This is actually genius and it explains much more intuitively the idea behind “practice, practice, practice”. When you practice the same stuff over and over you NOTICE what you’re doing wrong and fix it. If you draw stuff you enjoy over and over you WILL see improvement in your 100th even if you drew the exact same painting 100 times.

lately, I've been really busy with school shit and never had the time to do arts. Going through the internet, I feel obligated to become better at art, which I was good at, I feel overwhelmed when I think that I have to learn a lot of shit again as if I'm going back from the start. I didn't realize the importance of having a comfort zone as everyone around me always says that having a comfort zone won't make you better. I realize that leaving my comfort zone doesn't make me any better as well. And so I forgot to have fun when making art and shit. Thank you, man, for the good ass video, this solidifies my conclusion that I won't be able to learn shit if I don't enjoy the shit I'm doing. all this time, art becomes a duty, a task I need to do in order to keep up with everyone else. This really inspired me to start and continue making art.

This is really, really important and fits so well with the next illustration I'm trying to do haha. I spend so much time being inspired by so many different people and want to be flexible. Some days I wanna work on backgrounds, comics, illustrations, different styles; it's challenging, but it's something I enjoy. But I had to accept, after many years of trying to grow as an artist, I was and still am a beginner. With my last drawing, I tried to do it in a certain style and I want(ed) to do my next one in a different way. This video helped me realize that it was actually the wrong way to go about it and it's better to keep practicing and honing what I previously did so that I can get better and faster at it. Most importantly, it feels way more fun because I know I've drawn successfully in that style before, so I don't have to think about it so hard.
Honestly, it makes me question versatility in artwork altogether and whether it's overrated and it's just better to get better at practicing your one single style

I think when you are just beginning in art you are pretty out of your comfort zone already but of course, you will naturally find things that you like to draw better than others or you seem to have a better grip on and at that point a comfort zone is already forming. I was about to comment that you should challenge yourself but then I remembered that I have been seriously practising art for several years now and looking back, I definitely unconsciously stayed within my comfort zone a lot when I first started out and I think that definitely gave me the confidence to actively start to improve later on through fx using references, watching tutorials and actually applying them, etc. All in all, this was a great video!

I like the videos where you review people's art at the end as well as give tutorials. At the end of the day though I enjoy both the only tutorial videos and videos like this. There are a lot of helpful pointers and tips that have helped me improve.

Great informative video as always Ethan, the goofiness is really appreciated when tackling topics like this...cause woof it can be quite difficult to take in everything you learn/read.
I have been reading “Framed Ink” by Marcos Mateu-Mestre today and he is talking about the exact same thing...but in a more abstract way.
Stuff about the comfort zone etc.
Anyway , it’s a must read for visual storytellers for a good reason.
Have a great day whoever read this.

Hi Ethan! I've wanted to thank you for your videos, especially this one. I'm probably not your target audience, since I'm just a hobby artist and doing art on the side for fun, while working another job. I've had times where I lost my joy in art and drawing because I've tried to force myself to draw lots of other stuff and not the things I've actually had fun at. Also I've always compared my others and was a bit obsessed with likes and the whole social media nonsense, but now I'm feeling more motivated because I'm just comparing my art to my own art and I'm trying to take it easy. So thank you very much for all of your hard work and the fun times your videos brought me. Have a nice day! :)

I’ve been told to always leave my comfort zone and I’ve found that in the 2 years I’ve been out of it, I haven’t improved as much or created as much as I did when I was in it. Sure my art has improved a ton when it comes to humans. But it’s only catching up 2 years later to my animal art and I’m so rusty over creating finished pieces.
Thank you for your advice!!! I’ll be putting it to use

3:07 WOOOOOW Damn dude, i needed to hear that so much! I feel dumb right now! The most common thing at least for me It's to get desperate and perfectionist with so much that i don't know and want to fix every single mistake, every session. Not knowing stuff and having to ignore things that i want to improve to focus in others and allowing myself to be bad sucks.
But now i'm learning this prioritization and the vulnerability that comes with it is crucial to grow fast. Trying to put every energy into every concept and dedicate loads is impossible cause you have limited energy, time and resources, and since you can't outsource your learning you need to leave some skills for future you to learn and try to learn others more important as fast as you can (Triage).

I had a question, do you have any tips on how to balance art and mental health? I know a lot of artists (including myself) struggle with keeping motivation and the will when going through a tough time mentally so I was wondering if you have any personal experience with this and how you got through that. I love your video's so much and they really have helped me grow as an artist so thank you

    • @dr.shiningpurple
      @dr.shiningpurple Pƙed 2 lety +2

I know I'm late and that you probably wanted Ethan to answer your question, but honestly, always put yourself and your well-being above everything else. Passions and hobbies, after all, are supposed to entertain you, please you, help you evolve and make time pass faster. You shouldn't feel like your passion is cutting off your time. If you don't feel motivated to keep moving, taking breaks helps. It's not illegal, I swear! Maybe your motivation will show up tomorrow. You just need some time, like everyone else on this planet.
And if it doesn't, it's not the end of the world. Perhaps it's just time to move on from drawing and find a different way of being happy. Or you just need some time alone. Whatever happens, stay loyal to yourself. Drawing can wait.
(hooo hooo, this is the cheesiest thing i have ever written. But its still true.)
