My DiResta GIANT Razors… Now LIVE HERE: imakeny.com/products/diresta-...
In this project video I made a fancy leather wallet at the suggestion of a friend. To be honest, I was intimidated by the design and the wallet’s construction, but did it anyway for the lessons I learned, which hopefully you will as well. For this wallet making project I used the Weaver 303 walking foot sewing machine. Of course, I need to make it a few more times to get the confidence in the skills necessary, but I learned a lot. A big thank you to Weaver - Enjoy! - Zábava
Hey all - Just a quick update to let you know that My Giant DiResta Razors are Now Live Here: imakeny.com/products/diresta-razor-blade
Guys thank you for watching I just wanted to let everybody know from time to time I do a voiceover because I feel there’s a lot of need to explain certain things that you were watching here. but in general most of my silent videos have a voice over over on Patreon just wanted to let everybody know.. because when I do one of these many people say how come I don’t do it more often, but in fact they do them for every video but they’re mostly posted to Patreon thank you for the love and support!
Thank you for sharing!
I like voiceovers personally.
i sure do like to hear the little stories behind the creation. it's a lovely wallet and a great video, good sir.
;)
Hi Jimmy, Nice Video, Nice Project! I noticed the Teaser "Making Fun" Sweat Shirt.👍
Of all the things I appreciate from your work I think I appreciate the honesty most. To hear a master jack of everything talk about his worries and mistakes makes this old chunk of coal feel better about attempting new practices.
Your "going to school" videos are the best. I know a lot of people love it when makers leave their mistakes in their videos, but I think it's far more instructive to hear how much a task or project intimidates or teaches you along the way. And the end result was fantastic.
Hearing you voice your concerns about diving into a new(er) craft makes me feel so much better about myself. Thank you!
It blows me away to hear you say you think you can't do something... you did great! Your friend was right to tell you you can. I think that a lesson worth teaching. Well done!
Its pretty tough not to get marks unless you're using a triple feed machine where the needle pulls the material along. That allows you to use smooth feet on top and bottom and still get a uniform stitch. Weaver sells the Adler 267 walking foot triple feed machine, and the Weaver 205 cylinder arm machine is also triple feed. Hi Jimmy!
The imperfections in the wallet are what makes it great. A true hand made wallet! I would love to get one made myself.
"Stall tactics." Love that.
I love how conversational you are in your voiceovers, Jimmy! I always feel like I'm listening to your podcast, haha.
Jimmy, I hope you realize how much enjoyment your voice overs bring. Thanks 👍 😊
Fabulous, such a cheer up to see doing over coming reservations. My grand mother was highly skilled with an old Singer treadle, but alas I was born after she died, but I still have her Singer that she used to make fashion garments that my Mother wanted but could not afford. Sometimes I talk to her grave thanking her for all the things she made for my Mother. Thanks for sharing!
Great anecdote, thank you for sharing.
It’s always good to work outside your comfort zone, this is how we learn and grow. I love when you work with your hands and not a CNC, as it shows craftsmanship. Great job and vid.
Bwahahah... the man who is fearless around a band saw is afraid of a sewing machine.
I love it. And thank you, Jimmy, for encouraging people to overcome these obstacles.
I remenber the old wallet, I think it was the first leather work you have done. The new one is perfect in his imperfection as handycraft.
I am the king of "Stall Tactics" I did it several times yesterday doing something I have never done before. I also understand the " you need to do something four times" and it is the reason I have your print of " You Go To School On The First Few" hanging in my shop. Thanks for everything my friend.
For a first try, that is a really sweet wallet! Got my Weaver kit, thanks for the discount code, and after Gary and Fernando helped me make a sheath for my Slick , gonna make my own leather wallet! (not quite as fancy as yours though😀) Thanks for sharing!
Nicely done. Of all the leather pros I've watched, None have done this style of wallet. You're the first. Cheers!
Really enjoyed watching this with my friend.
The wallet looks perfect!
Enjoy
I love how you challenge yourself. You never stop learning.
Jimmy don't be so hard on yourself, you did a great job and the next one will be even better! 👍
Some leather you can’t avoid marks from the foot. But you can loosen the tension of the walking foot to help minimize the marks.
