Stumbling onto the parapug origin story after binging your channel for a couple weeks was a pleasant surprise. Congrats on 100k subs btw
Mike Stoklasa wishes he had such advanced ghost hunting tools at his disposal
no need. He has a Rich Evans.
Rich: Processing... Processing...
OH MY GODDDDDDDD!!!
The ghost of the Kurlen Neskar haunts this video as well, it seems.
@@chocoman45 Rich never really survived his encounter with the Showbiz Pizza Bear...
@@hamsters7760 i hear he's going to star in the upcoming blockbuster Ghost Cop
Oh god I immediately became emotionally invested in the pugbot the moment he said he was cold.
HE'S WEARING A BLANKET
Right!? Paranormal Pug is amazing :D
PROCESSING!...I didn't notice that detail...
...thank you...
I don't think I am alone in saying Paranormal Pug is a riveting story, and I want to see more. Give RoboDogo a Blanket!
Such a good bit character. Needs to continue be Recurring Guest Star so he can get an Emmy!
This year in Grim's -Diaries- it's been the *Year Of The Recurring Guest Character Directly And(Or) Tangential To Game Covered In Video*
I remember playing this game with my sister when it first came out. This is THE game that taught me how effective sound in video games could be. Early on, there's a phonograph, and the only thing it plays is a baby crying with its parents laughing in the background. 26 years later and that moment still sticks in my mind.
THREE MAJOR TIPS:
1. *The US patch lets you to remap controls to wasd + mouse,* or whatever you want, in the menu. There's also fan-made downloadable config files in the Steam and GoG forums for modern controls, high resolution and improved texture filtering via DOSBox.
2. You jump twice as far when you're running. It makes the platforming stupidly easy; and looking down can help you see the exact edge of the platforms too if running isn't easy enough.
3. Press Ctrl (default) to fire your weapon at any time, even when there's no enemy/object detected with the cursor. You can use this to manually reload the pistol (at the expense of wasting whatever rounds are left in the mag at the time).
Parapug saying he's cold and then the next time we see him he's wrapped up in a little blanket is the single most wholesome thing on the internet.
I hope Para-Pug continues to be a recurring bit. So damn good.
I also love the Chad skits. So hilarious lmao
@@visassess8607 The entire Meta-characters racking up from games covered bit has just been superb, so fucking funny.
Grimbo sold Parapug stickers, so I can't imagine he going anywhere.. even if he's cold and blows up randomly.
@@audiosurfarchive Grimbo sold Para-Pug stickers?? Are they still available??
@@dantekicksdemonass Not sure. It was on Patreon and Bandcamp(?) for a while.

A year and a half later and Parapug still makes me laugh like an idiot.
I don't think I would have ever known this game existed if my father hadn't randomly dropped on me that he played Adam in the game. Kinda a shock but now I'm going down the rabbit hole. Good video!
Woah!
I've been working on an article about the game and have a few questions about David. Could I contact you via e-mail or social media? If you give me your social media handle then I could contact you there.
There's also a Discord about the game. We would love to see you there!
I love this channel so much. The humor, the style/format of the reviews, the music. So happy I stumbled onto this last year.
I know, the first introduction in ring that bell, it might be full of bats…Woooo 😂 I feel it’s probably the most my brain would come up for that dumb stuff so it made me giggle.
Rewatching this. Love the début of parapug lol
The Ambition of Realms of the haunting reminded me a lot of Azraels Tear. It's a 96 Dos 3d adventure of which the developer even released 200+ pages of game design documentation. Thought it might be right up your alley since there isn't even a one review on youtube yet
Oh yes! Azrael Tear... Such a beautiful game, I would even say that it aged well, a little bit like the first MDK.
"I don't know enough about boomer shooters'
One of my personal desires is to see if yours and Civvie11's universes can even make crossover. He covered (at least one) point and click game, and there is a shooter elements occasionally in yours, so... one can dream.
i dont think civvies ever had any kind of crossover, has he?
@@Hemostat I don't remember any prominent ones but I have a sense there was a line or two from Mandalore somewhere
It would be cool if Grimbeard could get to him about the "director's cut" version and they make a crossover about dark goth boomer shooters(of which there are many, it's kinda a staple of the genre to have lovecraftian/eldritch tones when they don't have cyberpunk, or even along with it).
I misremembered that he had already covered it, but it was actually Ross' Game Dungeon (another "show" about old games I follow)
@@enriquejoseantequerasanche6180 I'd love to see that, for sure!
