The way joe pescis character went out had to be one of the most disturbing ways ive seen in any gangster film
For one his men betrayed him for probably to make right with the bosses. And two they made him watch as they beat his brother first. Torture him by making him watch and being the only men who could have done it.

Little bit of movie trivia for you. The Scene where two hitmen kill one of them outside in a parking lot are two actual ex hitmen for the mob. They were consulting on the movie, Scorsese preferred the authenticity in the way they showed how it was done so asked if they'd do it on film.
One of those hitmen is played by the real-life Frank Culotta, Nicky's best frined in the movie (played by Frank Vincent).

The actual casino where this took place was The Stardust which was on the north side of the strip. One of the newest casinos Resort’s World is where the Stardust was. They even have an old Stardust sign displayed inside Resort’s World
Lefty Rosenthal (DeNiro) and Allen Glick (Pollack) were actually running four casinos in Vegas. The Stardust is the one most closely aligned with the Tangiers but the other three were the Fremont (which is still around), the Marina (which is now the MGM Grand), and the Hacienda (which they blew up in 1996 to make way for Mandalay Bay)
Wise Guys was pretty much the true story of the mobster 'Henry Hill'. Casino was 'mostly' based on 'Frank ‘Lefty’ Rosenthal,' and 'most' of the events on the movie reflect real-life ones, like his wife’s death, him having a TV show (the Frank Rosenthal Show) and even the attempt on his life, with the real-life Frank surviving likely due to a unique manufacturing device to his car’s model, a 1981 Cadillac Eldorado, being a stout metal plate under the driver’s seat GM added on all cars of that model to correct a balancing problem. & One last thing for everybody, Al Capone was never in, the famous Vegas. - 'Black Book'.

Fun fact: The guy at 39:04 that shoots the guy in the head and called him a "jagoff" is the actual mobster that is being portrayed by Frank Vincent.
He claimed that one time he threatened Joe Pesci on set because Pesci called him a rat in front of other people and it really pissed him off.

The real life gangster Joe Pesci played was Tony "The Ant" Spilotro. He got the nickname from an FBI agent who was frustrated at never being able to pin anything on him, so just to annoy him whenever he talked about him to any reporter he would always refer to him as "that little pissant." The nickname stuck, but never to his face.
At 9:22 what kind of conversation is this: Nicky, having been sent by the Chicago bosses to protect Ace and the casino, is essentially telling these other mobsters "hey I don't mind you running a scam to make money, just don't run it here in this casino."
Nicky’s lawyer in this is Oscar Goodman, who plays himself! And he went on to be mayor of Las Vegas until recently, and now his wife is mayor of Vegas.
The male blackjack dealer when Nikki was off the rails is the same blackjack dealer from Vegas Vacation and Rain Man movie and was a real life dealer at Caesars

The conversation that Nicky has with the other two gangsters at 9:20 was coded. Nicky was telling them that he was the new enforcer at the Tangiers and that their shakedowns (Carmine) would no longer be welcome, though they could still go to other casinos and run their skim.
Talk about bodies in the desert , last year ( or was it the year before??) when the water level went down in Lake Mead they found bodies in there too!!

Makes one wonder how many bodies are in the American southwest. Between the outlaw days to the "heyday" of serial killers, the mob building Vegas and now to the many cartels that run much of the South West...

I saw Joe Pesci’s death scene in this movie when I was a teenager, and it still disturbs me. Maybe it’s the odd reaction to seeing such a tough guy, beaten so bad, then buried alive in whitey tighties after seeing his brother beaten the same way. Such a mix of emotions.
The man from "Rush Hour 2" was Alan King, a stand-up comedian from the Old School who became a fine actor.
Joe Pesci and Frank Vincent were life-long friends long before they hit Hollywood.

I can't explain it because I'm not a full on movie buff like many of your commenters. But man that montage of Nicky running wild in Vegas while "Can't you Hear Me Knockin?" playing is easily one of my favorite movie montage scenes in all of movie history. Even out of all the other kick ass montage type scenes Martin Scorsese is known for with equally amazing music and camera work? This one just hits different for some reason

I don't know if you've looked up the real people this is based off, but Joe Pesci's character in Goodfellas was actually 6 foot 4. But in Casino, Pesci's real character was about the same dimensions as Pesci; 5 foot 2:)

When Spilotro moved to Las Vegas the murder rate quadrupled
In real life, the car bomb went off in the parking lot of a Tony Romas on sahara that doesn't exist anymore, although it did during the making of this movie. In the movie, it happens in the parking lot of Main street casino, although it probably had a different name back then.
The hitman at the end of the movie in the first two hits is the REAL Frank Cullota. The one with the glasses. He was a real-life former member of the Chicago Outfit. An actual stone cold killer. So watching him "act" out those hits has to make you wonder if he was just being himself. A quick glimpse into real evil 😐