When you’re making stacked card slots you don’t need to make them all rectangles. The ones that are under the top surface have “ears” at the top that meet the edge to minimize the layers at the edges. Hope that makes sense. A quick image search will make that more clear. Keep at it!
If you get an older industrial machine they can have foot pressure adjustments that can avoid this mark. But yah with modern machines it's pretty tough sometimes. I have 3 machines and only my oldest(over 100 yrs old) has the component that allows setting foot tension.
@@DesTries could painters tape be placed on the leather so the foot walks on that, on the thick side, not through the stitching area of course
@@DesTries I have a modern Juki and Sailrite. They both have presser foot tension screws. Not sure where you’re getting that from.
@@WilliamTythas it might help. Some leather will have a hard time with tape, it can almost peel the finish. Even if you use smooth feet and also smooth feed dogs, sometimes the pressure from the feet required to hold the leather in place will mark it. Certain leathers are more prone to this which is why a lot of people prefer hand stitching. I like both options, machine especially on long run items like straps and belts or production runs. One off wallets are just as quick to hand stitch.
We constantly learning from the cradle to the grave, thank you Jimmy for sharing this beautiful Workpiece.
Ahhh, a Diresta leatherworking vid... some of my very favorites.... Whole lotta skiving goin' on, doo doo doo! I Excellent man! You did awesome! Maybe a slightly thinner leather would help, as well; I hate those foot marks too so I just punch and stitch. It's grueling, the hand-stitching, but very controllable. Love the end result!
PS: I remember *you* explaining skiving to *me* when I asked you what it was a few years ago; this was in the NYC shop, and you just skived that mother with the belt sander! Good stuff
Dom!!! thank you brother
@@jimmydiresta Haha! Good times
Jimmy I love you… and your two watches. It looks great, and it’ll only get better with age. The tracks from the walking foot are kind of cool. Always an inspiration.
It’s comforting seeing a guy like diresta use stall tactics, I have a tote bag sitting in the garage because I’m avoiding attaching the straps lol
This is the first Diresta video I have ever seen. I heard him be interviewed on The Modern Craftsman podcast. I am impressed to watch a great craftsman work while wearing a Submariner. I am in the market for one and I will certainly be wearing it in the shop. Nice video, thank you.
Love it. Can’t wait to see the Diresta wallet-hammer-knife hybrid.
Your “school” work is beautiful. Very nice craftsmanship.
🐼 Big Bear Hugs from a 68 yr old grandma in Kirby, Texas, USA 🐼 ❤️ 🎀 ❤️ 🎀 ❤️ 🎀
The tracks from the walking foot are beautiful!
That was a fun watch! Great work Jimmy!
When DiResta says 80% of the job is done, for me It's 2000% :-) Awesome wallet !
I didn't think Jimmy was scared of anything. 8-), the wallet looked great, but we are always our hardest critics.
Nice job! Love how humble you are.👍🏻
I always enjoy watching you tackle leatherwork, I'm generally observing how different you approach it versus myself who does it daily. You're methods are inspiring or different than I might do it, it's refreshing. Cheers!
There not faults, just witnesses marks to a beautifully hand crafted gift.
Hot tub time! Your leather videos inspired me to get a quarter hide from Weaver and make a leather wrap around book for a friend. I love these videos!
Excellent - cheers Jimmy.
Love your honesty.
Love your leather working videos Jimmy
Beautifully done! I might have a go at making one. You always inspire. Make On Brother!
Oh man the productive stalling 😂 very relatable. Sometimes it helps make better choices with the dangerous steps. Gotta let the strategy ferment.
This was very satisfying to watch. Thanks Jimmy
Great video. Thanks so much for talking about your feelings. You're a great role model. Mahalo!🙂🐒
Lovely job jimmy. Love your videos with constant talk over 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great job Jimmy 👍
At first I was like eh, leather, not really my thing, but I'm gonna watch, and man that was awesome, any Diresta vid with a voiceover is worth watching! Great insights!!
Fantastic to hear a master break down his challenges from time to time.
I like the walking foot marks....kinda looks like a tooled leather...nice! i want one!!!!
