Perhaps the most remarkable thing about SE7EN is that very little violence is shown on screen. Really, only the death of the killer (normally, a triumphant moment, but in this movie nothing is triumphant). And in spite of never showing the murders being committed, it shows you just enough that it messes with you psychologically. That's what makes it one of the best serial killer procedurals of all time.

🍿 *HEY MURDER WHISTLE* Most people try to say this is a dark movie and that the bad guy wins. . . . But there is a deeper message right in front of us in this film. In the beginning and throughout the movie Somerset (Morgan Freeman) is very cynical and has pretty much given up on hope. But at the very end he says that "he'll be around", and that the world is still worth fighting for. This movie brings me much hope because in my life and career i've had to see a lot of really bad things. But I identify with Somerset. Although he has witnessed so many terrible things in this life, at the end he chooses hope and does not give up. That is a big statement. Thanks for all you, Blank, and the Co-pilots do 🙏

I was WAAY too young the first time I saw this movie and watched it a lot without realizing how incredible it was, it was on cable a lot back in the 90s believe it or not, but I mean I can watch it over and over again today and the result is the same, drained and still baffled at how this thing came to be. It's not an easy film to watch but my God is it worth that uncomfort to experience actual cinematic masterpieces.

A man in a trench coat with a limp holding an umbrella. He even moves closer to the window and he's just watching Mills and Somerset. Wild Bill is even remarking that the client who ordered the blade strap-on had a limp. He's there the entire scene just watching. Mills even turns a looks at him. It's John, they just don't know his face. He even turns away from the window and walks away as Mills and Somerset exit.

This is an incredible movie, and while I know Kevin Spacey is not the best human being on the planet he is a fantastic actor. For this role Kevin Spacey set aside a one of the Se7en deadly sins...Pride, to help this movie keep the mystery of who the killer was alive till the reveal. Kevin Spacey suggested that his name be kept off of all promotional materials for this movie. He was not listed on the movie poster, in the trailers, or in the opening credits. He suggested this because right before this he had just done The Usual Suspects, and he thought that everyone would figure out he was the killer instantly after seeing that Freeman and Pitt were the cops.

I was a teenager when this came out so I don't remember much about the promotions but it makes sense that they'd leave him out to save the surprise!

Fun fact- initially, Gwyneth Paltrow’s head was meant to be shown on screen. Therefore, a prop replica of her severed head was made.
However, Brad Pitt was adamant that Tracy’s head should remain off-camera, allowing audiences to picture the gruesome sight in their heads (a wise decision).
So, the replica of Paltrow’s head was lost to time, shoveled off to some warehouse. And that is where it stayed until Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Contagion’ found a use for it.
Paltrow’s character is one of the first victims of the deadly virus around which the movie is based.
Her character dies quite early into the proceedings, and we’re shown a rather gnarly autopsy sequence featuring,
    - no prizes for guessing - the replica of Gwyneth Paltrow’s head, initially created for ‘Se7en’.
What a journey for Paltrow’s severed head. Made for ‘Se7en’ and then discarded without use, it waited for 15 long years to traumatize all who would lay their eyes upon it.
After 15 long years of waiting, we finally got to see “What’s in the box.”
