I think it is a good decision to focus on noise normalized results rather than OC results. The cooler is not as random as the OC can be. If it is a model specifically for OC though like an unlocked card like the Kingpin then of course it needs to be looked at.

One way to include some OC results, would be to only show the average or median OC of all the available cards as well as the best and worst (without naming them).
If using the median it would also mean that very poor or very good cards won't have an effect on the result. That would be interesting to compare with 3060's and 3070s (OC'ed as well) to get and estimate of the potential for overclocking. A minimum of 3-4 cards should likely be used before providing any OC results still.

While I agree you shouldn't look at the OC performance of a single card, it would still be interesting to see how well a certain graphics card (like the rx 6700xt) overclocks on average across all the models you have (Except for the reference design maybe).

I think a good compromise would be to show OC results on at least reference models to get an idea how much you can potentially squeeze out of graphics cards.

I currently have a rx580 with an i78700k, and a Asus Prime z370A mb, and a solid PS. Will have to get the specs on that. I only mentioned it, thinking of getting this card I assume I got to make sure there's enough room on the motherboard power supply will run it and the case is big enough....thanks for the review. I suspect this will be a good upgrade for my 8 gig video card. I mostly play Doom Eternal which is a phenomenal game. Compared to what you might ask? Why of course Duke Nukem from the 90s.

I have the asus tuf version of the card and I can't believe how quiet and cool it is, I think that the metal part of the cooler is identical. But I noticed that the tdp is just too low on my gpu on stock when going 100% gpu won't use more than 160w while running around 2500mhz, If I oc it to effective 2750+mhz (2850 in wattman) the tdp is still around 200-210w. Reported by the msi afterburner, amd overlay and hwinfo.

Steve, your comments about using noise normalized results instead of OC make perfect sense to me. I have a PNY GTX 1080 with an utter crap cooler but great GPU and memory silicon, and which can't keep them cool enough. It's like a 120-140W cooler on an 180W GPU. The silicon's happy enough to do over 2100 and the memory 12,000 which ofc clocks itself down to 2000 at 83°C under load. I prob should watercool it but instead I go 1923MHz @0.9V and 11,600 memory, using135W at about 70°C. Undervolt FTW with crap coolers.

I understand the reason not to test OC, but I still think that people are interested in how high a chip can get in general. So I think that you should test this and perhaps do a feature on that once in a while, instead of making it part of the review.

  • @christopherhadsell9049

you already can extrapolate this result with the temp chart and the freq. The noise normalized chart also gives you indications of which card is cooler just by blasting air.

I agree on not paying these ridiculously inflated prices. I planned on upgrading my system with a new GPU *but* as you're aware they're extremely hard to find. If you manage to find one sellers want 30, 40, 50, 60, 70% more than retail to purchase. No thank you. I wanted one to improve my fps not bankruptcy my checking account.
If cards return to being in stock and at a reasonable price then I'll buy. Not until even if my GPU fails.

How can one AIB card be more power efficient that the other when they use the same GPU? is it down to the voltage curve or VRM or something?

    • @gunnar6674
      @gunnar6674 Před 3 lety +1

Power stages, capacitors, fans and cooler design, I think. Also temperature and voltage curves are non-linear, so a better cooler and better capacitors might mean same performance with slightly less power draw. A better cooler also means less power drawn by the fans, which means more power headroom for the GPU.

Would love to see your OC findings. I'm yet to find the best stable OC setting on my Reference PowerColor 6700 XT - Seems the stock GPU overclock (2704MHz) may be the limit (with max fan speed settings), but there may be more room to move...

I like seeing the overclock findings too but he's right. I have the Rog Strix LC 6800 XT and mine overclocks to 2.75 ghz without crashing and Hardware Unboxed's sample reached the limit of 2.8. A person I was talking to with the same exact card as mine only went up to 2.515 ghz.

@@TheEthNick I hear you, I built my first PC early last year with a Nitro + 5700 XT but never really tinkered with it. Once I got the strix lc 6800 xt at Micro Center I was messing around with it since these cards have high clock potential. Highest mine goes 100% stable is 2.7ghz. I've stressed the hell out of it. 2.75 isn't always stable, anything above that crashes.
Did you see Der8auer's 6900XT LN2 Liquid Devil video? He broke the world record with a 3.2ghz. That's nuts but yeah it's just for fun at the end of the day. I mostly run my card with a 2.6ghz max/2.4ghz min OC and sometimes even go to automatic.
The differences aren't that significant but are there and like you say it is fun to tinker and tune your build. I have different profiles for different games. I like that about the Radeon Software.
