I'm from Spain..Thanks for the mention!!. We had our chance twice against such great great players. Kobe had to play really good to make USA win the gold medal (not to mention the travelling rules). To be honest though, that Spanish team was a beatiful coincidence of so many great players from differente ages. It is true that if americans can keep their physical advantage they will win most of the tournaments. I remember 2015 watching them in Bilbao (Spain). James Harden, or Anthony Davies were much bigger and stronger than players from Finland...Finland! They are Vikings OMG. As soon as we saw them next to each other we realized the gap was big. It makes sense that they dont want to play like a team. Very interesting as well the observation about individual mentality in America.
Also, the fact that Yugoslavia is no longer one country helped us during our golden decade or so.

One thing I would like is for the NBA to have International Breaks, like Football/Soccer, so that the best players can actually represent their countries more often and help them qualify for International Tournaments. Franz' response at the end is what American fans seem to not understand. The national pride and playing with heart for the country is baked into our European sports culture, which together with tactical advantages can make up for a ton of disadvantages in the talent level.
As somebody else once said (not sure who and where): For US players the Olympics are a bucket list, for most the rest of the international players it's the most important tournament in their careers.
At this point the US team mainly wins, because they can field an entire All NBA roster of players and win with a much larger talent pool, while the international players are divided between their own individual countries.

A lot of these players playing for European nations have played together since childhood, and thus have a deep institutional knowledge of the playstyle and playbook. The Finnish NT for instance has been able to win loads of teams that on paper have been massively better just by playing a very structured team oriented basketball. And I mean even more structured than the average european team. Wasn't really working in the WC because maybe the guys started to get a bit starstruck with Lauri Markkanen on the team, but the last decade the Finnish NT has been doing really well considering that the team's core has always been guys that play either in Finland or in second class European leagues, with one or two euroleague-level players.

I think the big difference, which nba commentators might not think about, is this: in europe basketball is usually organized in a stacked league system. like, lets say you have 9 leagues stacked onto each other and you could theoretically advance from the bottom to the top league. every scrub from a very young age, whos into a sport, will play as part of a club that plays in a league. so everyone is used to organized play, to coaching, to learning fundamentals in and with a group. like, i played organized basketball for 20 years and not because i was good, its just how you enjoy a sport. and i think this is the big difference in at least viewership of the game and why europeans like to comment on "fundamentals" like boxing out. (and the real reason nba players move differently on the court is of course that they are used to a different style of play and has nothing to do with skill or knowledge of basketball).

Great show as alway. I think team USA will almost always be a favorite (rightfully so) because of the pool of players it has available. Serbia for example only has 7.5 million people and there's almost no way it could bring as many superstars to the international competition as the Team USA. It's a blessing and a curse at the same time. Because we're lacking that much talent (at that level), we must rely on team play and fundamentals. Former Yugoslavia team would be a problem, similar to what that golden generation of Spain did for a decade. Also, there's just not enough money for top talents to stay and play in Europe. I believe when you play same type of basketball throughout the year, you end up playing recognizable style and makes it a bit easier for players when they gather for the national team to figure each other out. At least that was the case with Yugoslav national team in the late 80s with Kukoc, Petrovic, Divac Rađa and many others.
Lastly, international players play for pride and for their countrymen, and I could be wrong, but more than few USA players do it for prestige.
    Cheers

Honest question, what’s the benefit of ATO’s? Am I old or don’t teams have plays based off of where the ball is inbounded regardless of timeouts. Is it a designation if we need a good score to stop the bleeding or what am I missing

    • @dxfifa
      @dxfifa Před 4 měsíci

ATO plays can be run because the ball is always inbounded from the same spot with usually enough shot clock. Out of bounds plays are dependent on where the ball goes out and the shot clock is more variable. Also coaches can draw up plays or explain already known ones role by role with a timeout.
However it is possible to have sideline or baseline out of bounds plays sorted by area where the ball is out and the clock.
Another thing that must be clarified is there are inbound plays (where the goal is to get a shot completely scripted before the inbound) and inbound sets, where the goal is just to have motion to get the ball inbound to a certain player to initiate a half court set or even a regular play, rather than shoot off predetermined pass and movement from inbound

