The carbon and monoxide line wasn't about suicide. They were trying to paint a picture in the listener's mind of walking through the city with the car pollution in the air.
Yup. In the 70s you got “smog” reports with the weather reports due to the car exhaust. It was before cars switched to unleaded gasoline.
Actually they sing "carbonon-monoxide" just to make the syllables timing... lols 😆 gr8 jam.
Not just the carbon but also the monoxide!
@@bobwait3629 He's snorting straight coal! lol
Great 70s band that kept the family, well fed!
My favorite Hall & Oates classic! It's one of the greatest soft rock tunes ever!
My favourite too. Holds a lot of meaning for me. H & O at their best.
Mine too. I think it’s because they both are lead singers.
Yep mine too. ❤
It's more Philly Soul. They were a Philly style soul R&B band rather than rock.
@@donpietruk1517In my ears this song. Sounds like a Mix of Blue Eyed Soul & Rock.
He tries to pull himself together, finding one-night stands and all, but I really feel the sadness is in that final crescendo - each time the riff lifts another key it feels more optimistic, but when he then comes back with "She's Gone" you really hear how very deeply he's hurting. Genius.
These guys were a dominant force in the late 70s/early 80s.
One of the greatest duet recordings ever. Their voices blend together like magic, but they they each have a spotlight to shine in on this record thanks to the excellent mix .
This song will ALWAYS be a favorite!!
Lord girl, you made me laugh so hard coffee came out my damn nose when you said you knew why she's gone. I adore you two and
all the hard work you put into bringing some joy and light into this sometimes sad world. Y'all are greatly appreciated.
😂
I was in High school took an Auto mechanic class Best thing was the radio everyday listening to this song and others like it ! Seems like around 120 years ago.
This was such a huge hit back in the day. Got played on both the rock, pop and soul stations.
Please check out 'Sara Smile' also...another super smooth song by them!
That's a sit in the recliner with a drink song!
This is my favorite Hall and Oates song
You guys should check out some of the Live at Darryls House stuff. He invites various artists to come to his home and jam. He has every one from Smokey Robinson to Cheap Trick drop in. It's a cool inside look at the process of making music.
came down to the comments to say just that!!! GREAT STUFF
Oh those videos are AMAZING.
Yep. Daryl and the guest don't just sing H&O songs; they also sing other classics. One of my favorite episodes had CeeLo Green as the featured guest. The one with KT Tunstall was absolutely epic.
The Joe Walsh episode was one of the best. Joe is just so cool.
I love the Cee Lo / Daryl collaboration, it’s my favorite!
Hall & Oates, definitely one of my favorite groups. I love their harmonies & their lyrics.
One of my favorites is their song "Sara Smile"
Blue eyed soul, right there.
The highest selling R&B duo of all time.
they were, and still are fantastic musicians. when I was in high school all my black friends Hated white music, but they all LOVED Hall & Oates! Luv you guys.
Interesting. All my white friends hated black music, sometimes calling N-Word Noise. 40 yrs later, white Gen-Z kids live for hip hop.
Another great song from this legendary duo is "Do What You Want, Be What You Are". It doesn't get the attention it deserves.
Yes!!!
Great song.... and a great reaction. These two just can't miss. Hit after hit after hit. There were from Philly and and one time that sound was callled "Blue Eyed Soul" if I recall. Take care.....
That's right. They actually met at a party at Temple if i'm correct
These guys were from outside of Philly, so their age and influences around that area at the time really shaped them
into a couple great , soulful musicians.
This classic is 50 years now.
When I was a lad, more of my Black friends folks listened to H&O than my White influences. True definition of Blue Eyed Soul. One of the most talented bands ever. T-Bone G E and a variety of drummers. Including a drum machine for an album*. Just bada$$ all around.
Welcome to our old school where the greatest music of all genres was written and played. Gen X welcomes you to true music and talent
I was a teen in the 80's and Hall & Oates were in my all time top three favorites along with Dr. Hook and Air Supply! We had some great music back then!!!
Dr. Hook, lol. That's a blast from the past. There's a line in a song of his that had me cracking up ('When you're in love with a beautiful woman") that went like this "When you're in love with a beautiful woman....WATCH YOUR FRIENDS! (in the music video, he whips his head around as he says 'WATCH YOUR FRIENDS').
@@paullentz1972 I know it well ... both the song lyrics AND the video.