@@Hemostat Civvie has had mandalore and Ross Scott once or twice. Some others but I don't remember off the top of my head.
Finally I found Para-Pug's origin. One of the best characters in the GBCU
Man If I had played this when I was young, I would have been blown away. What an interesting game, thank you for bringing it to light.
It terrified me so count your blessings lol. Was fantastic!
If the controls seem daunting, SuperGreatFriend did a complete LP of it, and he did a great job. He even reads the the lore dumps in separate videos so you can skip them if you want. He used a DualShock 4 controller for the control scheme, and it apparently really worked for him. Highly recommend.
Thanks for the vid, Grim.
I always skipped the lore part the first time I played it. I was like 12 and only wanted to shoot demons but once I really did pay attention to it I was fascinated
The US patch allows rebinding of controls for WASD and (pseudo) mouselook. There's also guides on the GOG and Steam forums to improve the resolution, texture filtering, etc. I still haven't been able to figure out how to get 16:9 widescreen and I'm not sure that's even possible... but bottom line is that patching it removes the biggest negative/obstacle of weird controls.
Man I love this channel
I got this game like 10 or 11 years ago on gog and absolutely loved it. It took me almost a whole day to customize the controls (with external tools) to make them bearable, but it was worth it. I love such ambitious efforts from the 90's. That era of CDs, FMVs, early 3d and experimentation will always have a special place in my heart.
This was the golden age of gaming, and ROTH was one of the last, greatest and most ambitious examples of the early FPS and FMV/Adventure genre. Also one of the very, very few to combine the genres. Now it seems all we get from the big studios these days are the latest Halo or COD clones, pay-to-win lootboxes, season passes, DLC and other cancerous trash (most of which also suffers from terminal consolitis). I miss the good old days of the late '80s to mid 2000s; before gaming became mainstream and thus dominated by corporate greed and the philosophy of graphics over substance.

F*ck yeah! Grim is goin after my #2 game! Scared the hell out of me as a kid back then. I've been looking forward to this vid ever since I first saw this channel and saw the game on the spreadsheet. Thank you so much!
What spreadsheet? Can we add to it?
I thought you'd already reviewed this got super confused turns out I was thinking of Ross' game dungeon 😂
Dude same, I was watching this going, "I swear I've heard this before somewhere..." it was driving me crazy
@@DanielGarcia-hf5fe glad it wasn't just me 😂
Yup. and Ross just put out a new video too, so my wires were really crossed.
@@jamesburton4352 I just watched the new game dungeon it was pretty good
@@jamesburton4352 The real kicker for me is that Ross's new video is for Gothos, so I guess he and GB are just trading videos this year.
Ah, Realms of the Haunting. This is one of those games where Kikoskia's Let's Plays kept me marginally sane during my toughest of academic times - this and stuff like Lands of Lore, Anvil of Dawn, the Legend of Kyrandia series and more. I should really watch those again, to feel a bit cozy. Firstly, though, I'm going to enjoy this review.
A fellow Kikoskia fan. Nice meeting you here.
You guys ever make it out of the sixth grade? That stuff can be pretty hard.
I love your new transitions so much. I've always enjoyed your editing style and visual language, but you've really upped your game recently. Also: Pure Acid Hell makes me do the black metal grimace every time I hear it, I appreciate it.
I totally agree
This game is one of the most epic adventures ever told in any medium. The places this game takes you are so fantastic. I would gush more, but I don't wanna risk spoiling any would-be adventurer ;) Such an underrated game!
It takes you places, but mostly doesn't seem to do anything with those places. Instead you get that infuriation 'hall of mirrors'
I found it enjoyable, certainly epic in scope and certainly underrated. Don't get me wrong, I love it and replay it every few years around Halloween. Definitely a classic. With that gushing out of the way however, the best parts were the first 2/3rds where you're basically playing "occult detective" exploring the creepy old house, church, cottage, etc; and gameplay is finding clues, reading documents and solving puzzles with some combat in between. The atmosphere and art direct are excellent and the amount of pure detail crammed into everything is great.
It goes downhill in the last 1/3rd or so when it transitions from eerie haunted mansion and other real-world locations and occult horror themes to these bright, sunny, abstract fantasy worlds full of bland mazes and ridiculous "1990s adventure game logic". The infamous brain hunt in Sheol, hedge maze in Raquia, and the sword puzzle for some particularly godawful examples. Or in a nutshell, Grim's review makes exactly the same points and criticisms, and he's right. Still it's a damn shame we never got a sequel. ROTH got very high ratings and sold well, but the studio got screwed/dissolved in a bunch of mergers and corporate fuckery which killed off the in-production sequel they were working on.
