“In a time when most haunted houses were single-file mazes of actors in monster masks scaring an audience of teenagers, the Blackout Experience emerged. Starting in a small Manhattan theater in 2009, Blackout made a name for itself by curating personal horrors for adults only and delivering disturbing realism.”

I will never understand this kind of thing. Violence and sexual assualt is not something to be simulated for fun. The kind of things that are being talked about being done here sound a lot like the kind of abuse that happens in certain circles. Humans need to look at their shadow side and heal themselves. Too much darkness is being viewed as entertainment- this stuff is opening doorways to lines being blurred between fantasy and reality. The people employed to do this disturbing stuff will also be affected on a psychological level. Plenty of horrific things happen in real life every day, without glorifying it as something "fun". I dont think some people realise that even if you have fun at this kind of place, what you experience buries deep into your psyche. There will be long term emotional and psychological effects. Great reporting on it guys, I just personally think these kind of places shouldn't be allowed. Im someone who is a previous fan of intense horror, everything we consume has an effect on us.

Sidenote: the way people speak of it as therapy. Reminds me of some aspects of bdsm, ive heard many people speak of it the same way. The safe environment, the ability to tap out at any time, and the sexual aspects in particular reminds me of CNC (consentual non-consent) & the way it can help some people deal with their history of sexual assault. Very interesting episode.

23:43 I was able to go through the Blackout experience during either the 2016 or 2017 Halloween season. I found it to be a great experience and made it all the way through by myself. The "tour" that I did actually had the woman who made you pull the tampon from between her legs and stick it in your mouth. It was a gross thought, but I knew that they wouldn't actually be making a person suck an actual used bloody tampon (which did just taste like juice by the way).. And there was also slight waterboarding. As soon as i started they threw a mesh black bag over my head and then dumped water on my head. It definitely freaked me out at first because it does make it somewhat difficult to breathe, but once you calm yourself down it really wasn't that bad. There was also a lot of actor nudity and at one point you have to stick your hand in the toilet full of supposed vomit in order to grab a key to unlock a chain that a naked female actor had attached to her ankle. And you had to do this while the naked male actor that was vomiting in the toilet is chasing and screaming at you. It definitely got my heart racing. I have been hooked on extreme haunts ever since my Blackout experience. Since blackout shut down, I tried to find another extreme haunt. I did end up doing a McKamey Manor tour last year, but the experience was nothing like Blackout. McKamey Manor was more of an endurance test rather than a scary experience.

What scares me the most is if the actors are forced into this. How do we know? Are they public with the names of the people in this, so that we can verify? Cause to me this feels like the perfect situation for someone messed up to get away with filming something really bad for some creepy people.

Someone has posted the McKamey Manor consent form and it's getting a LOT of backlash. It literally has things like "you may be given sedatives or hallucinogens in pill or hyperdermic form", "you may be buried under 12 feet of dirt", "we are not responsible if you get a transmissible disease" and "you may have teeth removed if you are sent to 'The Dentist'". Pulling nails out, puncturing your hands with nails, smashing limbs with tools, they literally put "MK ultra" on the list. It's insane and nothing anyone could legally agree to in a contract. Actual violent crime happening. You can find it easily by googling McKamey Manor consent form.

As a kinky human, who is a sub, I can see how these horror experiences can be therapeutic.
Trauma is very somatic. So going through a similar experience but you are the one in control, you are choosing to do it, and have the power to stop it if you need? That can be very healing for someone that has had things done without their consent. You may seem powerless but you have all the power, because as soon as you safeword - they listen to you and stop.
It is kind of like an adult version of play or dramatic play therapy.
Children who are developing in a holistic way, consistently process their life, feelings, and experiences through play/pretend play. So it makes sense that adults would enjoy, seek, and have positive experiences while pretend playing through these scenarios.
I am not saying it equates to children (keep Frued outta here plz) but it makes sense from a psychology and human development perspective. Especially because I have lived experience as a kinky queer autistic adhd submissive who has trauma and has sexual trauma - who has experienced healing through kinky play with ethical partners.

I was lost at sexual assault 👀 and that was within the first minute. I wonder if this is the one people are trying to get shut down because it's as if the torturers, are getting some kind of satisfaction out of it. Like it's more than just a scary attraction. You are literally being tortured by people who seem to enjoy it. Which doesn't sound great

I went to Blackout NYC in 2012 and was not disappointed. I wouldn't say it was fun and I didn't walk out of there without a scratch. I also knew what I was signing up for. I was "waterboarded". I might've cried a little. I might've thrown up a little after getting out of there. But, there was never a moment when I truly felt unsafe. The actors were very professional and they took consent seriously. If you want them to stop, they absolutely will stop without hesitation. That being said, I don't think I would do it again if given the chance.

  • @rhiality

To each their own, everyone is different and some things trigger people while other people it doesn't. The way they described their attraction sounds really quite toxic, it just sounds to me like they're trying to scar/traumatize people rather than just scare the hell out of them. I feel they take things too far, but I'm scared easily. I also imagine these people know what they're getting into before they actually do it. I feel some of the topics are a bit too far, such as rape and what not, but I imagine those people triggered by rape would have the common sense not to participate in an attraction like this. Although I think that consenting particpants would be diligent to know what they're signing up for, I think that some of these tactics could scar people who think they can handle it but end up not being able to, which is where you can run into issues.
