Sometimes I come to Ethan's channel just to remind myself that I need to have a good collection of references for everything and compare myself with artists I admire in a ✨healthy✨ way.. it's very simple, yet I often forget about it.
(this is from the perspective of a hobbyist artist)
i feel like a lot of people focus on “consistency” when it comes to style when in reality fluidity and range in of itself is a great skill. being able to experiment with different things constantly is how i came to discover my own style- or rather, comfort zone- and i find that’s the most fun part. confining myself to a single “style” only hindered my growth when i began to start drawing, because i had a preconceived notion of what art should look like. framing the drawings i make as different projects with set goals in mind to accomplish (mood, genre, etc) is a great way to bring some cohesiveness and thought into the drawings i make!
anyhow, this video is very insightful and i’ll be sure to apply what i learned from it
People who focus on consistency do it mainly to have signature + if you want to attract followers or do comics you need consistent style
@@behindzerosp i recognize that! i just think (especially for younger artists who are new to posting their art online or people earlier on in their artistic journey) that there is a lot of pressure to immediately establish a style. learning consistency certainly has its merits and it’s an important skill, but i feel like that’s a skill you establish later on rather than trying to pigeonhole yourself into it from the get-go. i forget who exactly said this, but there was an artist that aptly pointed out that it’s not a signature way of drawing, but a signature way of seeing (how you abstract things, etc). everyone has different needs for their art style + what they want their art to accomplish though

Damn Im coming back to this video in 2023 and its more relevant than ever with all these gems, especially with the advent of Ai and a saturated industry/community. Its not just about the objective skill or 'look' but about *story*, and *how* you tell the story. This video was really impressive to me personally. It perfectly captures your professional status. "This is why I was paid the big bucks" the way you're able to take the nebulous ideas and feelings and explain them and then turn them into an idea. This kind of thing used to take me days to put into "words" and then turn into a drawing. I might have just had a "lightbulb" moment watching this that'll speed up my whole process.
Honestly such an underrated channel.
Okay here goes nothing. I have been struggling with major depressive disorder for the last 7 years. It used to be easier to manage but once the pandemic hit my mental health tanked. I stopped drawing (except for the occasional sketch), and (for the most part) I stopped communicating with people. I havent been able to work the last year and at the moment I'm struggling to get out of bed in the morning and perform basic self care. I know that starting and finishing something like this is a long shot for me, but I want to give it a try. You've inspired me to start drawing and learning about art again. You have no idea how much that means to me. Thank you for reigniting a passion for something so dear to my heart.