Dr. Hook is a very underrated band. Too bad Hall & Oates are suing each other over John Oates trying to sell his half of the publishing rights to their music. To be friends this long...and end up in court....too bad.@@Michelle_Crn
Hand Darryl a newspaper and have him sing it. It'll be a hit. On another note, Darryl had quite a long term relationship with a girl named Sara Allen. She collaborated with Hall and Oates for many years until she and Daryl broke up in 2001 but they still sporadically worked together. Their song "Sarah Smile" is about her. One of their very first alums, "Abandoned Luncheonette" (1975) made while they were still Philly based before moving to NYC has a song called "Las Vegas Turnaround". It's about a girlfriend named Sara that's a stewardess and I'm pretty sure is about her too.

Abandoned Luncheonette, my FAVORITE album of all time. 🎶❤️
Hall and Oates wrote some really good songs!
I saw these guys live in the early 70s. They were incredible live.
I saw these guys in the 70s 80s 90s and the Noughties and they were incredible live.
One of those songs you just fell in love with the first time you hear it. Great classic from '76. My year.
Awesome song!! Have always loved this!! 😊
I love this track…it’s so subtle yet so powerful at the same time. A timeless classic ❤
Follow up with Elvis -Kentucky Rain. Another song about a man’s desperation searching and wondering why his lady is gone. Studio version.
Some more blue eyed soul! Great tune! 😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This was an outstanding reaction!! 👍 Ya'll totally got the full weight of emotion expressed. Went through my own version of what he's talking about (still getting over it) and man, I wouldn't wish the pain on my worst enemy. 😔 Thank God for music like this & the artist's ability to connect with the listener. It makes one feel less alone in their pain & part of a greater community. Thank you guys! 💙🤝
H&O is the Jam!
This is from thier debut album "Abandoned Lunchette". Every song on that album were hits. I saw them live many times and thier live shows were awesome. Todd Rundgren produced this album. They were known for the "Philly sound". I still have a vinyl copy of this album. Fantastic sound.
Not their debut album, that was «whole oates» This was from the second album
What a tune...love hall and oates..top voices and harmonies..
She's gone. "I'm sure she is", lol.
My dad loved music with horns in it, so I grew up on Hall & Oates. Their harmony and Chicago Transit Authority shaped my weekends as we danced and played while doing chores or cooked. Glad people are finding them again!
No other R&B group did it better. ❤ Most in the genre say they were the cream at the top.
The Kings of “Blue Eyed Soul”!!
This was the first release and one of around 4 where John Oates shares lead vocals. He sang the first 2 verses.
My favorite Hall and Oates. Thanks for the reaction.
This song was ten years before Rich Girl.
THANK YOU BOTH!
Philly soul at it's finest
Thank You! Finally someone with musical knowledge who doesn't mischaracterize this as "soft rock."
This is just a wonderful song. I've loved since it first came out in the mid 70's. Excellent engineering ond production means it sounds great as well. Always puts a smile on my face when I hear it. That's all that really counts. 🙂
You young people make us oldies radio jocks smile. You are finally starting to get it.
Please do Me & Mrs Jones live...so good!!🎶🎵🎶 Y'all should check out performances from "Daryls House"! Many guests go to Daryls real house and perform their music & Hall & Oates' music...Ceelo Green doing I Cant Go For That with Daryl is my favorite😍💜🎶
Two of the like-iest people on CZcams.
Love you guys. Stay cool and sweet and passionate.
** Like-iest : Easily liked
Hall and Oates are the Real R&B artists at their best! Their songs should be played more frequently than any others as they GOT IT YEAH THE
“IT FACTOR”
So enjoyable and your facial expressions is like “where have they been all this time” ! Well I’m from the COF 1969 and H&O are still my favorite artists as they put everything together and into their work, very intoxicating soundtrack, to say the least! Play more so we can remember them!
Blue-eyed soul at its best!
I saw Hall and Oats in concert at the Hollywood Bowl in 2016. It was a magical night.
Another amazing band with excellent songs. ❤❤❤
Damn girl that smile is 🔥🔥
My favorite Hall & Oates song
Daryl was going/gone through a divorce and John was stood up by his date. But Daryl met Sara, Sara Smile, an they were together for almost 30 years
There is nothing as smooth as the Philly sound.
The interesting backstory to this song was Oates got stood up on by a hot date on New Year's Eve - he said later in an interview. That started this song.
Both were dealing romantic problems. Hall had just been divorced from his wife as well.
They have so many hits.
A classic hit! Great tune!
GREAT SONG YOU GUYS! 😊CLASSICCCC!
You're such a good Dad! I love it.
