipedia article explaining it's features en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaded-...

      That depends what you want to use it for. The coil has a centre tap. You could measure with a meter to see what resistance the coils are on each side. On my motor the outer tags were the ones the original power wires were connected to. Here is a video where I made use of the centre tap czcams.com/video/7c-AsRsyq34/video.html

I suppose it is an example of repurposing it, but if I intended to make use of it as a fan, I would have made a new box to put it in. In the previous video (that you commented on), I had complaints from people who said I shouldn't have taken the motor apart, and I should have made use of the fan, so here we are.

      There is no difference between the power connection in the original microwave oven and the way I have connected it. It is an AC motor designed to work on AC power. The big difference is it is not safely sitting inside the microwave housing so this is potentially dangerous as there is nothing to stop you touching the live terminals as I clearly explain in the video.

      Yes, you understand the audience level I am aiming at. Very rare that I do anything with high current or voltage. When I do take things apart with the intention of repurposing them I don't think making a fan from a fan is really a change of purpose. Yes it would be useful but I would not really consider it "repurposing" as it is still doing it's original job. Using it for a hovercraft might be more closer to the content I aim for but an AC motor does not really lend itself to that purpose so my original video on the subject was in line with my channel. First I would say that if you have any concerns you should talk to a qualified electrician rather than trust a CZcams video. You try this at your own risk, I accept no liability. There is no guarantee your fan is identical to the one in this video. Regards the polarity, the one in the video is an AC fan so polarity is irrelevant. If you have taken it out of a microwave you should be able to trace the wiring and see how it was connected originally. I was able to follow the wires from wall plug and trace the route through to the fan to confirm how it was connected.

You could buy a degreasing spray, or just use hot water and washing up liquid and probably an old toothbrush with a bit of gentle encouragement. Obviously you would need to ensure it was properly dried out before connecting any power to it. You would probably need to oil the bearings before use as degreasing would have removed any lubricant.

    I have a question that might be a bit stupid but i don't know much about these things : can this motor fail ? (I have a feeling that there there are only fix simple metal part so it cannot fail, am i wrong ?) the fan of my microwave (which is exactly this one) doesn't work anymore (but the oven does) should i just change it ?

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  Před rokem +1

      It would be very unlikely that the fan motor would fail, there really isn't much stress put on them. I would expect there to be another problem. As I remember it, it is running off the mains supply, maybe via a micro switch that checks the door is closed. There may be more switches involved. You would need to find a circuit diagram or be very careful tracing the wiring. Even with the power disconnected there could be enough power in the big capacitor to do you some damage. A quick look at eBay tells me the fans are available, so you could replace it, but without checking the rest of the wiring you might be wasting your money if the fault is elsewhere. As you can see in my video, I was able to connect the fan direct to the mains supply so I was able to confirm it was working. If you have no electrical experience, I strongly suggest you leave this to a qualified electrician.

      @@GrandadIsAnOldMan Lol, thanks a lot for the detailed answer. I know I shouldn't but i have been very careful (I was sober). I connected the fan to the main supply as you did and nothing happenned. Also I switched the oven on in order to test the power supply of the fan and it does deliver the expected 220v. So i believe the engine is dead (just ordered one on aliexpress), it's just that I don't understand what part of this engine could be "broken". Anyway I'll let you know if the engine swap did the trick !

      I am in the UK, the machine I took this out of would have been rated for 240v AC because that is what our AC is.