I wonder if the college system is perhaps holding the US back in some ways as the sport is becoming more popular in other countries.
I'm from the UK and football/soccer is the main sport I'm interested in and there's a similar thing happening in soccer. The US women's team dominated for decades and had the first women's professional soccer league in the world with a traditional US sports pipeline of high school soccer, leading to college soccer, leading to going pro. That led to the US being regularly being top 2 or 3 in the world. A lot of European clubs use a traditional European academy system so kids play age-level appropriate soccer until coaches feel they're ready to play at a senior level and they then start playing at that level whether they're 16 or 20 or whatever age rather than being held back because they've not left college yet. The US women's team have struggled in the last couple of tournaments and I think it may be because other countries are catching up and even overtaking the US.
The US men's soccer team have never really been at the very top of men's soccer because Europe has been playing using an academy development system for more than a century before the MLS was founded. The best ever US men's soccer players have typically come through a European club system rather than the high school then college route used in the US.
European basketball teams have their own academies and promote their kids once they feel they're ready, so the international players moving to the NBA already have a couple of years of playing against men and as touched on in the video will also have been playing alongside players for their country's youth teams and so will have that experience too.
This comment went far longer than I planned when I first started typing. Oops!

While Germany for example has only like 83 million or smaller countries like Slovenia have like 2 million. So just statistically the top 0,1% of 330 million is going to be a much larger and better pool of people than 0,1% of 2 million. Thats why in most international sports competitions USA is very dominant especially if its a team sport, not so much on individual ones like tennis.

    1. They focus on the fundamentals. Doesn't matter if you're 5-10 or 6-10, you must know how to pass, dribble, and shoot. Whereas in the US, your 5-10, your a guard, your 6-10 your a center, so the guard never learns how to rebound and the center never learns how to dribble, they confine them in boxes
    2. They have club teams instead of AAU, in Europe you can play pro as a teenager, playing with older and better people will elevate your game, but in the US they reclass 2/3 times so they play against younger kids which doesn't help development
    3. They take pride in playing for their country. Overseas NBA players want to represent their country in international competitions. And they've been playing internationally for years. Whereas in the US its different players for USA every year, no team chemistry there

We gotta retool AAU basketball. Those mixtape days of Brandon Jennings, John Wall, MPJ etc are over, and it’s not making the American play style any better

Other part, that FIBA rules allow you defense, in the NBA there is no D anymore. When it was some, tha USA team won.

I've been watching both NBA and FIBA basketball for over 2 decades. In my opinion FIBA coaches have been consistently better..US coaching seems too focused on star player management.

I hate recency bias because we literally watched Kevin Durant practically win the gold medal by himself in 2021…but somehow the world caught up because the best teams they could possibly assemble beat our C Team, which was mainly Anthony Edwards…😂ok

The other teams actually play like a team. Part of it is more reps but the other part is that it’s their mindset. Not to mention how the NBA players have learned the game is too simple. They don’t play smart enough. In that sense, the older American generation is right about how these younger guys don’t play the right way. Plus it’s not like the players we sent out were bad, these guys are up and comers if not all stars. We shouldn’t need to send the Justice League of LeBron, Steph, KD, etc.
USA is going to be like England and the World Cup. Don’t take FIBA and the Olympics for granted. You may find that you can’t win any more.

We cant ignore the fact that the US has a population of 300+ million and Slovenia 2million. A combined European squad has plenty of talent, arguably more than the US.

USA has won gold 16 times while Argentina with one gold being the only other current country to have ever won gold in the history of basketball in the Olympics .. rest of the world still has quite a bit of catching up to do lmao

Until the NBA sends its very best American players to tournaments and they are beaten, I don't think it is panic stations yet.
It just shows that the other nations have improved significantly to the extent that the US can't coast to wins anymore.
With the squad they are proposing to send in 2024 (seems like all the big players want to play), if the US doesn't dominate, then we can say the rest of the world has caught up.

Congratulations to Franz & Team Germany for the World Cup win from Australia, deserved champions, played solid team basketball.
Beat the Australian Boomers by 3 in the Group Stages. Boomers will be in the mix when we click - 2 wins against strong Team USA in 2019 & 2021 exhibition games.

Again very disrespectful to international players. In the NBA today the MVP candidates are all international players!
The closests US player is Edwards.
Difference is euro players for instance they play for the team and have much better fundamentals.