Ceelo Green Live at Daryls House ...song I cant go for that ...will blow you away
( SARA SMILE ) WAS A VERYYYYY PERSONAL SONG T AND TASHA, GREAT SONG AS THEY HAD MANY! 👍 😊TAKE GREAT CARE GUYS!
Great song. Groove locks in and never lets go.
He called the rich girl a b*tch and that's why she's gone may be the best comment I've ever heard. Literally laughed until I was coughing.
It's one of my favorites from Hall & Oates. This is a remastered version. I prefer the original, but it's still a great tune. In the 70s, most major cities were seriously polluted. The news would advise you of the smog level like it was a daily weather report. I think that carbon monoxide verse was just a recognition of those times, not some covert admission of suicidal thoughts.
Yes not the radio edit.
For future reference, Rich Girl is not written about a woman. Daryl wrote it about Sara's ex-boyfriend who showed up one night wanting Sara back. He was a spoiled rich kid. Somewhere along the way (I don't remember the specifics), it became Rich GIRL instead of boy/guy/whatever. There was a video on it by Professor of Rock.
Back in the day, this tune and a couple glasses of wine would send you straight to the suicide hotline. It's raw if you just split up. But he's right, "pretty bodies help dissolve the memories"...
I saw them in concert they are one of Philadelphias finest duos! ❤
It totally worth checking out Hall and Oats covering Me and Mrs Jones.
This is pure soul musick, love your channel just subscribed to your both, stay safe and well always.
You guys make me laugh so hard 😂!!!
.She was so cute in her reaction to this song, I had to play her part back several times!
Nice reaction to a great song 🎶… thanks 🙏
Those ending wails of "She's gone" resounded in me during the same period in my life. Brings tears to my eyes even now.
I've loved Hall and Oats since the 70's. Saw them in the mid-80's, sold out concert, and one of the best I've ever seen. They are amazing. ❤ Thank you for reviewing this favorite. John Oates wrote this song during his divorce.
Great reaction to the song. Very soulful song from the boys!
Sara smile
Great reaction! "Out of Touch" is my all-time favourite song of theirs, had a massive impact on me at a certain point in my life.
If you feel like listening to a whole concert I recommend their Dublin, Ireland concert.
Key lyric to me: "I'm as worn as the toothbrush hanging in the stand.... I can see love's taken a toll on me."
Something everyone can relate to each morning but no one ever talked about till then. A poet's eye. Great verse.
This is my favorite Hall & Oates song. Thank you.
Actual instruments and talent creating this sound and not computers 🙏🙏
As I recall, John Oates's classic composition followed up on the duo's first hit composed by Daryl Hall, "Sarah Smile." Whereas that song was a love ballad about Daryl's longtime romance with girlfriend, Sarah -- John's "She's Gone" was about a failed romance he was going through. This duo marked every song they did with their unmistakeable sound. But each one was either unique or else a kind of continuation of a previous hit song that was sooooooo good -- well, one good turn deserves another (i.e, "Say It Isn't So" and ""You're Out of Touch"). Every time a new Hall & Oates song came up, I knew it was going to be memorable. Man, I miss these guys.
Thanks, TNT, I sure do enjoy your channel!
One of their best!!! ;-)
Amen to that
My favorite H & O song. They both put out some great solo albums. Please react to Daryl's "I'm in a Philly Mood"!
I love hearing oats as the lead singer telling the story.. will halls voice coming in.. and then that SAX!
ok that was a good one on the Rich Girl reference. got a good laugh out of that one : ) I grew up in NYC and Philly in this era, they were great.
Love the reaction, and the song !!
SO JOHN WAS THE LEAD ON THIS BIG HIT T AND TASHA😊, DARYL HAS THOSE HIGH RANGE POWER VOCALS KICKING IT UP OF COURSE! 👍
Great!! Thank you for reacting at the end. Thats what others got to do. Great channel Thank you!
That was a really fun reaction, especially Tasha (sorry Tee.).
Back when this was popular, EPA hadn't quite caught up with air pollution in urban areas. Air today in and around American cities is WAY, WAY cleaner than in the 1970s. Kind of a shame certain people won't acknowledge that, but I lived it. Sitting at a stoplight in a major city was a choke fest.
This song sounds like it’s a Mix of Blue Eyed Soul & Rock.
Great reaction to a great song. You two were cracking me up 😂
Definitely my favorite Hall and Oates song, the entire album Abandoned Luncheonette is awesome, you really should listen to the entire album; Tasha good one but Rich Girl came later
It just doesn't get any better than that.
Lovely reaction/s. You two have great personalities. You’d make fantastic next door neighbours. Keep ‘em coming. 🤗