Good timing on this one. I haven't done any leather work in about 30 years but your videos inspired me to order up some leather and tools to make a custom Leatherman sheath, ordered last week and the stuff will be delivered in a few days. Thanks Jimmy
i like the tracks from the sewing foot. adds a cool texture
Can I say that it was so nice to hear you talk about how you weren't sure you'd be able to do something and doing some stall tactics. I feel that way with almost every project I attempt. If you were to ask me if Diresta could make literally anything I would have said of course... he's Diresta. But hearing you not know, really gave me confidence.
I was kind of relieved to hear that even DEIRESTA is nervous the first time he does it, lol.
Enjoyed your openness about you reticence about your abilities. Looks good
I am not surprised you made this beautiful wallet. I know, along with everyone else, that Jimmy Diresta can do ANYTHING. And does quite well. The next time I get intimidated with a project, I am going to remember back to this episode.
Looks good Jimmy!
Hi this gift will mean so much more to your friend as you made it for him!!! In my humble opinion the so called "high end" one's do not have the "Jimmy Diresta touches" in it, which make it so more special and one of a kind!!! Love your work and channel
great job Jimmy!
Nicely done!!
Those hotel keycards are so useful... Absolutely recommend keeping them if you can.
U r the best Jimmy, what a talented person u r!
Well done Jimmy! Just remember: "You won't know if you can do it unless you try". 😉😉👍👍
Very nice Jimmy. As a leather crafter, you make it look too easy. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful Jimmy 💯💯👍💪
Always a pleasure watching you go outside your comfort zone. You always make everything looks so easy so it’s nice to see you tackle something that’s not your bread and butter. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome work. I like hearing you say that you went to school on it and that you learned from it.
It encourages people, atleast me. The Voice over is very educational. Keep up the great work !
Jimmy. It's awesome.
I always enjoy your videos, Sir.
You were scared? Amazing, you jump into all kinds of projects. And do a great job at all of them.love the wallet.
I think It looks GREAT!
Thanks for posting - thumbs up!
Great work mr Diresta
Great job!
Looks outstanding
Looks great ! Pretty good for a first attempt.
I think the walking foot makrs look cool!
Nice work Jimmy!
Great looking wallet.
As i listen through an hear you doubt yourself with the amount of experience and skills you have managed to succeed in the years of your life. I knew before the end it was goin to be an excellent and awesome piece of work you have done just like everything else you have made/done Mr. Diresta. I love your channel an everything you do you are such a talented person.
I’d buy it in a heartbeat! Nice work as usual!
What a fantastic video!! I really enjoyed the voice over. And I think all
Your makes are high end Jimmy!! 👍🏻🔥👍🏻🔥
Pretty cool, thanks for sharing the learning process, always good to see how things come together.
You made it!!! 👍🏻
Beautiful!!!
Well done Jimmy. Can't wait to get on weaver leather and order done stuff. I've always wanted to work with leather. In addition to my woodworking.. and a little metal working here and here.
Thank you for taking us to school with you while you went to school.
Thank you for sharing your fears and skepticism. You always rise to challenges and it's inspiring to watch. Thanks for sharing your talents. God bless
Always good stuff. I forgot about the old one. I think I'm going to make a version of that one.
Love the honesty. Stall tactics I’m stalling myself on quite a few leather projects. This may have been enough to motivate me. Thanks brother 🙌
Love it brother! You are definitely an inspiration because you're not afraid to just try. You may think it's not perfect, but if you learn something it certainly isn't a failure. And remember: you are your biggest critic. I think the wallet looks fantastic. You should rightfully be proud!
Can't wait for the next one.
I love your videos Jimmy you’re so talented at making things, keep it up man you’re the best
Beautifully done! Сool project and great work.
Nice!
The wallet looks amazing 👍
I actually wondered if you were gonna mention the cutting mat, i make foam and cardboard props for tabletop games and i usually say my favorite tool is my cutting mat, its also got cutting angles every 15 degrees. Super helpful and cuts measuring time down by tons
Good work!
Great vid Jimmy, if you never stop making you never stop going to school!
I like your projects so much.you done your projects with very interesting ideas.
hey Jimm you did a good job!
It is incredible how he handles leather, good tips, excellent, thanks a greeting.
