I think you are on Barson St where all the flood water used to end up in a big puddle on the Ocean St intersection. It is part of what is called "Beach Flats" and is not a nice neighborhood. This was once a really nice homey safe town, but not so much now. It is still one of the safest cities in the south bay area, and even in California. That is not beach flats, but Beach Hill by the wharf. No restaurant is open after 9 in Santa Cruz, only fast food chains.
People in Santa Cruz probably don’t go out because they’re paying so much rent that they figure they should just stay home 😂 but agreed, I lived in Santa Cruz in college and nights were dead 💀 But then again people did avoid the boardwalk after hours. Blue Lagoon is fun though!
Do you prefer road trips over taking a plane? Wouldn’t it cost more to travel by car than plane including hotel and food? Have the gas prices come down? You should think about travelling to Edmonton, Alberta and enjoying the nice cold weather…lol

I dont live there anymore, but am from there. That area is near the beach, and main Boardwalk entertainment area, so, mostly daytime, spring/summer buisnesses, and cheap tourist (or dope fiend and hooker) hotels. You also have a small, mostly now gentrified, "barrio" about 2 blocks east of where you were walking, which, although not as dangerous as it once was, is still enough of a threat for locals to know better than to be casually strolling through that area at night...not super dangerous, but also not the wisest place to be hangin out for no reason, which, unless you live there, are going bowling, or seeking heroin/meth, ...there is none, lol. As far as the "darkness" people refer to...LOTS of drugs...LOTS of economic disparity, and LOTS of home grown, working class locals, who feel the city perpetually overlooks their interests, to court the desires of the wealthy, the tourists, and the college kids, and are living at the very edges of their resources, and sometimes, have a tendency to take it out on those they percieve as outsiders, for whatever reason. I know this first hand, having observed this aspect of the culture there for decades. Its also very economically limited, as far as job and career opportunities, particularly in the blue collar sectir, given there is no industry to speak of, outside of tourism, so, locals who dont leave right after highschool, end up waiting tables or sheetrocking for the rest of their lives, and still cant really pay rent (most expensive rent in the USA) without having at least two of said jobs...3 if you wanna eat as well, and 4 if you have kids...so...in spite of its beauty, it can actually be a prettt hellish place to try to squeeze out an existence, and the pretty views just make it even more of a mind fuck, in a way. There is also cool stuff....lol
Santa Cruz down town has always been little weird but it does seem a little more ominous than it used to be I was raised there and lived there for the first 25 years of my life.
Lol you sound scared bro! I’ve been all around Santa Cruz riding my bike at night as a teen. The only way you get yourself in a bad situation is putting yourself there. The only street I’d avoid walking on at night is ocean and the neighborhood at the ends of the street. Otherwise sc is very chill, even at night. I can tell where u r too and it is a safe space, just don’t walk under the bridge to the homeless encampments lol. Even then the homeless probably aren’t going to do anything but harass u for money at worst.
I was never told why, but, I was born there in 65 and my dad and brothers would cut RedWood Burrows and sell for extra money, I never went, too young, they said they seen creatures that😮were scary, we moved to Az.
I’d recommend doing some research into where you stay in new towns lol the reason it seemed so “sketchy” is because your walking through some of the worst neighborhood of Santa Cruz, I’ve personally seen several people killed in those streets you were walking just because they had the wrong color shirt on or simply for being white and walking around at night down there.