Counting cards IS actually illegal in Vegas guys! Hard to prove. But they reserve the right to ask you to leave if they suspect you’re doing it.
The perfect companion to this film would be Bugsy (1991). If you haven't already seen it, it's a must see. Bugsy tells the story of how the mafia got started in Las Vegas while Casino is the story of how the mafia was, for the most part, kicked out of Las Vegas. Bugsy also has a lot of the cultural references from the first Godfather movie linked to Las Vegas when the Corleones are trying to get the mafia started in gambling.
The whole disaster is Ace's fault. He let his infatuation with Jennifer cloud his normally-sound judgement - she even WARNED him. And then he let his ego take over when it came to the conflict with the county commissioner. There are HUNDREDS of jobs in a casino that don't have anything to do with the gambling business; he could have shuffled the idiot into any of them, or even made one up for him. Nicky was a problem, but if Ace hadn't let himself get so obsessed, he probably wouldn't have been as susceptible to guilt by association.
I think it was Scorsese that said one of the daily struggles in making this film was having Don Rickles keep his mouth shut for most of his scenes. He doesn't say much throughout the film, so of course there had to be a lot of takes since they couldn't use the shots where Don would start roasting Robert De Niro to make him laugh, which was just the nature of Don Rickles.
Fun fact: Don Rickles was actually once a guest on the Lefty Rosenthal Show
The airplane incident actually happened. It was actually a mechanical issue and not low fuel. Rabbit hole-ing the “true story” of this movie is super interesting

Bearing in mind how awful Ginger was in this film, Sharon Stone's performance earned her her one and only Oscar nomination, for Best Leading Actress. But Susan Sarandon won the Oscar in that year, for 'Dead Man Walking'.

I always consider this like the older sibling film to Goodfellas.
The lion at the end of the movie was indeed that entrance to MGM. I think it was changed when some cultures objected to walking onto the mouth of the lion.
You used to be able to get your picture taken next to a caged lion. Before the flash, someone would poke the lion with stick so it would open its mouth.
I actually had my picture taken with a baby lion when we stayed at the MGM one time years ago! They let me touch its back and the handler used squeaky toys to distract it and get it to face the camera.
This is true. I was there in 1995 right before they redesigned that entrance.
They say some of the Lake Meed bodies they have found in drums are down to Nicky
Highly recommend reading the book that the movie is based off of by Nick Pileggi "Casino: Love & Honor in Las Vegas". Goes into a lot more detail about the real people that these characters are based off of, a good read. 👍

To me Robert De Niro is the greatest actor of our time, 3 time Oscar winner.
Sharon Stone was absolutely extraordinary in this film, she won a Golden Globe for this role.
I love the fact that the legendary iconic Stand up comedian Don Rickles was in this classic film...he was such a National Treasure who career spanned nearly 70 years.
He was friends with Frank Sinatra...he was in all the classic comedian Roasts in the 1970's & 1980's.

FYI, the Deniro character was based on a man named "Lefty" Rosenthal. The reason he outlasted everyone and never went to the slammer is (it came out after he died) he was a long time FBI informant. Also there never was a "Tangiers" Hotel and Casino it was based on The Stardust. The man who played their lawyer was their lawyer in real life named Oscar Goodman who years later became a very successful Mayor of Las Vegas until he was term limited out and now his wife is the Mayor. Also What makes James Woods an "asshole in real life"? Why would you say such a thing? Please elaborate. I have a suspicion as to why you said that but please elaborate.

Well mom you would get De Niro and Pacino right if you watch Heat. They’re both in it so it would'nt matter who you said. A cool and kind of weird dark comedy by Martin Scorcese is After Hours. Ya'll should check it out.

Las Vegas black book still exists and you can funnily enough see who is excluded from casinos online right now.
As an Italian American I see a lot of Italian names on the list and I'm calling discrimination!! (Just kidding). But it makes me wonder how many mob guys are still screwing around in Vegas to this day lol.
But yeah if you want some fun while your bored give it a google. You can even find some of the older archived versions back when it was an actual book and contained plenty of legitimate mobsters and their associates
And CZcams has plenty of actual "Aces High" footage. The real "Lefty" Rosenthal's variety show.

For another epic, classic mobster movie you should watch “Once Upon a Time in America” (1984)
Directed by Sergio Leone, it also features Robert De Niro, James Woods and briefly, Joe Pesci. It really is one of the best!

Despite Goodfellas being one of my favorite movies of all time, I've always liked this one a smidge better because, unlike the characters in Goodfellas, whom you can't but help root for, you don't so with these characters. They are awful by comparison and you root for their downfall.
I actually like this even more than Goodfellas. Yes stylistically it's similar and you can almost say that Joe Pesci's character seems really the same character in both movies, however I feel that De Niro's character is more interesting and slightly more sympathetic than Ray Liotta's in Goodfellas. And the relationship with his wife, although disastrous, is more fleshed out here than in Goodfellas, and Sharon Stone was excellent in this movie. It also feels more grand and more "an epic" than Goodfellas IMO.
Don't get me wrong, I like Goodfellas a lot too, but if I had to choose between these two I'd choose Casino, and I feel that the only real criticism one can direct towards this movie is, like I said, that it's definitely stylistically very similar.
By the way, in Casino, Joe Pesci's character is based on the gangster Anthony Spilotro, who was physically VERY similar to Joe Pesci. Unlike the character he played in Goodfellas, who in real life was completely different and was a big tall guy.

Getting older is realizing Casino is better rewatch than Goodfellas. Both phenomenal but Casino gives you a little bit more to chew

This film is very flawed. They do things that were in many other movies. The film was way too violent. You watch the Departed, which is a perfect film; so much better than this. Scorcese always does a good job but a mob film like The Irishman is so much better. Taxi Driver will always be his best film.