I'd settle for a remaster. Paging @Nightdive!
@@J.DeLaPoerI hope director/editor Alan Coltman is still clearly *feeling* the 90's when he works on the remake and/or sequel.
Remember.
Always take the left fish door, not the right fish door.
It would save you from getting disintegrated by crazy doctor with pew pew laser gloves.
Like my dad always used to tell me
@@Smok3yR1der Left before right, you'll see out the night. Right before left, in twain you'll be cleft.
Yeah yeah we all read the Bible
its weird how if you choose the right fish door first youll actually find the cool sword that was on the games promotional material, and its like a functional weapon, but as soon as you leave you get mugged by belial so you can never use it. always thought it was weird of them to tease this sword and then just make it unobtainable. its dumb
@@darthjesus7959 It's not unobtainable though, you just can't get it _there_ (which is very early in the story). Keep playing and you get the sword a little past the halfway point, and you can use it the entire rest of the game.
Heck yeah, Realms of the Haunting! Thanks for putting up with its controls just to bring us this video. Much appreciated.
Is there a mod to change the controls?
Don't threaten me with a good time with the bat bell.
The origin story of an icon. He processes.
4am is the best time to smoke a bowl with the water spirits
Lovelovelove this game. I hoped that the resurgence of classic FPSs in the indie scene would bring us more games like Realms of the Haunting, as it was such a rarity to exist. But alas nobody is up to the challenge. Wanna play the 37th Quake clone from 2020?
You say that but Quake itself is an absolute masterpiece, none have come close to matching it IMO.
Yeah, indie devs are maybe reaching the point of oversaturation with the "boomer shooters" of late.
What we need is one really good hybrid game.
I agree. I mean it goes downhill in the last third or so with the bland, abstract fantasy worlds as Grim talks about here. But it's still a masterpiece and I can forgive the fantasy worlds and few bits of "90s adventure game logic" garbage for all the hours I had exploring the eerie old mansion playing occult detective. Unfortunately we'll likely never see a sequel; but I'd settle for a remake or even a good remaster at this point (paging Nightdive!)
This one was one of your funnier ones Grim!
Good point about the FMV format. I hope it reinvents itself in the coming decade!
Another banger. Great work grim!

Such good memories of this. Played it together with a bunch of friends and the story always stuck with me.
Not without it's flaws but very enjoyable
Don't just Plug Accursed Farms...
..Collab with Accursed Farms
..Please, I ship you and Ross.
That would be a lot of shouting. Accused farms is all about screaming a lot. The humour technique
Loving those Deus Ex sound effects when you’re assembling the robot dog lol
Dude, I just have to say that your music is awesome and one of my favorite things about your videos.
Oh. My. God. I've been waiting for this review for years, thank you!
yo thanks for featuring my steam review, that was pretty funny. i replied the game a bit more later and rewrote my review, its a fun game, but its a bit frustating specially the controls and the camera controls, but the rest i loved it and i dream of a remaster. btw love your vids
I was asking myself this week, "Has a Grim Beard viewer ever ended up in the reviews section?" Cheers to you and your contribution... to content! 🥂
Great video Grim! This is why I enjoy watching your stuff. You find these cool games I never knew existed and present your trials and tribulations with them with a dry humour that's enjoyable and sympathetic. Keep it up man!
Your videos never cease to amaze. I'm glad i've found your channel.
"It was meeee, I was the asshooooole" 11:11 I keep coming back to this review and it might just be for the one joke. BEST. JOKE.
God damn that intro track slaps
I was wondering whether Ross's Game Dungeon review would come up at some point. And it did.
Great review Grim and thank you for keeping Parapug warm.
YAAAAS!! So happy to see you reviewing this! One of the first games I owned on my old PC from 1997. Used to play this together with my brother. We hardly understood it back then, but still loved it! Thansk a lot man!!
Never thought hentai Vs evil would be mentioned twice in one day on my sub feed...
Thanks for covering another classic, Grim! Your angsty, existential musings are as charming as ever!
I cant believe Para Pug has been around for almost a year now, what a hell of an invention glad you saved that $300 on the adorable pug then some random bear.
great memories of playing this with my dad. and sometimes the period of up to 30 minutes getting the guts up to run into a room or down a dark hallway, scared out of our wits. we never did complete it. years later i bought it again and can now speedrun it in a couple of hours, no glitches, exploits, no maps (all in my memory) and 100% items. might be worth doing a gameplay vid of it. the brainmaze still makes me jump when one of those snarling sods sprints out of the shadows to feed on my face
Man such an easter egg find to stumble on parapug's origin story lol
You've outdone yourself on this on Grim.
I remember seeing screenshots and ads for this game in PC Gamer magazine and thinking it looked cool but could never find it in stores.
I noticed they talk about soul stones and Satan, this game came out couple of months before Diablo 1... wonder if someone from Gremlin saw the blizzard stand at E3?
Also, Zork: Grand Inquisitor
What a great day. Been wanting a GrimBeard take on this game for forever 😃
This channel is so underrated. This is some top notch content my guy. I love it.
Grim, you continue to make me chuckle and I'm totally going to try out this weird title I never heard of until this.
Did you really use the LAM sound from Deus Ex has a HAMMER SOUND? Outlandish!
i'm cold and also glad you're reviewing this game. Ross did it justice a few years ago, but you're truly the guy for the job.
The lighting matching with the cg backgrounds are mad good wtf!
What, a new Grimbeard video? Well that has made my day.
I love Realms of the Haunting! It's got such a unique vibe! And nobody ever seems to mention it! Very cool to see that you covered it!
Was under a lot of stress today and this was a nice way to wind down. Happy Halloween, my man!
I liked the robot dog, great review as always. :)
I've read both The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail and the novelisation of The Keep, I think this best qualifies me to walk the Para Pug.
On tuesdays.
About half past three.
Hi! I finally catched up, I was watching your whole lot of PC games, and it was so much fun! And what could be better to finish with one of my favourite games of all time!
I fell in love with RotH when it came out, even though my PC could only run it on the lowest settings. It was the first time I remember that I really enjoyed FMV in a game, just because it didn't feel cheap. And I was genuinely scared when playing it, especially the robot hybrids in the beginning were so creepy, or the tower with it's weird soundscape.
Now I'm older and still play it from time to time. So let me thank you to bring it back to people's minds, this definitely deserves to be not forgotten!
I'm glad there is a channel that focuses on classic PC titles, I'm looking forward to your next videos! Thank you for this!
I hope the dog makes it to the next episode. Also reselve "cold" plotline.
Great video!

Im so happy when I see that your new vid is out!!!
Haha, I like that you uploaded a 4k video covering a low-res game like this :D
Been dying for you to review this one of a kind game.
Yeah bois!
"Director/Editor Alan Coltman, who was clearly *feeling* the 90's." Lol. Once in awhile, Grimbeard has a perfect line.
Thank you so much Grimbeard for doing the lord's work of letting people know how excellent FMV games are
Parapug, the lovable new Hades of the grimbeard pantheon
I just wanna say that I love your videos a lot and I'm probably not your targetted demographic, I'm a dude that really only plays JRPGs and some niche ass ones too but I really enjoy hearing you talk about these games and I get interested in playing some of them, I think the only game I've played that you've reviewed is Vampire the Masquerade and that game is a 10/10 imo. Anyways another great video thanks Grim Beard
Some people will never understand the joy of how fun it is crack up at your own jokes, better yet if their really dumb, sometimes like at 2:17 to 2:27 ^_^. I resonated with you deeply there Grim my dude.
wow the left side of the desk very interesting
also vv glad you went into the behind the scenes videos.
that sound designer.....still fantasizing about him
I think the reason stuff like Realms, Tex Murphy and Wing Commander 3 work so much better than most FMV games is because they use FMV cutscenes in basically the same way that modern games use Cutscenes today. They aren't trying to make the whole game FMV and they aren't just sprinkling it in just to have it. It uses it's cutscenes purposefully and it really holds up.
Glad i finally found the ghost dog summoning video
Love your channel!
Back in 1997 when I bought this game and played it, I thought it was one of the most original and interesting games I've ever played. Technically I mean, it was combining adventure games with first person games I had played ,with somekind of awesome haunted house multiverse story which I thought was batshit crazy. I was pretty sure then, that _no one_ can ever tell what tf this game is about. But here you are, and it only took a bit over one hour. That is why you are now one of my favourite CZcamsrs.
Just wishlisted it on Steam, thanks for putting it on my radar! Excited for Spooky November and Spooky December
Wtf youtube didn't notify me... I just felt it was time to check for a new Grim release. Gg youtube
I played this game couple years ago and enjoyed most of it. I was actually kinda happy to return to a control scheme where you can switch between mouselook and point and click like System Shock.
was having such a not great day until i saw this, thank you king
